Sony: "Acquisition of Bungie Represents a Major Step Forward in Becoming More Multiplatform"

I wonder if the MLB games coming to Xbox and then Switch has turned heads inside the company, seeing that sort of engagement and opportunity is bound to make them realise what sort of revenue increases this could bring.

Sony is literally telling you that they are going multiplatform. They are telling you that there are going to be no more AAA exclusives from PS Studios.

But they are referring to legacy PS4 titles finally coming to PC. There is nothing here to suggest they would limit PS first party developer ambitions while making games for PS console from a tech standpoint. Isn't that your/our concern or am I missing something?

Sony studios has no manpower to go multiplat. Even the Uncharted port is taking them ages to release and its one of the biggest Sony studios. And even if the use other studios to do it. Not happening

I think "more" is important here. It signifies they are branching out, not that every game they develop going forward will be for all platforms a la Epic Games, as you have interpreted.

Those two things are separate. Bungie's acquisition represents a major step forward in becoming more multiplatform. The PS games coming to PC is something additional he briefly touched on. This is mostly about how they view the Bungie acquisition and why they want to go multiplatform in the future.

Speaking as part of a corporate strategy meeting, Sony bigwig Kenichiro Yoshida has hinted that the company’s acquisition of Bungie represents a “major step forward in becoming more multiplatform”. As previously announced, the Destiny developer will retain its independence adjacent to PlayStation Studios, meaning that its games will continue to launch on all viable platforms – including Xbox, PC, and mobile.
Yoshida also touched briefly on PlayStation’s emerging PC business, explaining that the company aims to “provide access to our games to as many users as possible” and it’ll be “rolling out” more PlayStation Studios titles onto storefronts like Steam and the Epic Games Store in the future. Releases like God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn have already proven incredibly successful on PC, and Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection is the next project confirmed to be making the transition.

I've already come to terms with PS games going to PC. It is what it is. I have a badass PC I will be fine. I believe it will hurt their business but im not a stock holder so whatever. What I care about is PS division spending $3.5 billion on multiplatform acquisitions when they could be spending that money to bolster their first party which is taking upwards of 5 years to release straight last gen sequels. It does not benefit me whatsoever and it seems they will continue to make these acquisitions going forward.

Not really, just shows the mindset Sony is in when it comes to acquisitions.

They acquired Bungie for the $ that they did because they care about the technical prowess of the studio and want to work close with them to improve their existing and upcoming studios - not horde a bunch of garbage for the sake of playing generational catch-up.
You forgot the 💨GaaS.💨 aspect of bungie.

If any of the next 💨GaaS💨 from Sony comes out fucked up in any shape, way or form...Sony got scammed.

Sony and MS both badly want the next Fortnite/Apex Legends. This is the real push behind multi platform, not selling a couple more million copies of GoW:R.

Come on now, that is absurd. We will not see games like Unchartered or The Last of US on Xbox. The statement says Sony want to be more multiplatform not completely and only multiplatform.

I love Destiny (over 1k hours played in D2, bought every season pass/expansion as well as multiple cosmetics) so I was actually quite excited to see what more funding could mean for the future of both potentially Destiny and future projects for Bungie, but yesterday after they issued a statement concerning a certain issue and my following comment on said issue I was banned from all their social media platforms so they can go eat a dick. I can handle companies dipping their toes in the water of social issues but Bungie has straight up done a cannonball in the pool and started doing targeted harassment of those who oppose their views.

Cheeks Spread for Digital Only Future
They made more profits in 2020 from their PS division in 2020 than they did in the entire PS2 era while releasing an expensive console that was sold for a loss.

Their profits are already higher than they have ever been. They make more money from royalties, PS+ subs, Digital sales than they ever have in the past. 46 mllion paid PS+ subs. They didnt need to go multiplatform. This is just greed.
Look at what you wrote. The one thing that is losing money is the hardware. Why force people to buy your loss leading hardware when they already have their own. Sell them the subs, sell them the games.

I put a lot of this blame on Microsoft/Freemium/Mobile for the huge shifts happening in consolidation, but with Netease/Tenecent it's inevitable.

It just sucks that Sony is forced to be this aggressive, when they were still trajectory wise growing teams/studios regardless.

And when I say blame I mean Microsoft is shit at managing talent. Since they didn't grow during Xbox one era to increase teams, make them better when projects failed, they rested on the same shit. So they had no other choice either to spin off xbox or spend insane amounts of money to invest in buying whole publishers like Bethesda.

I understand Bethesda wanted to be acquired. But this consolidation still blows.

Freemium/mobile more than Microsoft has ruined the space in my opinion.

Everyone laughed at Xbox when they made it known this was the direction they were heading in like six years ago.

Now Jim Ryan is just copying Phil's homework.
As I said a while ago. The call between Phil and Jim after the Activision announcement was probably very interesting.

Im sure online games and maybe remakes/remaster will be day 1. But I doubt a new game like Spiderman 2, or God of War Ragnarok will be day 1.
They make better money from double dippers.
Pretty sure they would make much more money with day one one ports, because they could price them higher and profit from the console marketing.

No they will not. Their first party sales are a tiny part of their overall revenue. They make maybe 2-3 first party games a year and sell 5 million a year for each. Thats max $1 billion in revenue out of the total $25 billion in revenue they make from their playstation division. Their main source of revenue is those 46 million PS+ subs spending $60 a year. It is the 30% cut from all digital sales from the PSN store. It is the 10% royalties from the hundreds of millions of third party games they sell ever year. It's about keeping their players in their eco system

The moment they go multiplatform, they give everyone the incentive to go to someone else's eco system and they lose their biggest moneymakers.
I disagree and I'm sure their team of financials have run through the numbers. They would not be doing this if it wasn't going to be profitable. You have no idea how many people they would lose just because their exclusives show up on PC. PC gamers are larger than PS gamers. We'll see how it all unfolds.

Why would people on xbox buy PS+ subs? Why would Xbox give Sony a 30% cut on all digital sales?

You need to sell hardware. Sony is in the hardware console business and they are pretending they are a third party publisher when they barely publish 2-3 games a year. It's delusional.

PS gets CoD games; Xbox gets Bungie games.

BGS games and all XGS remain exclusive to Xbox/PC and Sony Studios games remain exclusive to PlayStation and possibly PC.
the future is uncertain , after all it is just business
and todd howard is not phil spencers bitch , i am sure he will be interested in some multiplatform franchises in the future .

Problem is this:

Microsoft CEO was saying Xbox recently gained market share vs PlayStation.

With no exclusives.

Every Xbox game is PC day 1. Yet the system sells. The buyers don’t care.

So, telling Jimbo why true exclusives matter would be a hard sell.
So MS wins market share in one quarter even though they ahve been shipping day one PC games for close to five years is evidence enough for Jimbo? or myabe it was because Series S was the most widely available console this holiday season and has reportedly outsold the playstation in the last few months? Meaning more consumers on consoles = more revenue. Which again points to just how important it is to sell consoles in order to keep players in your eco systme.

Why is Jimbo not looking at the last 10 years of Sony first party exclusives helping them gain enough goodwill to take Sony from third place to first place in a matter of a gen? A gen where they won 4 GOTY awards in 7 years and were runner up in the other two years. How is that not evidence that exclusives matter?

I think the fact that MS has been shipping games on PC for 5 years and are still in third place or rather were until the last quarter until they finally sold some series s consoles should be a good indicator of why consoles are more important than PC. They wouldnt have released a cheaper console if they thought porting games to PC was enough.

As long as it makes more money for the best gaming company in the world then gamers win.
Making more money isn't my problem with their direction. It's the potential alienation of its own platforms and then ultimately Sony going 🤷🏿‍♂️ why make anymore Playstation's after software/console sales on their systems start to slide as a result in this kumbaya (multiplatform) strategy.
