The global economic environment is a challenge that many of you around the world are no doubt experiencing. We’re seeing high global inflation rates, as well as adverse currency trends, impacting consumers and creating pressure on many industries. Based on these challenging economic conditions, SIE has made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price (RRP) of PlayStation 5 in select markets across Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), Asia-Pacific (APAC), Latin America (LATAM), as well as Canada. There will be no price increase in the United States.

The new RRPs below are effective immediately unless otherwise noted.*

Europe
  • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – €549.99
  • PS5 Digital Edition – €449.99
UK
  • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – £479.99
  • PS5 Digital Edition – £389.99
Japan (effective Sept. 15, 2022)
  • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – ¥54,980 yen
  • PS5 Digital Edition – ¥44,980 yen
China
  • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – ¥4,299 yuan
  • PS5 Digital Edition – ¥3,499 yuan
Australia
  • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – AUD $799.95
  • PS5 Digital Edition – AUD $649.95
Mexico
  • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – MXN $14,999
  • PS5 Digital Edition – MXN $12,499
Canada
  • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – CAD $649.99
  • PS5 Digital Edition – CAD $519.99

Guess they don't want to take that loss in profit margins; the fx rate was going to cause issues for Sony (MS clearly don't care so much about HW profit margins)

What was the price before in those markets?

I'm sure they will, Sony really are sticking it to their loyal customers this generation. Ridiculous first party game prices, charging to upgrade to PS5 version and now increasing a console price 2 years after it was released 😳
There's no good reason to do this, unless Sony believes they will keep immediately selling out all the consoles they produce. We'll see if they're correct.

Better idea. Slim it down and cut the cost.
Not an easy task and they already did cut the costs with the new revision of the PS5 which has a less massiv heatsink with less use of copper.

I wouldn't have thought that the situation is still so tense after one and a half years and that the PS5 is almost never available in retail stores. It's surprising, but understandable, that the console is now even more expensive.

I'm all the happier to be there since day 1 with 2 consoles. I hope no defect creeps in.

I do even wonder if they are going to increase the % of digital consoles made. It's still a loss maker.

Loss maker? Not at all. You are bound to the store with the digital edition and the prices are impressive. The games are sometimes 50% more expensive than the disc in retail stores. After a handful of purchased games in the store, Sony has already made plus with the sale of the digital edition to you.

Well everything is increasing in price so I'm guessing that's the reason. I don't think they really know until the new price takes effect.

Problem is you have aging tech that's increasing in price where it should be dropping, hardware across all appliances drop in price as they get older. I believe this is unprecedented but maybe someone knows better?

Out of all time, they choose now, this is a dumb decision

The correct strategy would be to raise the price during the GPU inflation years ago, and decrease the price now. But no, they choose to raise the price when GPU price crashes, what the hell are they even thinking.

Upfront its a loss maker, that was my poorly explained point. Yes, you can make more margin on software purchases but it does depend on what the attach rate is and what software they are buying.

~70 usd is alot to make up as a platform holder if you are making a 30% cut. Probably need close to 200 usd in additional software revenue

My energy bill almost tripled this year for the same use. Fun living in EU right now.

Jeez, I know inflation has been killing many industries lately but Sony passing on the costs to consumers is just a low blow. If neither Microsoft or Nintendo follow suit with similar price increases for their hardware, this will look especially bad.

Not to mention I've been told by armchair GAF analysts that Sony usually begins making profit on their console sales within 12 months of launch. Either they were talking out of their behinds or Sony is hurting for money.
