Side effect of games being added to both Xbox/PC Game Pass - if you own the game, you get a PlayAnywhere copy

This has been happening for nearly a year now, but when MS adds a game to both PC and Xbox Game Pass, if the game is via the Xbox app on PC (not UPlay like R6 Extraction or EA Play's app) most of them are converted over to PlayAnywhere. Meaning that even if you don't subscribe to Game Pass, you get a free PC (or Xbox if you owned it on the MS store) copy of the game.

Just looking at my library on the Xbox app the some of the games made into PlayAnywhere due to Game Pass have been:

Avengers
Guardians of the Galaxy
Life is Strange: True Colors
Mortal Shell
Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection
Yakuza: Like a Dragon
Zombie Army 4

Again, you don't have to sub to Game Pass to benefit from this. If you own the game on Xbox and it's added to PC Game Pass you'll get a PC copy through PlayAnywhere.

But yes generally whenever you see a new to Gamepass announcement if the announcement has PC + Console strong chance if not guarantee the game is a PlayAnywhere title.

Forza 7, resident evil 7, and killer instinct are play anywhere. If you own the Xbox version, you get the pc Microsoft store version free. Same as cuphead too

So do you like end up owning these after playing them on console or is it still behind a paywall if you have Gamepass?

You are not going to "end up owning" the game. You have to already own it, if that is what you are asking.

It typically works like this but there has been 1/2 outliers that has a different PC sku. Think Death's Door was one such example.

1. Game comes out on Xbox console + Steam, user X buys the game on Xbox
2. Game hits PC + Console Gamepass
3. user X has access to PC version via the MS irrelevant of Gamepass status on PC (aka whether or not they have PC Gamepass or Gamepass Ultimate)

Just to clarify, purchasing the Steam version isn't going to give you the Play Anywhere version, right?

Weird, I had edited the post 7 minutes to clarify that you had to buy on the xbox console.

Guess you started the quote before that.

Yeah, you have to buy it on xbox console, more specifically the MS store.
