EA and FIFA officially end their partnership

FIFA will regret this. EA with these football games make the best sports game in the business. To hell with the haters. Nothing else comes close.
As much as it hurts me to say it, you are correct. Even if I think that it's not worth paying full price for every year.

No leagues will be lost. the licence is just the name fifa and the fifa competitions. So they can’t have Fifa World Cup but they’ll probably have a world championship instead
Then that is relieve. I don't want another piamanto Calcio.

That's just because there aren't any others because ea had the monopoly

Okay, I'll accept that as a possibility. Now let's see what others do, but they have a lot of catching up to do. I think people haven't been putting enough respect on just what EA has accomplished with these games simply because each new game isn't this massive overhaul.

The FIFA name will instantly give any competing game huge exposure. Competition is good.

the licence shouldnt be exclusive, at the time when pes was a better game than FIFA we had to deal with fake names where fifa had all the license and was garbage. one might argue thats the only thing that kept fifa afloat
The FIFA license does NOT include player or team names. Those are licensed separately and EA still has most of them

It will be interesting to see how this turns out.
Is there anyone in the market that can make a good Football game and has the money to pay FIFA their $2 billion or whatever it is they want? Or will FIFA aim to diversify their partnerships and work with a bunch of different companies with smaller agreements (that combined make more than what they got from EA? Like FIFA for console, FIFA for mobile from someelse, FIFA Football Manger with someone else, etc.

People don’t give a shit, they want to play as Ronaldo. Which is what they won’t do with EA.

The Fifa license allowed EA to use the FIFA name and use official FIFA events like the world cup.
The FIFA license doesn't give you the rights of players and teams. or most leagues/cups/tournaments aside from the world cup.

Messi you mean? Sounds to me like they have Ronaldo covered with English Premier League? No way Messi isn't in EA's next game. That will be worked out for certain if it isn't already.

Wank name. Wank game.

eFootball, despite its horrific launch, is still superior to FIFA now that it has been patched.

FIFA are now in a bad place because Konami and Sony won’t pay as much as EA and whilst MS might, they have no sports game development team. Greedy cunts.

FIFA is an alright game, but very, very far from real football.

The lack of improvements in physhics, animations, stadiums and overall realism is very disappointing. There's still no 90 min match mode after all these years, no real match dynamics, career mode is basic...

Football Manager, with all its flaws, is still the best football game in the market.

Going by my old panini sticker albums, all qualifying national squads are part of the Fifa license, and possibly the world club championship club teams too.

The main difference is that the clubs can be licensed by anyone - AFAIK - without exclusivity, unlike the name of football "FIFA" where there was only ever one game that could use the name.

Codemaster's Club Football already did EA Sports FC's licensing model and failed to even do a fraction of PES numbers, so will be interesting to see if the market has changed since back then.

EA's marketing department clearly don't support the move because the name being three parts is a major fail

Not entirelyaccurate, some players a tied to the fifa deal. Recently there was a debacle I think ibramovich was involved regarding ea using I'd likeness and stuff like that without his consent, the deal was done fifa. Because they have some exclusive rights

I think the deal was EA would pay FIFA $1 billion every 4 years. So $250M per year. Crazy just for the word FIFA.

FIFA sells about 20+ Million copies per year. So for every gamer who bought a copy, $10 or so went to FIFA.

Sounds like EA got hosed for years. It’s not like they got any competition for soccer games as PES has been junk for a long time. I bet they could had licensed the name for a fraction of the price and would still get the name. It’s not like Konami is going to pay anywhere close to $250M per year to call it FIFA PES.
If I get a chance in the next week I'll upload a ten minute match of me playing with my no-hopers ManU Master league team to show you otherwise - it is a footy simulator.

I 've been playing footy games since Footballer of the Year on the C64 and MotD on speccy and took a break from them for the last 5-7years (PES 2016 & Fifa on switch was my last outings IIRC), I've only just gone back and bought PES 2021 update and the depth of the game is even better again. If you really think the game is inferior I'd love to see comparative footage of you playing both games.

It is such a shame Konami have thrown out the baby with the bathwater with that inferior 2022 efootball nonsense.

Players are covered by a FIFPRO (player union) licence - which EA extended last year.

I'd wager that leagues and clubs are licenced by the respective leagues.

Championship Manager is a good example of how name doesn't mean everything. It was the football management game until it had a wobble, Eidos told the dev to go fuck themselves but then redeemed themselves with Football Manager which became the football management game as Championship Manager was left to rot.

They're gonna make a deal with Microsoft.

They're recycled garbage with some of the worst mtx in gaming.

I wonder if FIFA games cost so little actually develop cos it's the same shit all the time and the main cost is on the licencing and player advertising.

I'm hoping for a complete disaster that will somehow result in EA losing their NFL license as well.

The new name is putrid, seems like EA put as much effort in it as they put in their games.

Judging by responses, if Microsoft actually picked up the license, in my opinion it would make sense that they would change it to a live service model (with team updates etc)

To be honest I might be talking out of my arse but EA has got to of made a fortune from FUT points, that's all the lads from work say, that their kids want to buy them with spends.

So wait, next fifa is gonna have made up names and teams like older pes titles?

EA defensively acquired a lot of teams and leagues licenses on their own, but some will be either missing or replaced with pes style placeholders.

edit: I'm wrong, see O Ozriel below for a more accurate answer.

So the fifa license is just for some unimportant leagues?
What is EA losing exactly with this separation other than that?

This is incorrect. EA will have the same number of licenses and player names they've had in the past. FIFA licence covers just the name and the World Cup.

The FIFA name will instantly give any competing game huge exposure. Competition is good.

By the time any new FIFA name comes out, every current FIFA customer would have moved on to EA Sports FC.

For non fifa players, this means less money for Sony and MS. Since EA would lose some userbase due to this fall out.

Would they though? Never played Fifa myself, but if a particular sports game is a part of your routine, do you care what name is on the box?

They don't get a percentage of sales. Its a name license. Just like all other sports licensing.

I've always wished that they would have gone the per unit route with the NFL games. Basically license the name for $10 a unit sale and get their money without the exclusivity. Competition helps these games innovate, otherwise you just have the yearly roster updates for the most part. Though EA did get next-gen graphics upgrades out nice and quick.

Dont like the name....but like FIFA the corporation even less.
EA FC is almost certainly still going to be selling gangbusters...I am curious how FIFA is going to salvage their videogame franchise.
They cant steal all the tech EA has put which would mean starting from the ground up servers/backend and all.
FIFA 23 could be so backwards that fans who dont know the change has happened buy it and give up on the franchise outright.

How informed are EA FIFA fans?

People are acting like normies will not just buy the thing that says FIFA on it
Tis what what I was thinking.
Assuming FIFA have found a developer the next FIFA will simply be FIFA 23, the uninitiated will think its the next iteration of their beloved franchise not knowing its basically a whole new game that just shares a name.

As I said, there aren't any others because ea was tied with fifa. It may be the only one around, but it's still shit.
Then how do you know it’s shit and others would do better if there aren’t any other around?

FIFA has been around for 20+ years, and even back in the PS1/PS2 days when there were loads of football games FIFA was one of the better ones.

This is the truth, as is the case for madden as well. The issue is the fact that paying full price for the games isn't worth it for what you get. But the games themselves are a good time, and if you only buy one every 4 years or so like you would with other games, you'll see the changes much more.

I buy them on sale or second hand a few months after release. Usually comes in half price.

Microsoft isn't picking up the license. I don't know why that would come up in this conversation.

Brand name sells games. Without fifa name, most people won't care about EA sports game.

It would cause headache to alot of people.
Plus if another company, take fifa name, people would buy that game, which would mean less sales for EAsports.

EA Sports FC……Yeah good luck selling that close to the FIFA numbers

If someone else picks up the Fifa name and can use it, then EA Sports FC is in trouble lol
