Triple Dipping

Lately there’s this trend of games releasing exclusively on one platform initially and then later releasing with an upgraded version:

Persona 5 was on ps3/4 @ 720p/1080p 30 fps, then Persona 5 Royal on ps4 pro at 4K 30 fps, and now P5R will be on everything except Switch, at 4K 60 fps.

FF7 Remake was on ps4 pro 1600p 30 fps, then FF7 Remake Intergrade on PS5 at native 4K or 60 fps, then FF7RI on Epic Store for 4K and 60 fps, and now on Steam.

Ghost of Tsushima was on ps4 pro, then Directors Edition was 4K 60 fps on ps5, and with the way Sony is going lately I’m wondering if it will end up on Steam too.

Anyone else double or triple dipping a lot lately because you want to play a game at launch but then you also want the “best” version of a game or to have it on the platform of your choice? I know companies pay for exclusivity but lately they seem to be doing a lot of re-releasing. What are your thoughts on this trend?

I think the only game I recently doubledipped on were RE games. Mostly for speedrunning.

Bought it on console first then found out it was faster speedrun on PC. Console for the physical disc/steelbook/collector’s edition and PC for the mods and speedruns.

Got Control as a monthly PS+ game.
Got it again as an Epic weekly free game.
Got it again as an Amazon Prime game.
It also was on Gamepass and now it's on PS+ Extra.

Only played it to test xCloud when it was released here and didn't get very far. :messenger_grinning_squinting::messenger_crying:

I already wait for the "GOTY" usually, mostly because I don't have time to pay games at launch and I also hate getting content metered out to me by the devs. "GOTY" solves this usually.

Marvel's Spider-Man is one of the few games that I'll triple-dip on, because who could've known they would have done a PS5 version and now a PC version? But again, I'll usually wait until for the PC release because that's my default platform as of late.

I only double dip the games I played in the shitty 30 fps ps4 gen, whether on ps5 or on steam. Persona 5 is tricky, I played both og and Royal on ps4 and the game isnt exactly different on higher framerates since it's mostly visual novel/turn-based combat 90% of the game so prolly wont triple dip on that.

Yes. Pissing me off big time. Last one I remember is House of the Dead Remake, which initially launched on the Switch, only to be announced for other platforms a while after. As is with most games, they show performance issues on Nintendos weak hardware, so you get shafted if you bought the Switch version. In THoTD:R case, there's also the whole aiming controls wormhole I'm not going into.

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
Never did that as far as I remember, but with Persona 5 coming to PC... Yeah it might happen.

And then of course Skyrim gets ported to everything and has received several updates.

Yeah I think my biggest double/triple dips are the recent RE remakes, got them full price on PS4, on sale on steam and xbox
same with the Tomb Raider trilogy as well actually come to think about it. But some of them were freebies on PS+ or epic game store etc.

I only do it with remastered version on different gens, never with the same game on the same gen on multiple platforms.

All the extra dipping stopped once I switched to PC.

If I get it for free, which is often the case - that’s fine. But I don’t pay for it.

Most of the things you're naming were either free upgrades or $10/$20 upgrades. Final Fantasy 7R Intergrade is free to owners of Final Fantasy 7R on PS5. Only Persona 5 to Royal was a full price "double dip," and even then you're not buying the same game twice with Royal's additions. Also, Royal on PS5 will likely just be free to PS4 Royal owners or a $10 upgrade.

When people say double or triple dipping, they are talking about buying the same game multiple times at full price or close to it. Not free upgrades.

FF7 ps4 to ps5 was free because they knew you were also going to buy the Yuffie DLC which was exclusive to ps5

Personally I don't consider it double dipping if the original purchase is on a platform I no longer actively play.

I usually only double dip. If I love a game THAT much, I think it warrants another purchase on a better platform. Or, if I loved the game a ton, and missed out on the collector's but have the option to still get it.

It hasn't happened TOO many times, but the times I've done it, I certainly haven't regretted it!

The only games I've ever double dipped on were The Master Chief Collection even though I already owned all the games it was such an amazing value for all those games at the price of 1 game and the BioShock collection when it was on sale to get all the DLC. I like to buy my games once. They only game I would be interested in buying is a modernized remake of Morrowind.

I think games like TLOU, Skyrim and GTA5 are completely ridiculous but I guess if people are dumb enough to keep buying them, they'll keep grabbing that easy cash.

Skyrim: PC normal and SE, 360, and PSVR
Dragon's Dogma: PS3 original, PS4 Dark Arisen, and PC Dark Arisen (last night as it's on sale)

I think that's it. A good amount of double dips though (only during good sales or discounts).

I've been around for a while, playing since the 8-bit NES. There are a lot of games over the years that I just love and need to have on every platform I own.

Chrono Trigger
Castlevania SotN
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy III/VI
Metal Gear series
Persona 3/4/5
a shit ton of collections of games from the 90's and 2000's.

out those Persona is my weakness. I have 3 FES and will buy 3 Portable when it's out in 2023. I have P4 on PS2 and P4G on Vita/Steam. Bought P5 on PS3 and then on PS4. Bought P5R on PS4 and will be buying it again when it's on Steam.

If it makes money why not? There are worse ways of monetizing, also you aren't obligated to buy the new version, its still the same game

I didn't play the games on the PS2 era, I started playing the Persona 4 Golden on the PS Vita, it was one of the JRPG's that everybody agrees is one of the bests on the system, I loved the game so much that I bought Persona 5 day one on PS4, I went back and played Persona 3 on emulators, bought Persona 4 Golden on Steam, bought PS5 Royal Edition, I even suffered through Persona 5 Strikers on Switch, and even double dip on PC (I hate Musou games) and of course can't wait to buy the collection when it hits Steam.

Held back how because they are 30fps? how did people even lived on consoles, Disgaea 6 doesn't even look like a game that pushes the Switch lmao

Its no difference from what happened with Persona 5 on PS3/4

I’m trying to be better about this gen but last gen there were more games than I care to admit that I originally got on PS4, then double-dipped on Switch to have on the go & finally triple dipped on deep sales to have the better performing versions on Xbox One X >_<

this gen I’m not getting as many multi-platform games on Switch, mostly using my Series X for Game Pass, and getting most games on PS5 because I prefer the DualSense + trophies

I remember there being several reviews that mentioned technical performance issues for Disgaea 6 at launch on Switch, it’s why I passed on the game even though I love the series

I rebuy everything if there's a better console version available afterwards. I do the same with movies. DVD, BD, then 4K.

I've triple dipped GTA 5 (PS3, PS4, PS5)
I have quadruple dipped the physical Night Trap (Sega CD, Vita, PS4, Switch)
I have quadruple dipped the physical Double Switch (Sega CD, Saturn, PS4, Switch)
I have quintuple dipped Quake 1 (Mac physical, PC physical, Steam, PS5, Switch physical)

4 God Tier games worthy of the dips:messenger_tears_of_joy:

Skyrim is probably the worst offender. How many generations and platforms has this game been made for? I mean, I love the game, but I really didn't feel the need to buy the port for my refrigerator. :pie_roffles:

It's has sold over 30 million games, so I guess it makes sense for them to keep milking with additional versions, but I think it crazy that people keep buying them.

Yeah but its not really the Switch fault, sure more powerful hardware would have helped brute force things. But again the Switch doesn’t have much to do with this, its like saying Rune Factory 5 is held back by blaming the system capabilities, sometimes its the developer either rushed the project or doesn't know how to use the hardware well enough, just like any console

I have not double-dipped on anything since some early, niche, third-party Switch games like Puyo Puyo Tetris and Darius Cozmic Collection Arcade. Once even those came to Steam, I came to realize the undeniable truth:

Steam is inevitable. It is the alpha and omega.

I can wait. For GTAV, for FFVII:RI, for whatever.

edit: The Steam deck removed the final value proposition for consoles for me, so now having a portable version isn't even a reason to double-dip.
