Star Trek: Strange New Worlds |OT| Seeking Them Out

STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS is based on the years Captain Christopher Pike manned the helm of the U.S.S. Enterprise. The series will feature fan favorites from season two of STAR TREK: DISCOVERY: Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, Rebecca Romijn as Number One and Ethan Peck as Science Officer Spock. The series will follow Captain Pike, Science Officer Spock and Number One in the years before Captain Kirk boarded the U.S.S. Enterprise, as they explore new worlds around the galaxy.

To dig this show out of the other thread that's polluted with Picard, here's an OT.

Will keep an eye on this thread. Haven’t watched Star Trek in awhile which seems to be a good thing. This one looks good though. Will sub just for this if people say it’s good through out.

Still too much cocaine, Akiva

You've lost me with the
Cutting slow dialogue scenes into a billion 0.8 second fragments
Circle-jerking to Abramsverse and discarding exploration of new, original ideas
Insultingly too on the nose nods to TOS
Universally informal speech where grey haired captains and admirals talk colloquially like rookies
Last but not least, fanfic-tier writing.

Anything good?
I have a crush on the nurse. Good actor too, giving proper amount of energy which fits the attempted fast pace of the show. It feels like most were still rehearsing and giving 50% effort.

"Are you familiar with the United States of America, Spock?"

This isn't set in the Abramsverse. It's the Prime universe, set about 6 years before Kirk took command of the Enterprise. Meaning this is probably going to be the start of Pike's third and final five year mission. The first episode is in 2259, and Kirk took command in 2265. It's also not the Abramsverse as the first episode is set on almost the same date as Star Trek Into Darkness.

The nods to TOS are there because this is a prequel. Spock and T'Pring's divorce is shown in TOS with Amok Time.
It is funny that the blame the Maga crowd for ww3. It all started when they wanted to audit the vote.

Pretty sure they also showed antifa in those clips. The night time riot footage. And they used the BLM protests too (the No Justice No Peace sign):

OutrageTube summaries are omitting that little fact because it hurts their money-making narrative.

I think they did too. The maga stuff just cracked me up. I’m not outraged, I just thought it was funny.

The way people (here and elsewhere) where complaining about it I thought it was going to be just the MAGA protests, but they showed antifa and BLM as well, yet no one mentioned that when they were crying about the MAGA footage.

Visual style is Abramsverse. Dialogue is attempting to be Abramsverse. Whatever "canon" this might be I don't care. I understand why my comment misled.

This is still Star Trek made by people who don't understand Star Trek. The first episode was a remake of the TNG episode "First Contact" but maybe 1% of the runtime was spent talking to the aliens? We didn't even get their names. All we got was Pike preaching (ironically about diplomacy) and not listening.

This is still a soapbox show. Guys, AMERICA IS AT CIVIL WAR, we get it.

It will be ok. People just have confirmation bias so they see what they want.

Yes we did.
The president lady, what was her name? She might as well have been a cardboard cutout. She was there to be talked at, not to.

edit: Fellas, I don't think which protesting footage they chose for a half a second clip is pertinent.

This was very much enjoyable and seemed like a Star Trek episodes, with a few of the downfalls of new Trek, but none in a way that seriously hurts the episode. I was pleasently surprised.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
After watching the first episode all I can say is.... that's how you do Star Trek!
It's just a shame it's tied to the other new TV shows.

New to Star Trek I see.

I think *you* are new to Trek, or at least horribly ignorant of how the classical Trek episodes were written.

There is a difference between being a character based episodic show with strong progressive themes and blatant soapbox writing by regressives that puts characters second to the drivel they try to put out (aka, NuTrek). Admittedly I haven't seen this show yet so I will hold out hope that it actually gets things right, but if Picard and Discovery are anything to go by, there is very little hope.

It was alright. Not as good as many are making it out to be. It's got my interest enough to try another episode.

Oh there's room for improvement but without a doubt they're on the right track.
Still not sold on this version of Spock
Zachary Quinto continues to be the only actor to be able to pull it off.

When's the next episode?

Edit: Found it. Looks like Thurday drops. May 12th is episode 2.

What about Nimoy?

Nimoy is Spock
Zachary Quinto pays homage to Nimoy's Spock very well is what I mean
Ethan Peck could be any other Vulcan character, he isn't even similar to Nimoy's Spock.
Same with Karl Urban plays
Leonard McCoy superbly, if not over an exaggerated version of him.
But it works because that's what you love about McCoy

Spock is a fictional character. Nimoy is the man that played him and directed 3 men and a baby.
I didn't actually know that last bit.
But yeah, I mean Zachary Quinto plays Nimoy's Spock perfectly.
He must of studied the man
This still remains one of my favourite scenes

I am displaying multiple attitudes simultaneously....to which do you refer?

So what I gather from this thread is that if I'm not that much into Star Trek and don't mind some characters being portrayed differently this is actually pretty good?
Had completely written it off because it's in the same universe as Discovery (which was okish during the first season but quickly went to shit).

They're all in the Prime (TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT) universe. Only the JJ Abrams shit is in its own universe, which has been referenced and talked about in DISCO.

Oh I didn't know even TNG and DS9 are in the same universe as this.
I guess what I meant is from this same modern era with the same actors that appeared in Discovery

DISCO was originally set 9 years before TOS, before being warped to 900 years after TNG. Strange New Worlds is six years before TOS.

I enjoyed Episode 2. A problem that was not what it originally seemed, a species that you have to work things out with. Pretty much like old ST. I liked it.

I'll check it out when I get home. Somewhat off-topic but what else is worth watching on Paramount plus? I've heard 1883 is good.

Paramount Plus put the first episode up on youtube.

Overall I liked it and hope for the best and not get the S2 Picard treatment that started strong and then dropped.

This is because the characters are beloved not for what they do, be it scientist, doctor, or captain, but HOW they do it, the spin the actors put on otherwise pretty generic roles.

These days it's all about the trauma drama inflicted on or by the characters or the actors personal issues bleeding into the role.

1883 starts strong and by the end I think it goes way off the rails. You can read my take in the thread about it.

halo is on there. The chief is having some sex.

"You follow us and I'll kill ya!"

Episide 2 (SNW) better, same, or worse than E1?

Two shows in and I'm content and optimistic enough about the next episode but I'm not enjoying the informal banter and speaking out of turn of the lower ranks.

It's very good. More of this please. I love the pacing too. It takes time for things. Only gripe I have is that it's a bit to jokey, but I can live with that. This is the way to do a modern Star Trek. Not Discovery and certainly not Picard.

This show has a lot of promise. Much better than what I have seen from Trek in quite a while’
