[Business Insider] Microsoft is building an ad program that will let brands advertise in Xbox games

Lol, all the Xbox posters here are completely fine with this. Shocking. And I'm sure if it was PlayStation doing this, those same guys wouldn't have ANY issues with that either.

Watch this cause legality issues ten years from now where games are pulled down because of some copyright issues pertaining to ads found in the game.
No if it was Sony you and the other blue rats would be celebrating Sonys new revenue stream.

Why would games get taken down? They could just patch out the ad.

But as it’s not Sony, we need some outrage right lol. You and clowns going around agreeing with each other don’t fool anyone

I play games to take my mind off how crappy the world is.

It’s already shitty enough that games push political agendas down our throats, but I see enough fucking ads everywhere as it is.

First off let's not act like if this was something Sony was doing this wouldn't be widely accepted by Sony fans. Fans of certain platforms accept pretty much whatever those platform owners do. Sony fans aren't rebelling against cloud saves being behind a paywall for instance despite it being free on another platform.

Secondly this tech is supposed to do dynamic ads so it is highly unlikely that there will be old ads locked into the game causing copyright issues. This isn't a big deal because it isn't a big deal. Ads are already in games and as long as the ads aren't intrusive who cares especially in F2P titles.

If only there was a way for us to see how people reacted when this was being looked at for PlayStation. Oh wait... :

These super old posts don't seem to mention anything about F2P games getting dynamic ads. Ads have been on consoles for years. Plus Sony was quite successful despite whatever ad scheme was cooked up almost 10 years ago. In the end it was accepted by the fans. This is still much ado about nothing.

Can you ever just acknowledge you were proven wrong without deflecting and moving goalposts just to keep on arguing some new point?

"Those sources said those ads would show up as, for instance, digitally rendered billboards in a car racing game."

That's the major point the programme has confirmed. I wouldn't even call that advertising - it's more product placement like Death Stranding/Quantum Break:

Compared to actual ads like this:

The real discussion here is not to score points against (brand), but to ask if the savings will be passed onto us, or what sort of nefarious brand exclusive content/quests/bonuses will this generate?

2012 and 2013 lol

Most of gaf today and the two clowns that agreed with you were probably still polluting N4G back then.

Whatever, it is not like people are saying “yeah this is great” or anything like that. You know full well what the person I replied to was insinuating and it was the typical console wars bullshit.

Pulling out 10 yr old threads which were created in an epoch were 95% of today’s fanboys would all be permabanned in a day proves fuck all

So in essence:

Friday Movie GIF

But based on those threads the one thing I can tell you hasn't changed is the persecution complex you fellas like to run. Never change guys, never change.

It already on games on gamepass ironically i can attest to this

Couple of days ago i was playing Fifa 21 on gamepass on my Series S and i saw a PlayStation ad in the Xbox version of the game on the scrolling billboard thing lol
so ads are already in full price games already
Nothing so far has ever stopped at just F2P games, once it is introduced it makes it's way up to most other games.

Holy moly no comment...

But well as long as Sony won't be inspired by this silly idea it's all good, I'm saying this cause recently Sony has been following too much into MS silly ideas, hopefully it will stop

lol that old chestnut. I would have thought that you could do better than that.

So telling someone that they are full of shit is now classed as a "persecution complex"? I need to get with the times it would seem

It's already in larger sports games.

FM has it programmatically (aka this MS move)
FIFA has it but it ain't programmatic so brands have to do direct deals with EA and buy out ad space in a broader way

I haven't played a FIFA game since the PS2, but I distinctly remember that the billboards encircling the pitch had names and logos of real companies on them... Unless I am having a personal mandella effect episode. I also remember Axe deodorant ads in Rainbow 6 vegas on the 360 too

Neither did Xbox fans when online play was behind a paywall only on Xbox, while everybody else had it for free. And now here we are... Maybe you should be worried about Xbox putting cloud saves behind a paywall, too, as they are currently the only ones offering it for free...

Savings and extra profit companies make from this sort of thing rarely get passed on to the consumer. Hell, they rarely get reinvested back into the business for future projects. It's just yet another way for executives to line their pockets at everyone else's expense. Just ask the likes of Kotick and Wilson.

The persecution complex was on show the moment it was suggested the reaction would be different if it were Sony doing this, as if these kinds of reactions for nefarious practices are reserved only for Microsoft/Xbox.

See what you want to see, makes no difference to me. The good thing about the internet is that everything is archived. From there you have a choice as to whether you want to live in your head or in reality.

lol no, and you know that so why even bother with the nonsense. If it was the other way around this thread would have played out exactly the same way but in reverse. That is not even debatable.

Doesn't really matter. F2p games are ass and I don't play them. The outrage will be fun tho

Yeah i don't know why the Playstaion ad are doing in the Xbox version of the game but it was in the background so i did not care much for it
here an example of what it looks like lol

Thats the Champions League mode for Fifa. Playstation has been one of the main sponsors of the Uefa Champions League for 10+ years now, so i guess this is due to the licensing. I have never played the mode, but i assume you also see Heineken or Mastercard ads there.

Edit: Seems like the Heineken deal expired.

Yeah but that is different though. You understand right?

No seriously, billboards in games are fine and have been a thing for years. In sports games that make it a bit more authentic. If advertising stays along those paths then it is fine. If the games are getting stopped to run an ad then that is a totally different thing.

Ok, I concede that your 10 yr old threads are the holy grail when it comes to this subject......

Listen, I am not going to run around in circles with you on this. Especially when I am 99.5% certain that you are that hardcore twitter loon JoeMiller101 lol. Goddam son...

This guy? :

Hilarious and sad in equal measure. If you think I'm some random dude from Kuwait then take it up with the mods, it's easily verifiable.

But yet again, it's an example of the fictitious world you live in.

Yeah there are a bunch of ads on the scrolling billboard thing that just how it is in every Fifa

Yeah was just pointing that out to people it don't bother me at all like i said but just find it funny that all

I hated it on the 360 so much that I moved from the 360 to the PS3 (the first Sony console I ever owned). The paywall on the 360 was the most offensive things I've ever seen in gaming, you couldn't use the browser or apps without gold and other ridiculous things like that without it. MS kept F2P games behind a paywall until last year If I'm not mistaken (something that was never behind any paywall on PlayStation) and they didn't offer any games with Gold until after PS+ started to do it.

Sony ended up convincing me to get PS+ because of the games (I had both the PS3 and Vita at the time and they were including a much better games than they are including now). It has gone down in quality so much that I might end up unsubscribing when it runs out unless the value improves (I'll have to see how the new PS+).

Not everything is about being a fan of one brand over another, somethings are just bad ideas that try to push things in a bad direction. MS clearly have this vision of consoles becoming like mobile games, that where the 2 billion gamers talk comes from, so it not like they are hiding it.

Saves behind a paywall like Sony is doing is ridiculous, there is no excuse for it, but they get away with it because we've seen much worse things being done with paywalls. It doesn't help that a lot of people don't notice it's behind a paywall because they already have PS+.

Moderated wildly
I guess Microsoft will probably be the first to encorperate something like this from the big three. They will then be scrutinised for 2 to 3 years by the hard-core fan base on the Internet while posting record profits. Then Sony and maybe Nintendo will follow suit and the conversation will shift to, well Microsoft have been doing it for three years so they are the real bad guys.

Yeah, sounds about right.

Whatever. As I said, I ain’t going to go around in circles with you on this. The attitude or condemnation of the subject in hand would have been the same if it was the other way around. We both know this. So pretend otherwise

Don't worry, I'll leave all the pretending to you.

I also love how after God knows how long you've been rambling on about this Joe person to me your reaction is now "whatever" after you finally explain what that was all about. Fiction is flimsy after all. Glad you got a kick out of that fantasy while it lasted though.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Not too differently it seems.

Kudos to Sony.
I can see thousand of suits at MS, Zynga, Apple, OnLive/Gaikai, Activision, EA and many others asking themselves how they missed this.
For the implementation itself i don't see the problem. If it's for free games, skippable after 5 secs, a la Youtube, and non climax interrupting, i don't see how is this is different from any other form of free product funding like tv, youtube, websites, spotify...

The more things change, the more they remain the same.

Captain Toad

I advertise for PlayStation. For free.

PS. You're getting worked up over something which is a/ a concept at the moment and b/ only meant to target free to play games if it ever goes through. Relax. :messenger_peace:
I don't think that has anything to do with Captain Toad because you and him are the mirror opposite representing your preferred gaming company as sales managers. If my company does the X thing is good but if the other company does the same X thing it's bad. And it's ironic to call him out when you do the exact same thing.

I don't think anything in my posts is that blatant, but if you feel like that, ok (y)

IKR, I'm sure this would all be delivered live in the first place, with a generic fallback already in place if the service was deactivated.

Hopefully this doesn't effect the humor in futuristic games, the fake ads they often use in those are typically hilarious. But a nothingburger either way for me.

Ok Joe, I don’t believe you. Anyway, imagine trying to pretend that the community now is the same as the community 10yrs ago and fantasising that that was a winning gotcha. Just looking at the reactions to our conversation is enough to dispel any myths.

But you do like talking about fiction and stuff so it’s understandable.. Quick, run back to twitter and make a post about ads

This means they will be banking on these ads so they will become much more intrusive than previous implementation.
Thanks, everyone’s favorite Phil.

There it is, surprised it took this long for someone to blame Phil for a nonexistent thing yet :messenger_tears_of_joy:
