The argument is not that "the new Ellie looks 20 but it's OK because 14 year olds can look 20". rofif rofif was just point out that in GENERAL 14 year old girls are not as infantile as you seem to be making out.
Yes, they oftentimes are.
On the specific point about Ellie the argument (and it's a rationale and sensical one) is that the new Ellie in and of herself looks like a normal 14 year old and that it's the original one that looked too young IN COMPARISON to the TLoU2 Ellie. The change was clearly made to bring Ellie in line with her TLoU2 model. Ellie in TLoU2 is 18, she looks 18. This new model for TLoU1 looks like she's around 4 years younger at 14. Using the original model would have been too big a disparity.
Why is TLoU 2 suddenly the determinant and barometer of what a 14 year old looks like for TLoU 1? What grants it the authority of which model it uses in the portrayal of a character that has already been designed?
I honestly don't know what the big deal is here at all. You have millions upon millions of 14 year olds that look like both the original Ellie and the new remastered Ellie, it's bizarre that your acting like the new Ellie is some kind of outlier and that she looks like a 20 year old. She looks 14.
The big deal is two fold:

1) puberty is a period in one's life where the passage of years are most readily apparent in the physical changes the person is undergoing.

2) more crucially, the portrayal of Ellie's youthful, naïve and innocent appearance was integral to the conveyance of those characteristics that defined her personality, something of which the new model fails to convey nearly as well. She looks young, sure, but she also appears experienced.

You imply that they models of the first game are subservient to its sequel and are made to bring them into congruence. Why, considering that the sequel came after it? Because as far as I'm concerned, the sequel should be beholdened to its predecessor in the physical portrayal of its characters, the originals' should not be retroactively altered. That's backwards. Not that they even needed to be, as I have no problem with the progression of Ellie and Joel from 1 to 2.

One of these pictures is of Kaitlyn Dever (the one people keep saying should play Ellie in show) at 17 and they other his here at 14, which is which?

Regardless of if you can tell or not the difference is pretty subtle.
Hey, it's Nate's and Elena's daughter.

She would have been a good Ellie, looks wise.

They are literally using the same exact cutscenes from the first. I saw no differences. They just swapped out the character models and other assets. Everything else is the same.

This isnt a remake like RE2 and RE3. This is more of a asset swap like Demon Souls and SOTC. You dont have to worry about new cutscenes, new gameplay sections with Abby etc.

No Abby no buy.

I love TLOU and I think this is the most pointless remake ever made.
Same for me as well, I enjoyed 1st game on PS3, enough that bought the remaster version on PS4 but thats it for me, I kind of had my fill with TLOU series especially after Part2.

I personally far more hyped for RE4R and FFVIIR Part 2 since they are much more exciting to me.

Edit: Spy X Family for life!

Don’t get why people are upset at Tess new caracter model. She looks pretty much how I thought she was supposed to look from the beginning. It’s more like they couldn’t really nail that middle aged woman look in the PS3 version and now they’ve corrected it.

They completely killed the artstyle here... she just looks like an old woman now.
Which is kinda realistic no?In such an apocalyptic environment everyone would look older than usual old because of constant stress and danger conditions. The one in the remake looks amazing now you can feel from her looks. With PS3 graphics you can’t make a character look good in specific ways in the old one it’s either old or young there is no real separations because the graphics wouldn’t look good to show it that’s why everyone looks samey fake. The better the graphics the more you can even tell from small things like wrinkles around eyes or lines you can’t make that look good and realistic with PS3 graphics especially for NPCs also in the old one she has make up on like a model in the new one not or not much make up makes a world difference in any way

The real answer is that people just want to get upset. In all fairness you see it in Xbox games threads from Sony people making snide remarks about the state of Starfield, but also in every single PS game thread where every single thing is tried to be used as a tool in a console war.

Mad People have long stopped caring about the underlying that is being discussed. Same idiots posting multiple times in multiple threads in multiple ways that they think this remake is unnecessary or that every single thing about the new game is bad. Those people love it when they can argue in their fortress of stubborn strong opinions paired with goalpost moving and completely unreasonable bias.
(This doesn't mean that I think everyone who thinks this remake is unnecassary is an idiot, quite on the contrary the Remake actually isn't necessary, but who is to talk about what is necessary and what is not in the form of entertainment. In all honesty I'd rather have a completely new Naughty Dog AAA game as well over any remake. Always give me the new stuff. But the reality is that the time and resources Naughty Dog needs for TLOU PART 1 PS5 wouldn't be enough to even remotely finish any other new game. Maybe one could argue that we have lost 1-2 years of Days Gone Devs time and then some time for whenever Naughty Dog took over. They also simultaneously have the most projects ever going on and that came after the PS4 generation where they released 3 10/10 games with the most recent one only being 2 years ago)

If I didn't know any better it would make sense to think certain people are paid social engineering shills, but I've been down a dark spiral of negativity and you see what you want to see and that approach makes you unable to see that this game is a above and beyond tech prowess a legitimate remake.

Yes the graphics are amazing in the remake

I do not know if it deserves a full price tag just for that

If it is a 1:1 recreation of the old game then it is not a remake and does not deserve 70 $ no matters what

If it features expanded scenarios or changes in some encounters, enemy engagements, new sections, new levels , incorporating part 2 verticality, crawling then yes it deserves full price tag

I think part of the issue is that the new model looks like a completely different character rather than looking like a true 40+ version of Tess.

But who knows, after seeing all scenes with new Tess doubters might change their minds.

Yes they told already that they made everything new animations combat. So this is not some higher res and fps game or a remaster where they changed few textures this is a complete remake from ground up.What we can’t see in the moment is the new combat and stuff this we will know when previews and reviews will be up.It’s deserves the price tag not because I am a Sony fan or so but because this is a complete new made game.Only because some played it doesn’t mean it is not worth the hard work which was put into it for years. This game is not aimed at people who played it already this is mostly aimed at people who heard a lot but didn’t got the chance to play it so they can now play it in an amazing new way.

Yes the face looks a bit different but that is not so bad maybe they always wanted to make her look like the new version but with PS3 graphics didn’t work or looked good so they made the pretty make up face version which hides details easy because a doll like face doesn’t need details like wrinkles or so

Wild how much better this looks.

Damn

I think this is the most realistic model ND has created yet. Looks amazing.

Will take some time getting used to the new models tho, having played the original and remastered version more than 5 times

Feels like different actors playing the same scenes. So it may not always land as good as the first time for some.

It's an obvious jump in terms of fidelity, but the original still looks so good that I can see myself enjoying some scenes more in the original despite looking less realistic.

Like old Disney movies that were drawn and the ones that are computer generated. One is not better than the other, just different.

Tess was one of my favorite characters in the first game (second overall favorite character, after Joel).

Looking forward to seeing her more realistic model in the remake.

Definitely realistic and I don't deny it's graphically stunning and a valid approach, but I think in this case it's a good example for me where photorealism goes a bit too far and isn't the answer. I'd prefer if ND retained their stylized look that gives their main characters a sense of uniqueness and something still apparent in their 2D art since it feels like a departure from what they had with U4.

Maybe with more scenes I get use to it and she looks better under different angles though, who knows.

I understand you but in such games the realism is everything. It must be dark mature brutal and like real else the games story and everything in the game would become meaningless.Think of soldier James Rain an amazing also brutal film now imagine taking out the blood like someone gets shot no blood the film would become weird not realistic anymore something important would be missing. In an Mario game it doesn’t matter even if they would do a real world Mario game with photo realistic graphics it would only matter there if they would try to tell a real mature story of Mario. then it must be mature with everything which counts like sadness or sickness depression fear hopelessness and so on.If you make an Love story and the love or romantic is missing you can throw it away if you make an serious survival game and the mature realistic approach is not there you can throw it away.If you make comedy without the fun laugh can throw it away same for an horror movie without tension.

Uncharted the comic look worlds because it’s an funny not so serious adventure game.I find Uncharted with photo realistic graphics would even be better woul be like an Indiana jones film. It’s to colorful

That character model on the right needs a lot more things animating, it's straight into uncanny valley-ville. The cardboard clothing looks bad, the hair looks bad, and you have to animate more than just the character lips man; She has facial detail but it isn't moving at all.
The clothing is flexible properly. Why should it move more?

The character on the left looks about 30 years old and the character on the right atleast 55 years old.

The color palette has been toned way down on the right image. I think that emphasizes the worn down / old effect on the character model. Edit: The toning down of the colour red makes the skin look older, less vibrant.

Also if you freeze the frame on the side profile, you can see the shape of their faces is very different. Especially the shape of the nose and the way the lips rest on her face make her seem a lot older.

I wish the new model looked closer to the old one. Graphics are great but she looks like a completely different person.

Seems like they going for a more realistic look.

More like left 20s and right 30s. Especially considering the circumstances they live in. 55 holy shit have you even met women in their thirties and fifties?

I trully can't believe why NaughtyDog didn't consult first with some of the brightest minds here on NeoGaf before making these terrible decisions on the remake.
Mr. NaughtyDog, if you are reading this (I know you are!), please, I beg you! Consult with NeoGaf before making decisions on future games!
