Kind of funny, this is an "actual" next-gen game, but nobody's here to talk about it.

...Not that it's a great next-gen game, or that it couldn't necessarily be done as a cross-gen release. (It's basically a very clean and very big world, but with all of the glitches and LOD issues of an over-flocked landscape, and the grass shader just barely holds up but admirably is used in close-up view when tracking. No indication, but I would guess this is a UE4 project?) But for the people who were saying cross-gen wasn't exactly the problem with there being "no true next-gen" at launch, this is kind of an example of what people were saying, that escaping old hardware wouldn't magically make everything better and that actual next-gen technology, which was and is still under development, was what was really needed.

Still, not a bad-looking hunting game. I believe Xbox 360 or Xbox One had an early-in-gen hunting game that was surprisingly a looker, from the outside at least.

I had never heard of them, but Nine Rocks Games is a THQ Nordic studio already.
They are former Cauldron, slovakian studio with 25 year history. They made bunch of lowbudget hunting games for Activision back in the day, but now it seems they were given a decent budget to actually create hunting game they wanted.

Their first notable game (released outside czechland and slovakia) was Spellcross, a kick ass turnbased strategy.

Finally, I’ll be able to kill something on a hunt.
My irl hunting be like: sit and wait for hours, see nothing, go to store buy steak, mount steak on wall.

Oh, Cauldron! That old Activision Value studio (with a history even before then.) That makes sense, they did always punch above their weight. They made the Soldier of Fortune Payback sequel, plus Jurassic: The Hunted. (They also made a ton of Cabela's games, which were visually bold for what they were in the 360 era, although they didn't make the one I was thinking of, Cabela's Survival: Shadows of Katmai.)

I really hate these kinds of games, which mistreat animals.:messenger_expressionless:

In this game, can I hunt hunters?

Heh, there really should be a Poacher Hunter game...

Treating your original question seriously (I get why you edited it, but it's out there now,) it depends on you definition of "mistreats animals". If you're a vegan, then any interaction with animals for food is mistreatment and that's your definition and stance. If you're a meat-eater, though, weighing ethically-minded hunting against factory meat production gets hinky and produces a lot of arguments. And then there's the conversation of population control (some vermin or even fauna natural to a territory can overproduce, in part because of human interaction, and cause damage to the whole ecosystem, including their own species) and other animal intervention issues. Plus there's the situation where other animals are truly carnivorous, and they're not nearly as concerned about mistreating the animals they kill. (My cat sometimes brings birds into the house, and she's just a bitch in how she taunts them while they suffer until death, and then she doesn't even eat them, they're just a toy...)

I'm not a hunter myself, but I know several hunters and they're not in it "for the kill" and the fun of murdering an animal or the instagrams of cool animals that they took down, they're in it for the meat and the skill of a good takedown with minimal suffering to the beast. They follow hunting regulations, they take good shots (although it's for the good of the meat as much as it is respect to the prey,) and they eat or use what they bring down. My hunter friends love animals as much or maybe even more than most people I know, and they gain an understanding of the creatures and the balance of nature by inserting themselves into that area's foodchain. Sure, there are dickhead trophy hunters eager to take down lions and other wild beasts so they can say that they did before there are none left to hunt, but most hunters are there for what's needed.

...But so, can there really be a videogame about "ethical hunting", as this game claims? I'm not sure how they handle it, I've never played one (except for the Big Game Hunter arcade game, which was just "Blast 'em all!!!" nonsense.) I'm sure they reward vital shots, and maybe they have limitations of what you can take out (thus pushing players to search for better and bigger prey rather than just shooting the first deer you come across) or maybe they penalize or flag you down when you try to shoot immature animals. And some of them bump up the excitement with videogamey animal attack events, so that it's no longer a hunting game and instead is just a silly action game. So, maybe? Or maybe these are just gross exploitation of what should be a respectful activity? (I bet the kids didn't think about it when blasting cartoon ducks for your dog to fetch in NES Duck Hunt, but now the visuals and the awareness are clear of what's going on there...) But either way, pulling a trigger button and pulling a trigger on a rifle are two different things. Kind of like how armies supposedly uses FPSes to "desensitize" soldiers for action in the field (they also used games like America's Army and Full Spectrum Warrior as actual training sessions, although those were designed as combat scenario runthroughs, not just games to train you to kill baddies,) it's a different circumstance when you actually have to end a life in front of you with your own hands. But then again, if you're making a dish of "pork" or "beef" tonight, you should be aware that somebody did the bloody work for you.

So I get kinda high (quite high actually, alongside some beers fwiw) and I fire up Way of the Hunter. I’d been thinking about it all day, and long story short is I manage to get myself intensely immersed.

But what eventually happens is that due to said immersion now I’m sitting here feeling like the game is sorta bad vibes and sorta disgusting.

Hunting wild animals for sport is … idk. Like, existentially, you’ve got this modern weaponry, and you’re hunting these peaceful creatures that are just trying to live their lives. It’s kinda fucked up. Like, these aren’t combatants.

I guess it just sorta smacked me in the face a bit, like, “yeah, that’s why these games are so niche and would seem to only truly appeal to irl hunters for the most part.”

Am I being a high retard or do you know what I mean? Because the game is kinda fuckin awesome. But I legit find myself in moral objection to it. Which is just such a fucked up thing to say about a video game given the kind of shit I’ve played and had no issue with.

Ghost of Tsushima is hardly less “fucked up” as an immersive experience, for example. But again I suppose it’s that combatant factor.

Honestly what a conundrum — one of the most intensely-immersive gaming experiences I’ve had in years (not exaggerating) and yet it involves bumping into genuine moral resistance. (I also found Binding of Isaac to be reprehensible garbage for reference, but that is quite literally the only other time in my gaming life that I’ve experienced this sort of thing. I’m 45.)

Tldr: I think this game is incredible and I haven’t been as immersed as I was tonight in years. But man if this isn’t essentially some Bambi-killer shit. Weird vibes.

I dont hunt IRL and had similar vibes (also 46 yrs old so close to your age), but also the animals are all species that if they weren't controlled they would cause chaos to the environment so I feel like I'm doing a virtual good deed 🤣🤣

I prefer CoTW personally as it just nails the 'rare find' vibe but I do agree WoTH can be very immersive when I'm in the right mood for it. I often turn it on, soak in the vibes, then spook something from 300 yards and think fuck this and put CoTW back on.

The new map looks really good, have you seen the trailer? Alaska, crossbows, should be decent!

I’ll join the 40-something WotH Club, too, I guess, and echo the sentiment of it being immersive and alluring while simultaneously repulsive. I’m not high, though, so it’s not that.

I’ve never been into this sort of game, nor hunting for that matter, but started going through some personal grief late this summer, and on a whim, picked this up thinking I’d find walking in the digital forest cathartic, and to a large extent, it was. However, I absolutely suck at the game and can’t seem to track a deer, let alone kill one. Currently, I need to make a dish with a whitetail doe heart and they’re nothing but a myth at this point.

Saw the trailer for the new add-on and now I think I might try to resume the hunt since I put it down in frustration. These aren’t real animals, yet I find that I impose a lot of ethical handcuffs on myself (that are completely made-up) when playing this game and it’s made progression quite the chore.

Nitpick, if I will: where are the supplemental species at? Squirrels, birds, etc.? That would add so much to my experience (along with being able to fish). I’d also love a botany component where you could collect species of plants when not active hunting.

Ive always been curious about these games, but always wondered which one is better?
Ive also wondered why they dont have a pacifist option where you hunt and tranq the animals rather than kill them?

This is exactly my "problem" with the game, which looks awesome but I'm finding it borderline repulsive to just cruise around this lovely rendered countryside and shoot up some peaceful animals for literally no reason other than for the lulz and the trophies.

Which, again, is a dumb argument considering I shoot literally thousands of "people" in videogames but like you said, that is in an active combat situation usually. Doming a nazi in Battlefield is not the same as shooting a deer in a meadow and putting its head on the mantlepiece. I really don't want to shoot these random animals.

I dunno, it just feels weird for some reason.
