Xcloud is coming to Samsung TVs (June 30th)

This is a great idea but streaming games through xcloud isn’t the smoothest experience right now.

Can’t imagine causals will want to game that way because of the lag. Just imagine playing games like Fortnite or Halo infinite through streaming.
A lot of casual fans dont give a shit about the latest games or specs. All they want to do is play some games for cheap.

A few years ago before covid, I was at lunch with a buddy and he wanted to check out a game shop nearby to find old cheap 360 games for his kids. He found copies of Gears and NHL (I forget which ones, but I think NHL 11 or 12) for $10 each. He literally bought an NHL game that came out about 8 years prior.

2022 TV's only? Don't work too hard MS/Samsung. At least it says they are working with other TV partners. But why not for Roku/Firetv/Android TV then?

Fat Frog

I advertised for Google Stadia
"2022 TV's only?"

It takes more time Samsung (Stadia and GFN work with 2021 LG TVs)
For the older TVs, Microsoft will produce a Xcloud stick...

Have you tried xcloud recently? I stream xcloud on my series x, series s, tablet and smart phone and i cant even tell the difference between it and native games from the ps3/xbox 360 era and below the same goes for psnow. Modern games play fine too but the resolution sucks. This is on local wifi though, cellular is more hit and miss.

No chance ms signed an exclusive deal with Samsung, right? No way they'd do that...

But I'm not confident Sony would allow it on their tvs. Oh well at least I have an lg in my bedroom

You took the wrong message from at least 2 of those 3 quotes lol

No shit, but if you have 200 mbit/s downstream from your ISP and 3 people are downloading shit at the same time you're going to have a bad time.
Lol.

You could have 10mbs download with a 10ms ping. Or 1gbs fibre and a 100ms ping and your 10mbs connection will give you a better experience

No, they signed a partnership. Likely to fast track the Xbox app on their TVs.

I guess Samsung is paying for this exclusivity? Seems silly to limit the options unless MS is trying to control how many people connect. I've been negative on Xcloud but it's improved and can be very convenient sometimes.
Unlikely. Microsoft is probably paying Samsung if anything. Microsoft (probably) simply prioritized the Tizen version over the WebOS (LG) and AndroidTV (Samsung) versions. Roku and Apple versions seem extremely unlikely in my opinion.

Yet, new consoles sell like crazy. And that completely disproves the idea that mainstream, casual gamers dont care about new games or new tech.

Guess what, ppl want PS5 and XboxSeriesX. If your anectdote was representative this wouldnt be true. Ppl would stick to old consoles. They dont.

And I dont see ppl settling for janky streaming experiences, en masse. Ppl keep saying there is gonna be a streaming game revolution and it keeps not happening.

The impact of this will be insignificant over the next few years and beyond.

Anyone seriously interested in gaming will already have dedicated hardware, and accept that amount of lag you get with cloud gaming.

LOL at Samsung, 1 year will pass and they will stop updating their tv OS unless it is to put more ads, and good luck finding native apps that still works. I am still using my 2017 Samsung tv so yeah...I am talking by experience. But sure let's hype this partnership as it is mind blowing. My prediction 1 year will pass then MS will abandon Samsung.

Samsung already works with Stadia, GFN.

Google has partnership with TCL, LG, Hisense, Samsung (with most of the famous brands) and has already 200 million devices compatible with Stadia via android tv, google tv...

Gamespot is right. Xcloud deal with Samsung is big deal but Google's TV partnerships are BIGGER 😆. (For now)

Yes I'm sure there is more to it, strange though as the Google TV app should be fairly simple, I could probably side load the Android app it on my TV or Shield.

That's true even for people who live nearby a data centre.
I live about 50 miles from one, and a game the speed of Halo Infinite plays just fine over a run-of-the-mill cable connection.

Wouldn't play Doom, fighters, or intricate platformers on it, but Xcloud works just fine for everything else for me.

I am sure they will care about lag, no one likes piss poor experiences.

Ah, yes, the famous law that prevents companies for building more server farms in heavily populated areas.

Why would MS pay Samsung?

I don't think any money transferred hands here and its just an extension or a part of the MS + Samsung partnership announced last year or the year before.

I think it's more to do with just ensuring decent server capacity.

Exactly, many people on the globe are a whole gen behind, even now there are people who just got themselves a PS4, I mean, all those PS5 owners are selling their PS4s, someone's buying them, so there's potentially a huge userbase that will just now start their adventure with PS4 and its library. It's not like Sony will be getting a single penny out of them, but still, that just shows there's a huge potential crowd that can be reached if only the price point is low enough, and streaming/monthly fees might be exactly that, as all those people already have a TV set.

Why would they abandon Samsung? They have the most market share in the market. Xbox Cloud Gaming on Samsung TVs isn't controlled by Samsung.

Doesn't explain much so let's leave it there unless you have some similar examples which can be proven/shown.
I think Samsung’s plan is to put as many services as possible in their own Gaming Hub app and then shove a ton of ads in users’ faces. That’s why they create their own apps for everything.

They payed Nokia $250.000.000 per quarter to start using Windows Phone.
I have more but I think this is one that is one of the biggest publicly known.

Not sure that's a similar scenario (different number of players and strengths) but okay. MS's position in mobile phone was basically non-existent before the Nokia deal.

Yeah. There is money in CTV advertising. I do wonder if at some point, they would ask for a rev split but doubt it.

I’m quite sure there will at least be a way for platforms to promote their games on the service:
Using "AI Gaming technology," it will create curated recommendations on the home screen based on a person's gaming habits as well. It's unclear exactly how this will work.
AI = campaigns by platform holders to push games.

MSFT was also paying devs very generously to port games and apps to Windows Phone.
But I don't think you can find info on the numbers publicly.

There are also other generous deals for platforms they tried to make popular like Ninja ($30M?), Shroud...etc for Mixer.

I do not touch TV OS with a stick, it’s terribly designed bloatware. Wake me up when I can download XCloud on my Apple TV.

Again very different scenarios.

They were always fighting a big player or two in those examples because they got/bought in too late.

This is still a relatively nascent space and with weaker platform holders.

Like I said Samsung does not update their OS for tvs, The apps get abandoned really fast because of it...

Consoles are going the way of the dodo.

I think it's going to be casuals playing in the cloud and hardcore playing on PCs. Maybe Nintendo consoles could survive in mid range.
