PS5 owner: I just bought a Xbox Series X - I'm very impressed

Both consoles are pretty fantastic. Microsoft had more work to do than Sony this time around. As I understand it, Mark Cerny had to lobby Sony Japan to design the PS4 and there was a lot of resistance. He got it done. Every fundamental problem the PS3 had was fixed by the PS4.

That was what Microsoft had to do with Series X and S for this generation, i.e., hose all the Don Mattrick out of the Xbox brand. And they did it. It doesn't have a slow hard drive or try to be all in one media solution or a weak memory etc. Heck, if you go into the networking options, there's some stuff there that's really interesting, like packet identification for QOS settings. Kind of forward thinking stuff.

MS did all of that with the Xbox One X.

This gen I always wanted to move to Xbox over Ps, especially because I don't give a fuck about the first party games from Sony. But... Square Enix fucked me up and decided to make all their major titles exclusives to PS5 atm. So there's that. But I'm with everyone jumping ship right now, MS is proving to be a much more future proof leader over Sony which came out with a console conceptually dated already, games included.

I sin because I can't otherwise.
Why do you think sony games are outdated?

Are you including the slow ass non-replaceable HDD, because that made using the One X torture. PS4/PS4 Pro may have limited the bandwidth on its SATA interface, but putting an SSD in there made a big difference. I'm pretty sure One X also had the HDMI pass-through stuff.

The only thing they did take out was the Kinect port, so you needed to get the USB adapter for it. That was progress.

The platform itself did not change. Higher clock speeds on the CPU and a way better GPU configuration sure, but it was a better version of the same fundamental platform.

I couldn't get rid of that thing fast enough. It's the only time I've ever traded in a console.

I wonder if OP ever ended up getting a GPU. Prices are definitely a lot better now. I was the opposite, on the verge of getting an Xbox S/X or a PS5 but now I might get something like a 6700XT for about $300-$400 used. I have a feeling that once the new high-end NVIDIA/AMD GPUs come out (without any mid range), all the worry will sort of die down and midrange GPU prices might even go up. It's kinda obvious that NVIDIA and AMD are doing everything possible to keep prices sky high so maybe now (while some GPU owners are having a panic attack and selling low) is a good time to buy used before Lovelace and RDNA3 are out.

I had 13TB hooked up to my One X (and now Series X).
Yeah but that's external storage for games, not running the underlying OS. The UI used to stutter and hang. I had a two terabyte external SSD and a 4 TB HDD on mine and that did not make that console any less laggy.

I still have those drives on my Series X, but I'm going to have to bite the bullet and get one of those Seagate expansion to drives soon. I'm not looking forward to it. I don't want to cold store my Series X games and transfer them back and forth.

I would buy the PS5 sometime down the road I guess. Fact is 95% of the PS5/Xbox library is the same.
This is going to become less and less true over the next few years as platforms buy up publishers.

I can imagine there actually being very little crossover in 5–10 years time.

Xbox Series X is great hardware with a terribly dated UI and dashboard. Once it gets a revamp, it will be great.
The xbox os is pretty damn great now imo. I prefer it over any other consoles OS.

Nvidia and AMD are actually supporting GPU prices like crazy with the AIBs. They've been caught out by the sudden overnight drop in demand a few months ago.

I think we will see cheap prices leading up to the launch of next gen cards. Then PC will be leagues ahead of the console tech. Which is a shame in a way, because these consoles haven't really had chance to flex any next gen before PC will frog jump them. Even in the mid range when that launches early next year.

I have both, PS5 and XBox and on the software side, Playstation is simply better.
Except quick resume, that is awesome and I miss it everytime I use my playstation.

But in general, the xbox OS is much more buggy in general. Stuff that just works on the playstation can be a hassle on xbox. For example: I use a USB thumbdrive with music on it to stream it while playing games. On Playstation, it's simple, copy the music to the drive, select the drive in the music app and you're good. Even supports folders, very convenient.

On xbox? Copy music, plug it in. Doesn't work. Xbox natively only supports streaming music though spotify. Do google search, find out you have to install an app from the store to stream your own music. Install it, works, but doesn't support folders (unlike playstation). What a bummer. On top of that: if I don't unplug the drive after I turn off the xbox, the xbox will lose pairing with the wireless controller next time I turn it on. Stuff like that happens a lot on xbox but not on playstation. I honestly was surprised by that, because I thought if Microsoft does one thing right, it's the software side of things.

I still have the GT 405 in my PC. I probably will buy RDNA3/Lovelace in the 300-400€ Range.

No. You need a charging base for your batteries.
My biggest gripe with separate batteries and why I prefer the DualSense solution. I never run out of battery during gaming because I simply put the cable in at the end of a session and it's fully loaded for the next one.

With rechargeable I'd need to put them batteries out, put them into a charger, put them back in when charged.

It's simply not as convenient.

You buy a 4 pack of eniloops and you always have two ready to rock. You get the pleasure of feeling like you are re loafing a clip and the battery's legit last about 4 times longer than one dualsense charge. Its the best.

Yeah, but I still had to fiddle with the pack mid gaming session, put it out and the other one in. Unfortunately I'm not feeling badass like reloading a magazine but annoyed. Can't help it.

After having a dead Dualshock 4 battery after 6 months of use, I dropped this habit entirely.

The batteries are more convenient and if they get old, I just need to buy some more - last time I replaced my batteries was in 2017 and they still last a good week of use.

Why would you need to do it mid session? That should be extremely rare. I have to put my ps5 pad on charge every other session, with my xbox you get hours even after you are down to the low battery indicator. So I just switch out at the end. Worse case, if it was mid game I'd just pause and switch it in like 10 seconds. Or do it when I'm grabbing a drink or toilet visit etc.

I've often had to plug my ps5 in if the kids have been playing and not plugged it in like I do after every gaming session. Playstation battery life is so short it's kinda wack.

It gets even better than that. Just use a charging station and all you have to do is put the controller down when you're finished... Nothing beats battery pack + charging station. With 2 controllers if you make very very long sessions.

Swapping batteries on my Quest 2 controllers feels like I'm back in the eighties.

Yet you are in 2022 and a lot of companies see the benefits of double AAs.

Less waste as well compared to lithium ion controllers that will be e waste to many when the battery dies. Plus you can use those double AAs in anything. I've got loads now, always vharged and ready to go and I use them in multiple devices in the home.

I guess it's just personal preference but I'm double AAs all day!

I just did a build during COVID and it was super high end, but I'd be lying if said I wasn't looking at cards if they end up at stupid cheap price points.

I really want to hold off on another build until Gen 5 PCIe and DDR5 timings get better. But doing a build when things are cheap is way better than trying to do one when prices rubber band back up.

Yeah, I thought about that but was reluctant of the additional cost because game pads are expensive enough already for my taste so I was hesitant to spend even more just to get the convenience I know from the DualSense.

However, because I have to rely on my Xbox controller for my PC (and DualSense support is still all over the place) I decided to buy a battery pack I can charge with the USB-C cable so I have the same convenience as with the DualSense.

I'd rather have a higher gamerscore than miss out on platinum because I cba doing all achievements always in games.

If it wasn't for x360 achievements, you would never have had trophies since the first ps3 games doesn't even have trophies.
It was an afterthought from Sony seeing Microsoft's system.

I wanted to build my "own Xbox" at first , but I cant get a hold of a graphics card (for retail). I upgraded to a Ryzen 7 5800X, 32GB DDR4, ITX Mainboard, 750W ITX corsair PSU, ssupd meshlicius case etc. a couple months ago in hope I could buy a GPU in the near future, but I gave up. My PC has a cheap geforce 405 in it right now, just to work, so I cant game on it. Instead I found a used XSX + Turtle Beach 700 Gen 2 Headset for 550€ and went for it. I had the OG Xbox, Xbox 360 and now the Xbox Series X. Havent had a Xbox in almost 10+ years and I never thought I would buy one again, since all Xbox Studio Games come to PC too, but fuck it. I actually bought the 20 yr anniversary xbox controller for my PC before I got the XSX, just because it looked so cool and reminded me of the OG Xbox Controller (the plastics and rubber back feel way better than the controller that comes with the XSX btw).

So here are my impressions as a "longtime" Playstation owner and PC player:

- The hardware is MUCH better than PS5. Smaller footprint, looks sleek, more powerful (at least on paper), bigger SSD (approx. 800GB usable vs. 667GB or so), SILENT under load, much quiter than my PS5 (mine has pretty loud coilwhine, e.g. COD Vanguard with 120Hz)
- Startup from standby is almost INSTANT!!! (2-3seconds vs 20 seconds PS5 rest mode - Can someone confirm this too!?)
- the UI feels much more joyful to use and is pretty customizable (custom wallpapers, accent colors, pinning apps and games , dark mode, night mode, etc.)
- 120Hz +4k output on all games (my LG C1 says so at least, which should reduce latency and input lag even on 30fps games!?)
- Dolby vision in all HDR10 games (I think!?)
- Quick Resume (I dont think PS5 will ever get this feature, maybe PS6)
- better BC and FPS boost on many old titles
- Dev Mode for emulation (didnt try that one for now)
- Many more features (VRR, 1440p support, freesync support, controller button mapping, linking player profiles to controllers e.t.c.)

I also must mention some things I DONT LIKE:
- The controller feels "dead" and oldschool. No speakers/mic, not rechargable. The vibration is almost never used (in games I played at least) and I miss the adaptive triggers (Returnal used them heavily)
- MS Games dont look and feel "next gen" (except flight sim maybe) compared to PS Studio Games like Demons souls, Spiderman MM, Ratchet & Clank, Returnal etc.
- MS Games are very big (mostly around 100GB for Flight Sim, Halo Infinite, Forza, Gears etc.)
- Cant upgrade SSD with regular m2 SSDs (bought a 2TB Samsung 980 Pro for my PS5 on black friday for 250€)

I will probably use the XSX as a game pass machine and will still buy 3rd party games + 1st party titles for PS5 since I prefer the controller and I only know one other person with an Xbox LOL.

Am I missing something? Please correct me If I told BS.

PS. Oh and did I mention Game pass? I bought 3yrs for 80€ or so (thx to mydealz.de), which is like the price of one PS5 game over here.

This reads like an Xbox add. The hardware is pretty similar. "MUCH" better is just cap. It has a more powerful GPU, that's all. PS5 has several other advantages (no split memory, higher fill rates, higher clocks, higher IO throughput). The bigger SSD is useless when games are 40% bigger on average, because the lack of Kraken tech. And expansion is much cheaper and much faster at the same time. My PS5 is also very silent, so perhaps you have a faulty one?

I have no experience with the Xbox UI, but I'm hearing a lot of complaints from people I know that do. Cluttered, slow, same as last gen etc. I agree PS5 UI isn't prefect, but they both have their pro's and cons.

QR is nice, but also not super "quick" all the time. PS5 has activity cards. Games like Ghost of Tsushima cold boot under 6 seconds and you can resume specific activities. You can also drop in specific MP modes bypassing splash screens etc. Absent with QR (which also needs to be supported).

Hard disagree on achievements being superior. There is no reason why you can't have both an equivalent to Platinum and a gamerscore. That's the one thing missing from achievements.

Yes, achievements were invented by Microsoft. Sony just made them better, imo.

I thought claiming Activity cards were anything like Quick Resume died out in Q1 2021? Because it's not nearly the same thing at all, and doesn't result in the same outcome

Yeah, I also feel MS can borrow quite a bit from Sony's trophies implementation. There's always room for improvement and we consumers benefit when that happens.

Yeah, it would be great. Maybe the Xbox store could get all those great Jump/Run 5-minute click for a trophy games. "pie_tears_joy::pie_roffles::pie_grinning_big_eyes::pie_grinning_smiling::pie_grinning_sweat:

I hated the trophy thing when I had a PS4. It felt like a poor copy of Xbox Achievements and Gamer Score. I would hate to see anything similar on Xbox.

Look, I know you can open up an Xbox and put a new drive in there and flash whatever firmware you need to flash, but Sony made that a feature. Here it's a hack. Don't get me wrong, I wish Microsoft built in user replaceable storage and we wouldn't be having this conversation if they did. But they didn't and I'm willing to bet the percentage of Xbox One X owners that replaced the internal HDD themselves is in the low single digits.

I'm actually not okay with the PS5 having internal storage that isn't user replaceable. You can add an NVMe SSD for additional storage, but if the internal storage goes, you're looking at a warranty replacement or some soldering. Both the PS3 and PS4 ran their operating systems off of drives designed to be replaced by the owner very easily. I know you put storage right on the motherboard to keep things fast, but it can't be so fast in the PS5 that games can't also run off of an SSD you yourself install.

If MS separates main game achievos from DLC ones and implements something akin to a Platinum, then it's pretty much perfect. The idea of every game having 1000 GS is just so much more appealing to me than what Sony does with trophies.

I had a ps5 and xbsx but sold the PS5 for profit and bought another xbsx. Personally I prefer the Series X aesthetic and gamepass is just amazing. I hate the Xbox dash or whatever you call the OS UI. It's boring, clunky and is ugly. Also the series X controller feel like that cheap Fisher Price plastic, plus the triggers are bad. Other than those the series X is been phenomenal.

Sosokrates

Report me if I continue to console war
MS did all of that with the Xbox One X.
Also I dont think the Xbox one was a bad design. It was just weaker then the PS4.

Microsoft could of closed the power gap if they wanted. The og x1 was really quiet, they could of added a bigger and better heatsink, turned up the fan and clocked the GPU to 1205mhz giving it a slight compute edge of 1.85tflops, it would still of had to contend with its less then ideal RAM setup, but once devs got used to it the GPU power was the main bottleneck. They would of had a good idea of the PS4 specs. Even with 4gb its more powerful GPU would of caused the X1 some problems, but they believed in there idea and were not bothered about being the most powerful until it was to late.

I don't think that hiding those gimmicks behind a 120 bucks paywall would piss off people that are intereteset in it. Also they would have to implement it in their First Party games for the small percentage of Xbox Owners that would buy the Elite. If Microsoft decides to use it, they will make a new standard controller with it. But i doubt it. Not everybody likes and and battery life seems to suck.

What M$ will probably do:
- Create new standard controller with haptic feedback, adaptive triggers etc. and bundle it with new consoles
- release the new standard controller for people who would like to upgrade
- new SDK for developers to implement those new features for new/older titles.
- release new Elite Series 3 with those features + new Elite controller features.

I mean Sony did the same with the PS1 Controllers (Analog Sticks) and PS3 controllers (Rumble)

They should do that, plus add HALL sticks. Lower priced controllers already have it. Finally something worth of the name "Elite"

I want to hear more about the joyful UI.
I still like it more than PS5 UI. It feels more modern to me. Maybe they will overhaul it to match it to Windows 11 UI with more rounded corners and transparency etc. Only gripe I have is that it is slow sometimes.

I have both and I like XBX more. Cleaner interface, the controller is better but I have a general dislike of Dualshocks/waves tho PS5 controller>ps4.

I have the Series X for about 2 months now and have had the PS5 since launch. My last Xbox console was the 360 (excellent console except red ring of death).

So my impressions after 2 months:
- Console design is better than PS5 and no coil whine! Nice job MS.
- Controller comes with no rechargeable battery? How? Why??
- Controller feels like a controller from 2 generations back to me. It feels so cheap. Face buttons and D-Pad have a loud plastic sound when you press them and rumble is so much worse than PS5 and Switch. I turned off rumble in the system menu because of it. But it does the job as a controller with no issues.
- I'm not a fan of the UI but I guess that's personal. In some games you're transported back to the Xbox interface to choose a profile when starting a new game, what is that about? They can't use the profile you're logged in with on your Xbox as default?
- Console is buggy. Weird glitch everytime I'm launching Halo infinite. Controller has lost pairing with the console for 2 times allready (had to turn the console completely off to fix it). All my screenshots I took from games (stored internal on console) suddenly dissapeared. They are gone now forever.
- I bought Halo and Gears. Haven't bought Forza yet. But after that, I don't know of any other big budget Xbox exclusives. Where are the games? And not a single series X/S exclusive yet?

It is certainly a good console overall but to be honest, I expected a bit more.
