PS Blog post on TMNT Cowabunga Collection (Still no release date!)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection hits PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 real soon. We know the waiting is hard as shell… but it’ll be worth it!

I wonder what’s keeping them from setting a date. Is Konami too busy making slot machines to care?

Yeah, but this is Konami we're talking about... Also considering that Sonic Origins was also released in not the best shape...yeah...cook until it's done. I'll die on this hill.

Sonic Origins was not the original roms. They rebuilt them all in a new engine.

This is literally a handful of roms and some emulators.

2 very different things.

Which they released many years ago and was fine. The only real change is the addition of new modes like Mission Mode and the Mirror Mode...oh and they changed the music to avoid issues with Michael Jackson.

Cook. It. Until. It's. Done.

Except they’re not changing these games like Sonic Origins. Do you not see how you can’t compare the two?

Again, the versions Origins are not the same ones they released previously. Sega being entirely incompetent at even the most basic things is the problem with Origins.

Sega could have spent another year with Origins and you would still have gotten a broken piece of shit.

With Konami you're literally getting some roms and their emulators. Even a super slick UI and filters could have been done by now.

Personally I couldn't care either way. I'm not going to spend $30+ on some games I can play on their original hardware in, at the very least, equal visual quality.

Also fuck Konami.

But they aren’t ports. They’re roms running in emulators.
Fine then.

The only other thing I can think of is that they're delaying the compilation so more people will buy Shredder's Revenge and giving that a chance to do well before they release this compilation.

Well, we can agree on the bolded at least. lol

I imagine it would have been out already if Shredder's Revenge didn't come out. Didn't want steal the thunder of an original work with a baker's dozen of old ROM's.

Still, weird that we're not hearing anything since the announcement.

It's all well and good just saying "it's just a bunch of ROMs in emulators" over and over again but there's more that goes into a retro compilation than that, especially when Digital Eclipse is making it.

Putting aside the fact that the 13 games span five different systems and as such there are five different emulators to optimise, Digital Eclipse's games always include extensive 'museum' modes filled with galleries and behind-the-scenes stuff.

Konami's already said it will “include loads of extras using imagery from the original cartoons, comics and other historic TMNT media content […] connecting the franchise across the various mediums," so all that imagery has to be checked to make sure it's legally sound and doesn't contain anything that can't be used.

(For example, when Digital Eclipse did the Disney Afternoon Collection, they had to manually edit all the box art and magazine ads featured in the galleries to remove references to Nintendo etc)

So no, it's not just dumping 13 ROMs in a folder and making nice wallpaper for it. Tell me you haven't developed a game etc

Thank you!

The bezel implementation is so wrongheaded it's really hard to believe Digital Eclipse knows what it's doing. Look at how much vertical space is completely wasted with this design.

When you run emulators, you want as much vertical resolution as possible to get the best upscale. It becomes even more critical if you have some kind of CRT shader. Every bit of resolution you can get helps, and they're wasting 100+ vertical pixels on basically nothing.

I haven't seen one commercial Digital Eclipse release that wasn't worse than just emulating the same games on a computer.

Certain games have had online play added as well
Oh, but I thought they were emulated!? You just slap them in a folder right and call it a day, right? It's not you have to actually make sure the emulators work with the games and then make sure the newer features work within the emulation.

That won't cause ANY issues!

No, maximising the vertical resolution wouldn't give you the "best upscale". It would lead to shimmering because it wouldn't be a full integer scale (i.e. multiplied by a whole number).

The SNES resolution was (mainly) 256x244, so if you were going to upscale that for a 1080p display then a 4x integer upscale would make it 896 pixels high (hence the gaps at the top and bottom in the screenshot), and a 5x upscale would make it 1120 (which wouldn't fit on the screen).

The screenshot above shows the highest integer scaling they can do on the game to ensure it's the "best upscale", in that it retains its full quality. If it's like any of the other Digital Eclipse games it'll have options to stretch it higher vertically and horizontally, should you prefer, with the result being that the picture 'shimmers' a bit when the game scrolls because the pixels won't be the perfect shape.

In short, you've jumped to a big conclusion there, and even that conclusion isn't accurate.

It has to be as good as the recent Capcom collection at the very least....more so because a collection like this much less a new turtles game doesn't come by everyday...

Be nice if the reason it is taking so long is they decided to include online for Turtles in Time SNES too.

Actually you're completely wrong. You just do a integer upscale (where you'd have overscan if it wasn't a perfect match), and then you'd do a bilinear downscale to full screen. Clean image at the right aspect ratio with no shimmering.

Integer scaling sucks because the aspect ratio won't be right.

Thanks for playing. You lose. Better luck next time.

I'm not sure why you're complaining about this, you can already get the best customized emualted version of any of these, and you're fully aware of how to do it, so just do that.

This collection is for nostalgia junkies that don't give a fuck about any of that, they just want to remember when times were simpler with memories they associate with these games.

I realize that it's basically made for rubes, and that's why they can get away with handling every aspect of it incompetently, but that doesn't make it right.

it's a couple of roms.

it was "done" 20 years ago.
Konami has put out some of the best retro collections around. US / Europe / Japanese versions. All instructions booklets scanned and box art for all regions. Interviews with staff, timelines, glossary, original development artwork and notes scanned.

Ok, cool.

Companies operate in the global world of localization, laws, IP renewals, distribution chains, and licensing.

Freebies for the PCeebies, bypasses all of that noise.

More like, "in the real world, people who aren't RUBES don't acknowledge the fraudulent extension of corporate copyrights that shady companies and corrupt politicians pushed through, and once your game is 25 years old, it's FREE UNTIL THE END OF TIME, so deal with it, LOSERS--yeah, it's free, as in so free that you can literally type in 'name of game' + 'rom' + site:archive.org and download it in LESS THAN A SECOND free."

Want to make NEW MONEY? Earn it. Do something NEW. Put in 1/100th of the work that free fan projects do. Do something like Ninja Warriors Again where you make a 4 player version of the SNES TMNT2. Do SOMETHING. ANYTHING.

You can't just keep double, triple, quadruple, and quintuple dipping.

Everything is free if you steal it :messenger_winking:

Copyright infringement isn't theft.

In copyright law, infringement does not refer to theft of physical objects that take away the owner's possession, but an instance where a person exercises one of the exclusive rights of the copyright holder without authorization. Courts have distinguished between copyright infringement and theft.

Konami has actually been better than most with their retro collections.
