Final Fantasy XVI development in “the final stretch”

FF16 producer Yoshida featured in Uniqlo's magazine this month with the release of the FF 35th anniversary T-shirts. Here's what he said near the end of the interview about 16:

Right now the development of FF16 is in its final stage. As a single player game, we are aiming to integrate story and gameplay even further. Different to a game where many people play online at the same time, the extent to which the game has an individual focus changes how immersed you are in the story. I think it's become a story with quite a lot of depth. To people who have grown up, entered working society and think "reality isn't as easy-going as a video game", and at some point ended up separating from Final Fantasy, we want to want them to remember their passion from back then. We're making the game with that intention.

Final stage of development.

Only Square Enix would give updates for one of their biggest games in Uniqlo's magazine.

If Forspoken hadn't been delayed to October I would've believed in a Fall/Holiday release. Now I think this is a Q1 2023 game. I hope I'm wrong though.
I would settle for Q1 2023 at this point. They showed a lot in the reveal and made it look like it was going to release soon but then it went dark.

Excellent. I think it will be a Q1 2023 title because of the Forspoken delay but a release late this year would be amazing.

Great news, though not completely surprising as I think it was Schreier who had reported that they were very deep into development several months back.

This could be very big exclusive for the early part of next year as others have said.

I can’t wait for this one and if it does come out this year, then even better. From the impression they gave at the last update, it seemed like things were moving on nicely, so you never know. FF16 and Starfield to complete the year would be pretty awesome.

So is this the Spring update we were promised, a blurb in fashion magazine interview?
I was hoping for new screenshots at least.

Good to hear they're close to the finish line.
Yoshida knows how to manage a production better than Nomura, that's for sure.

I have watched their gameplay trailer and didn't really like that they apparently went full action. Felt almost like DMC. But that's not what really bothered me, because the gamelay actually seems good... however, are there gonna be parties? Or just a single character in battle?

I still want to see more of the world. Give me a couple of shots of interesting towns or wilderness that I would like to explore.

One of the main ex-DMC devs is working on it as the combat designer.

Hmm, that explains a lot! I really didn't know. The combat gameplay seems good, but I hope they develop a big world interesting to explore, and hopefully that there's a party to command in battle.
DMC is obviously one of the best action series ever made, but I'm getting a little tired of it personally.

The way I look at it, for an RPG, it'll be very good combat from the looks of it. I'm not expecting a party at all, but you never know. And considering the character models literally look like FFXIV, I'm kind of expecting open areas on par with XIV, but more polished. We'll see. So much is still unknown.

Yoshi-P as the director behind ff16 gives me extremely high hopes for FF (single player entries) to get back on track of absolute greatness. They also advertised the game right...showed an early teaser and ....buckled down and got their asses to work instead of trying to overly hype the game through the years. Yoshi-P knows what he is doing and extremely cares about anything that has his name on it...he won''t let a bad product get released.

Please be excited

To be fair, as much as I used to enjoy DMC, I'm also growing tired of it's mechanics. DMC5 was a let down for me, personally.
But for an RPG, I think the combat can be pretty good since they may add some interesting level progression, so I'm more optimistic when it comes to this combat mechanic in Final Fantasy. I'm just not a fan of the lack of party members, as I think it's a great way to add a layer of strategy and complexity in most RPG games, and this was a thing in all Final Fantasy main games until now.

Anyway, it's wait and see. Right now my feelings are mixed about it and am not sure what to expect.

I believe in Yosh-P. NGL, this quote gives me chills:

If they deliver on that intention, dis gun be gud.

Final Fantasy XVI development in “the final stretch”

A short blurb by producer Naoki Yoshida from the latest issue of Uniqulo's UT magazine.

Development on Final Fantasy XVI is in “the final stretch,” producer Naoki Yoshida said in the latest issue of Uniqlo’s free in-store UT magazine, which includes an interview with Yoshida as part of the clothing company’s collaboration with Final Fantasy for the franchise’s 35th anniversary.

“Currently, development on the latest title, Final Fantasy XVI, is in the final stretch,” Yoshida said. “As a single-player game, Final Fantasy XVI aims to unify the story and gameplay experience. Unlike online games, which portrays multiple players at once, Final Fantasy XVI has an individual focus, which makes the story more immersive. And I think the story has become quite deep. My hope is that the adults who have grown up, understand the rules of society, and drifted away from Final Fantasy thinking ‘the real world isn’t as easy as a video game’ can remember the enthusiasm they had back then. That’s what we’re keeping in mind as we make this game.”

Final Fantasy XVI is in development for PlayStation 5. More information is planned to be announced this spring.

Interesting. Maybe that theme is tied into the fact that there is a time skip. The trailer shows as much. The main character grows up from a teenager to an adult. Facing the world as a teen and then as an adult are two very different things. I hope the main character has development in this respect. Very few stories in manga, anime, and JRPGs have the protagonist grow up and tackle world-saving problems along side good character development and actual in-game maturity and aging. Let's see if YoshiP and the team can nail it.
