Hey GAF,

I’m looking into buying an OG VITA with OLED screen so I can play Uncharted and Killzone while I have downtime at work. What should I look out for in terms of firmware/quirks with the system?

Another thing, I have humongous hands so I’m sure they’ll cramp up during playtime. I’m looking for Vita Grips as a fix. What are y’all’s suggestions when it comes to grips primarily for comforting large hands?

The only firmware quirk with the Vita is having to do a finger swipe across the screen every time the OS boots up (you "peel" back the welcome screen). I always hated that because it's unnecessary finger smudging. What you can do to avoid the full swipe is, gently push your finger on the top right edge of the screen, then while doing so gently pushing another finger on the bottom left edge of the screen. This will cause the screen to open without having to smear finger grease across the whole screen.

I have large hands as well and always buy grips for my portables. The one I bought for my OG Vita was this:

But I see it's no longer in stock. However this one is in stock and seems well reviewed:

Whoa that price. I bought this exact thing before... I think I paid about 30 some bucks in 2019.., and still thought it was an expensive thing.

Back when I was trying to use my Vita as PS4 remote machine, I bought this one.
It worked, but felt really cheap and looked pretty horrible. (And mine was being sent from China, so it took like a month to get)

Not as comfortable nor felt solid either... my hands were getting cramps even with this, so I rarely used it. The back paddle was held by some sort of silicon tape or sort... which I didn't feel comfortable using - so I normally kept that back paddle (L2/R2) off. It just felt a bit wobbly and heavy too with that paddle.

OP - Honestly I'd suggest go w/o this type of device. Looks cleaner and it is not that bad to hold. I had no issues playing long sessions with Persona 4 or Muramasa.

I had a vita and got bored of it pretty quick.
Sold it and nostalgia hit me hard after a while and got another one and sold it just as quick. I feel Switch has waaay more to offer and Steam Deck is the best handheld at the moment. You should get those

Last year I considered getting an OLED Vita and Muramasa by Vanillaware. Then the OLED Switch came out and I ended up getting that and Metroid Dread instead.

In my research I found that the Vita uses proprietary memory cards and the OLED Vita uses a proprietary power cable and it doesn’t seem worth the hassle to play a few exclusive games when the Switch is out, has a better OLED screen, usb-c power connector, non-proprietary memory cards, and tons of support at the moment.

Right now, I find that the Vita is still a better investment that the Switch.

The Vita should be soft-modded. You get a much better d-pad than the Switch Lite (not even talking about the standard Switch). There is a very vast library (much lager than Switch) and you also get all PS1 and PSP games running natively on the console.

I say this as an owner of both Vita and Switch Lite for my handheld gaming needs. I enjoy both, but Vita remains the more interesting system. I don't play third person or first person action games on these consoles. I only look for a 100% handheld quality experience, by the way.

Hey guys, just got back from work and saw all the suggestions and responses and I thank you all for them.

I already own a switch and played 3 games on it, albeit connected to my LG OLED and using a DS4, and thought it was worthwhile so I imagine that 2 games on a VITA would be fine.

I carry my vita to travel, my switch feels like it can fall apart anytime. Haven't tried steam deck yet.

ur gonna have to get in the nitty gritty PSVita reddit or something to figure out what Firmware to look for. Because it changes

there is some good grips.

You can check Amazon ebay to find grips. There is a great modding community out there. A little google search will help you. And with your vita modded, you can buy an SD adapter which negates having to buy the proprietary cards. The only downfall to that is the adapter does take the cartridge slot. (Though you can buy a SD adapter that takes the place of the 3g spot on the board of the 3G models) But if you are modding…well…search google. If you decide not to mod and buy into physical carts, then don’t go any bigger than a 32 GB memory card. They did release a 64 GB card but it was prone to failure.

Some hella weird details in this thread: "Played 3 switch games using a DS4 on my LG OLED. I would LIKE exactly 2 games worth of entertainment value for a different game fun time event."

Are you a DALL-E AI but for really odd forum posts?

"Create a neogaf post mentioning old hardware but make sure it is awkward like you farted at the dinner table."

(I'm just taking the piss OP....the green text and numbers just threw me off....carry on)
