How many people have actually purchased the game? I don't care about how many people downloaded it and tried it, that doesn't tell me anything about how many people actually wanted the game.
Rare usually calls out overall player numbers and engagement milestones, which is important, because more people playing, means more people who might buy Plunder Passes, cosmetics and subscribed to Game Pass. Sea of Thieves hit the 1 million player mark two days after the game launched on March 28, 2018. Numerous announcements later and today they announced they hit the 30 million player mark. The busiest month for SoT was June 2021, where a total of 4.8 million players logged in.

Rare has called out sales numbers only a few times. In 2018, when they hit 5 million players, Joe Neate (Producer) mentioned that about half of those were people who bought the game. Sea of Thieves was #1 on the UK retail charts and #2 on the US retail charts in March of 2018. On December 21, 2021, Rare said they had sold 5 million copies on Steam.

This

I downloaded and played like 20 min until I uninstalled. Lol @ people like me being counted in that 30 mil.
MS does this to look relevant. FH5 has 17 million players within the month of release ....

Sure everyone booted the game ...

Now they are saying concuirrent 1 million; which is still spectacular ...but what like 5% of the numbers of actual players...

I love the graphics, the gaas model, the multiplayer, pirates. As a huge Nintendo fan and someone who had played Rainbow Six Siege almost daily for 7 years this should have been my cup of tea. I thought it was boring as shit. My main complaint was just how clunky the controls felt. I didn’t mind how simple they were but it just felt stiff. I didn’t enjoy controlling it and didn’t enjoy the shallowness of the gameplay. It had all the ingredients I was after except gameplay that could hook me R6 style and entertain me for hours a day for years at a time.

That being said I respect the shit out of this game. GaaS without gouging. I’m sick of people hating on GaaS as if they’re all the same. Like as if there’s no such thing as a shitty non-GaaS game either.

TLOUII announces 10 million copies sold.
NeoGAF: "Doesn't represent how many people liked the game!"

Sea of Thieves announces 30 million players.
NeoGAF: "Yeah, but how many people bought the game?"

Never change, GAF.

Microsoft always loves showing off their playercounts because they know those numbers are easily manipulated. Anyone who played it for as little as 5 minutes get counted, even if they never touched the game again. And since they count by gamertag, there's a lot of people being counted two or three times with smurf and troll accounts.

If Sea of Thieves is a failure at 30M what does that say about TLOU2 at 10M?
Verifiable sales figures > PR marketing "total number of unique players" bullshit.

But I suspect you know this, you just refuse to admit it.
SoT hasn't sold 10 million copies.
Never will.

Not my kind of game, in fact i have never even played it, but the gamehas been a massive hit, anyway you twist it. It has around 6mil sales on Steam alone (or even more as it hit 5mil like a year ago and it never leaves the top 50).
And you cant use the Gamepass excuse to downplay it as why dont like 90% of the games on Gamepass have 30mil playrs?, or 20mil?, hell 5mil players.

That's an average of 16,438 players per day. Tho since we know it hit 25 million back in October, that's 5 million between then and now, or an average of 28,901 players per day. On Steam it's roughly 13,000 per day on average so a little over 15,000 per day on Xbox platforms are playing alongside them.

WhErEs BaNjO, Ms RuInED RaRe!!! Even if I don't play Sea of Thieves, its an amazing multiplayer game. Look at Ubisoft, they were going to make a pirate game but are nowhere close to finish it. They sure as hell can't top this one.

Probably not the best idea right now to tease folks upset over no Banjo-Kazooie news when just the day before "insiders" were hyping up a new Banjo-Kazooie game at the showcase 😕

This seems made up. I need some recipes for that sir. I heard alot of didn't meet expectations talk, not how many people enjoyed the game so it must have more sales farce your weaving. The sales thread should be fertile ground to find a hint of it. Hate for you post to be completely disingenuous.

I'm not doing your reading for you, mate. If you're "concerned" enough to post this type of poor man's rhetoric, go read every TLOUII sales thread created since its release date again from page one.

Spare me the not doing the reading for you routine. I was in there,10 mil, I was there damn near at conception. So instead of dodging with the "concern" deflect, man up and give an example. If this is "I saw somebody say something that coulda been what I said they said." Fall back

There's more than one thread with many examples. It's not anyone's job to convince you of anything - you're on an internet forum with a search function: "man up" and learn to read.

Atleast 5 - 9 million on Steam.
Probably somewhere there across Xbox One, Xbox Series and Microsoft Store.
So I wouldnt be shocked if the sales figure is 10+ million.
But why does that actually matter?
Microsoft is looking to keep people paying for Gamepass so if 20 million lets assume for reasons unknown are all GP players then MS can call the game a success for keeping people on the service.

I really dont get why people cant understand that people like Sea of Thieves?
Its been in the Top 50 most played consistently basically since launch.
Jesus its still top 50 after all these years.
Microsoft taking a chance on this game is really paying off.
If Infinite wants to have the same legs they gotta get their season in order.
But I suspect you know this, you just refuse to admit it.

Sea of Thieves peaked at 9 million on Steam.
So atleast 9 million people bought it even if we say 1 million people then asked for a refund.....another 2 million across Xbox One, Xbox Series and Microsoft Store isnt far fetched.

It’s kind of impressive considering the game is too hard and not hyper enough for kids. On my voyages across the seas I only encountered grown ups. Speaking of people killing on sight, the last time I played it a few weeks ago: my friends just logged off, I was standing on the shore and a ship approached. A guy told me he is not going to kill me and just gave me shitloads of chests. I’m lucky, I guess.

The numbers keep growing proportionally to posts downplaying it xD In a year or ywo we will read how the game's userbase is 50M and some clowns will still be like "but it's on GP so it doesn't count!" or "it doesn't how many played it but how much ot sold!". Like it or not, SoT is a huge success.

I personally wish the game had a non-PvP option, something like Creative Mode in Minecraft or Fortnite, to just enjoy the world and game mechanics.

Everyone ignore concurrent player numbers and how GamePass muddies statistics like "total players".

BTW, did that song at the XBox show suggest the game is winding down today?
Are game pass fake players?

I'm pretty sure the statement is 30 million players, and not sold.

Either way, I don't really care since I don't have any Microsoft stocks.

I like how much this game creates a generation gap between gen z and geriatric millennials who demand theme park mmo progression.

Forgetting about Game Pass, Rare confirmed 5 million copies sold on Steam when the lifetime player count was 25 million players.

The user reviews on Steam are overwhelmingly positive.

Did the game launch in a sorry state? Yes. Is the game today hugely successful and popular? Yes.

LOL @ bullshit PR numbers, 30 Million might have TRIED the game, but not active users...

I played the game and enjoyed it a lot with my friends, but I haven't played it again in almost 2 years..
Good thing they’re not saying it’s active players then.

Back in October it was at 25M so that’s 5M new players at least trying it over that period or 21K / day on average. Not bad for a game people say is dead.

More like a gap between people with friends and people with a… less sufferable personality.

From what I know there is zero player progression in this game. I fail to see any worth in it.
