Epic won’t ban NFT games in response to Minecraft stance, Tim Sweeney says

Reverse groomer.
of course they wouldn't, they need to give out free fucking games just to make a small dent on steam's userbase. gaining the NFT crowd is just another way for doing it

To compare something isn't to equate them. They both offer marketplaces, previously the Minecraft marketplace had NFT mods, created and sold by users... and now they banned them.

EGS recently (as in like a month ago) put the first NFT / Web3 game up on the storefront.

It's just using one marketplace's (that is quite different) action to then ask Tim Sweeney why he's allowing NFT games now.

Why would anyone ask him?

Well he previously basically said "fuck off" to NFT game pitches on EGS:

There you have Tim Sweeney, fake free market douchebag, clearly enforcing his opinion of something onto his store. Now suddenly he's got this completely different attitude about content on his store, because he LOOOVES to sound like an ethical warrior fighting against all the other unethical/lesser companies running stores.

None of this is equating EGS to Minecraft or even really trying to "compare them" outside of "other people sell stuff on your marketplace."

I completely disagree.

They are being compared, for some reason, and it's a disingenuous or ignorant comparison.

The main point is scope.

Minecraft is one game, with a very specific atmosphere and environment that Microsoft want to maintain around it. You ain't going to get any gore or vivid sex mods being sold there either.

The EGS is a store. It has a much wider scope, and that includes more controversial topics. I don't see why NFTs should be treated any different, especially when there can be decent uses for them.

Why can't a "store" also enforce a tone? Like what is the problem with that?

If Nickelodeon ran a digital store they'd obviously only sell kids/teen oriented games right?

GOG has a "no DRM" ethos to it, a personal ethos enforced by the owners of... a digital store. (with some small exceptions, but in general you can't release a game on GOG w/ DRM)

EGS has been COMPLETELY based on Tim Sweeney and team selecting what games can come to the store since it's inception too.. like it's the most "editorialized" online store for games at this point maybe with GOG a close second. The dude is just backtracking on everything he's said.. he said no NFT games, said no porn games, said no "crappy" games (again, his personal opinion being enforced).

It's completely normal for ANY store ANYWHERE, digital or not, to limit products sold that go against what their brand represents.

It was completely normal for Tim Sweeney to say porn games aren't a part of the EGS brand too...or NFT games, or "Crappy" games. All things he did in the past.

And the store continues to have editorial guidelines.. so there is that too.

The whole concept of it being "wrong" for a company who sells things, to do any sort of editorializing on them is just so bizarre. Imagine if Walmart was forced to sell sex swings and porn and sex dolls lol

They can. But why would EGS want to? They are only there to sell games, and are really the only competitor to Steam (who also sell all and sundry, including their fair share of dodgy early-access games).

So it's fine for EGS to sell games with NFTs. Don't like it? Well... I'll let you use your galaxy-sized noggin to work out what to do.

I don't think @ IntentionalPun IntentionalPun implied that there was anything wrong with EGS choosing to participate in the NFT nonsense. They can choose the products they want in their store, just like any other shop. Nothing right or wrong about it.

The funny thing is implying that there is some kind of virtue involved in the decision. Or acting like every store should sell every product. That's like going to Walmart and bitching that they don't have X model widget for sale when the Target across the street has it. That's the breaks, go to Target.

And what has that got to do with the OP?

I didn't need a lecture pointing out stuff I already knew. GOG (generally) only sell DRM-free games? Oh, thanks, I never knew that.

Some users in the thread were having a laugh at the circular thinking of the Sweeney tweet, that's all. It's funny to some because he seems to be virtue signalling against other stores that he feels are virtue signalling.

I don't have a problem with them selling NFT games. I don't have a problem with them selling porn games either.

I just reject the idea that there's any onus on a digital store to have some sort of non-editorialized "free market." In a sense, I disagree with Sweeney's statement, and he also disagreed and patted himself on the back for doing the opposite like 2 years ago lol

It's fine if anyone wants to truly run a "Free market" digital store.. it's also perfectly fine if you want to run a digital store that editorialized based on your brand or even personal ethos. As Sweeney clearly has done, multiple times.

I mean here's a quote from TIm himself:

“A GTA game would be fine to us, but Epic’s not going to distribute porn games or bloatware or asset flips, or any sort of thing that’s meant to shock players. The PC’s an open platform, and if we don’t distribute it in our store you can still reach consumers directly.”
'

Not sure why you decided to resort to lame "galaxy brain" insult crap.. the fuck did I say to deserve that?

"I believe stores and operating system makers shouldn’t interfere by forcing their views onto others."
Unless it's the view that paid exclusives are acceptable practice in the PC space. That benefits my enterprise, therefore is exempt.

Please look forward to my next thoroughly unsurprising heel turn.

Timmy needs to push his trashy game store, and will accept anything at this point. So much for curation.

I’m just waiting for him to sell the majority of Epic to Tencent. Only a matter of time.

Attitudes like yours are so silly.

Hint: don't look into Lord Gaben's history and background.

Nothing silly about. Epic’s hated by the PC community, and Tim’s absolute failure to buy his way in shows it.

You might accept shitty business tactics, but we don’t.
