The Last Of Us Part 2 has sold over 10 million units earlier this year according to Neil Druckmann | Factions 2 is now a standalone multiplayer game

So ironically a live service survival game inspired by The Last of Us has inspired ND to make a live service survival game. Good times.

I guess putting a story on this and remaking Part I is Sony’s attempt at saving the franchise from the damage Part II made.

Been looking forward to Factions 2 since forever, the first one is my most played MP ever. I hope we can see something soon.

While 10 million isn't a bad number but I think Sony expected more from a highly anticipated flagship. Guess leaks and controversial plot has done it's job.

People keep saying this without actually looking at the facts. lol

The remake was in development years ago. Do you really think they started development in 2020? :messenger_grinning_smiling:

I mean, 10 million itself is an excellent number(it IS a big number) but it certainly feels like, considering Sony's expectations and how the price of the game PLUMMETED only 6 months after the game's release, that it certainly failed to meet expectations.

Hopefully Sony sees this and takes a hard look at what they did wrong with TLOU 2. Because I would bet at least half of those 10 million units were sold at launch, when nobody knew how trash the game was.
The game hit 10M earlier this year....not like it was today. This is much faster than the first game lol

So how long has factions been on development? Like 6 years or 7 years?

Amazing sales for part 2 it will fly with even more once this all comes to pc.
2 years according to druckmann which is weird because a year before TLOU2 came out, they announced that it will be single player only and that their team was working on a standalone factions game. So it should be 3 years now.

Sony Bend had also begun helping the MP team after shipping their game in April of 2019 so not sure what Neil is talking about. It's definitely been more than 2 years since the first announcement.

Based on the gameplay in The Last of Us 2 I see Factions being big. How big do I think it can be? I think it can threaten Fortnite, Apex and Warzone kind of big if it's done right. Last of Us 2 has an excellent gameplay loop. But it comes down to the execution, which I suspect will be high quality.

Nice to finally get a sales update for TLoU: Part II, and just like was hypothesized they waited for some new TLoU announcement to give the update.

It sucks that they still didn’t have any sort of trailer for Factions 2 though. A picture doesn’t really cut it at this point.

The Growing Future of The Last of Us

Rochelle Snyder Sr. Manager Communications, Naughty Dog
Whether you’re here following our Summer Games Fest announcements or just catching up on the latest news from the studio, we’re excited to share what’s in store for the future of The Last of Us. Many of you have expressed how strongly The Last of Us series resonates with you, and we’re humbled by the community’s outpouring of passion and excitement towards the series’ growing and evolving world and characters.
We’re happy to share that The Last of Us Part II has sold through more than 10 million copies globally, as of this Spring. Knowing the support we have, our studio continues to see exciting, new avenues to introduce curious audiences and galvanize fans. With those opportunities in mind, let’s talk about the immense future of The Last of Us.

Standalone Multiplayer

cb80540cad0a500d9c223d0aeb5769827bdcbd72-scaled.jpg

It’s no secret that many of you are not only drawn to The Last of Us’ stories but also the game’s original Factions multiplayer. Since The Last of Us Factions’ release almost a decade ago, dedicated players have been vocal about an expansion upon that offering.
However, we can finally announce that we’re creating something much larger than a mode. We’re thrilled to share a piece of concept art from our upcoming multiplayer experience, which is an extremely ambitious undertaking. We’re growing our studio significantly to ensure we build this full-scale, standalone game, with its massive scope and immense world, in a way that fans have come to expect from The Last of Us and Naughty Dog.
We aim to make our newest entry into multiplayer inviting to new players while still a thrilling challenge for more of our seasoned fans. There will be more news to come next year, and we cannot wait to introduce you to the team behind this new experience!

The Last of Us on HBO

From the onset, our original vision for The Last of Us’ story was cinematic and character driven, and HBO enthusiastically continued the spirit of that same vision to bring this story to TV screens worldwide. Helmed by Craig Mazin, Creator and Writer of Chernobyl, in tandem with Executive Producer Carolyn Strauss and Neil Druckmann, the incredible cast and crew strove to ensure a faithful retelling of the story and its intricately detailed world.
In the spirit of collaboration and authenticity, Neil has taken on the roles of Executive Producer and Writer and also directed a full episode. Bringing The Last of Us to life has been a deeply creative collaboration between our studio and HBO.
The worlds of video games and television continue to overlap as Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker, Ellie and Joel’s in-game actors respectively, join the cast in major roles. We cannot wait to see them on-screen along with new and longtime fans of The Last of Us.

The Last of Us Part I

The Last of Us released almost a decade ago on the PlayStation 3 console, and it’s left an indelible mark on our studio. Joel and Ellie’s story continues to be powerfully evocative with players worldwide, and we’re humbled these characters continue to leave an impression.
With leaps in technology and hardware that allow us to push the limits of the visual fidelity and interactivity, we’re thrilled to announce this complete remake of The Last of Us, releasing September 2, 2022 for the PlayStation 5 console and in development for PC.
The Growing Future of The Last of Us

We’ve implemented modernized gameplay, improved controls, and expanded accessibility options in this single-player experience to allow even more individuals to enjoy the game. Effects, exploration, and combat have all been enhanced. Leveraging the PS5’s powerful hardware, we also implemented 3D Audio*, haptics, and adaptive triggers. Both returning fans and new players alike will have the opportunity to experience both The Last of Us Part I and its prequel story Left Behind in a whole new way.
For this rebuild, Neil has passed the directorial baton to Game Director Matthew Gallant and Creative Director Shaun Escayg to bring this project to life. Matthew joined our studio a decade ago to work on The Last of Us and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. He rose to Lead Systems Designer on The Last of Us Part II and co-headed the charge for over 60 accessibility features. Shaun started as Lead Cinematic Animator on The Last of Us and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. Shaun would later go on to become the Creative Director of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. With their deep creative and technical expertise with the series, they’re the perfect fit to helm this project, and you’ll be hearing even more about The Last of Us Part I from them soon.

Along with the trailer, we’re also pleased to announce that you may pre-order The Last of Us Part I for PS5 today at 4PM PT**. We partnered with PlayStation to develop multiple editions of the game:

God of War 2018 did those numbers in half the time. And it was coming from a series that was dormant and the last game didnt do too hot. It for sure didnt do the numbers they were hoping for. This is very likely the game with the highest budget of all sony 1st party games. All the rest dont actually have that big of a budget actually compared to top 3rd party games, but this one was in the higher echelon with regards to budget. So im sure they would have liked more. Plus, sony games crater so fast in price that these empty figures dont really have much meaning these days if 80% of the copies after the first 3 months are sold at 10 bucks

Ghost of Tsushima sold less and got a DLC, a native PS5 version rather than a patch and a free multiplayer...

IDK why people think this is a good thing if they don't reveal the cost of making this game with I believe is probably the most expensive game production to date.

Congrats I guess.

im refering to the last of us 2 expectations. My phrasing there is a bit off, it might seem im talking about god of war. No, im refering to the last of us 2. If a risky project from a dormant franchise does 10 million in a year, then the most expensive project in sony's history, last of us 2, coming from the critically aclaimed naughty dog and last of us prequel, surelly was expected to do better than god of war, or at least match it, no ?

How many of those sales were full priced, especially versus the first game? The game did 4 million in the first 3 days of sale, so how was the rest of the sales spread? If the game did 7 million in the first month, but "just" 3 million in the following years, every month doing worse, it wouldn't be what most consider good legs. And how much, considering double the lenght and insane graphical fidelity(and awesome controls) the second has compared to the first, more did TLOU 2 cost? Because if the game cost 300 million to make and market(random guess) but only made 400 million so far(10 million x 40 dollar) I doubt Sony considers that a success. And probably the reason why factions was not given for "free" and instead was reworked into a standalone game.

There is a myriad of variables

How do you know what numbers they were hoping for? It sold better than the first game in the same time period. I don't know what the fact that God of War was more popular proves? The game was fantastic, had great reviews, won more GOTY than any other that year.

It was 30-20 after 6 months.

The same as God of War.
Really?GOW 4 really did drop that low in price that fast?I could swear it dropped to "only" 40-50 dollars within the first 6 months.

Well regardless, my point still stands, as I have explained in a previous post.

10 million is nuts. Cant believe people were trying to downplay the sales of this game after it sold 4 million in three days.

I cant believe they still arent ready to show off Factions. It's pretty shocking really. Revealing games with concept art is something else.

Neil said on stage that they've been working on this for 2 years. Sounds like they didn't start until TLOU2 wrapped up. In hindsight it makes sense to me that they didn't rush to offer a free multiplayer mode that they promised. Now that the scope is bigger they can put real talent behind it and charge full price and/or lean heavily into microtransactions. If we aren't getting any more news till next year this game is a ways out.

I am betting it's either going to have multiple modes ranging from co-op, to competitive, and even BR to appeal to as many audiences as possible. Either that or try to do a massive PVPVE type mode with story to appeal to the more single player story driven crowd.

10 million in 1 year (and a month~ in change).

The Last of Us Part II didn't have the luxury of being bundled like God of War.

The game is success.

Oh look a sales number update for TLOU2 when they had something to say about the franchise. It's almost like I said this is exactly when we would get it over and over in threads on this place. But no the morons on here kept saying the game stopped selling after that initial 4 million even though sales charts month after month said otherwise. Good riddance to those ignorant haters.
