[Business Insider] Microsoft is building an ad program that will let brands advertise in Xbox games

In game world advertising is actually a win-win situation as far as I am concerned. A billboard with a real ad, or a soda can with the coke branding rather than 'slurpo cola' is actually better for the player and provides an extra revenue stream.

I doubt any of that was dynamic.

The shareholders will demand that Gamepass eventually become profitable. They just need to get as many subscribers as they can over the next few years before the real monetizing can start.

Article says F2P. How you’re getting ‘Gamepass’ from that is truly mystifying.

Actually that makes sense… not that far fetched

Makes zero sense since their games in Gamepass are also sold at retail.

So MS does want to make money in gaming after all!

even YouTube became a non stop ads spamming thing!
If the real monetization is ads, why bother building a base of paying subscribers instead of making everything free to play? And why show ads to your paying subscribers when most services do the opposite (removing ads as a benefit for Premium)?

The only thing that barely makes sense would be putting ads on F2P games and then removing those ads for subscribers to make GP look more appealing.

Wasn't MS putting adds on the dashboard at some point? (I don't know if they stopped that) You think they are beyond selling add space inside a subscription or paid game if it they make this a thing? As long as they can get always with it they'll do it. What's even worse it that if if works on their consumer base others will copy (just like what happened with paid online and the push for mtx in the 360 days).

Time to get banned for using a mod to block adds...

TBH I dont think this is gonna be anyting serious. They will either try it and drop it because people will complain or its not gonna get in the way.
MS atm doesnt wanna rock the boat and Im sure they wont. Or its gonna be barely noticeable

There are ads on the Xbox dashboard for sales and new releases, and there are ads for PS+ and PSNow on the PS5 one. Not sure I see a big difference on that front tbh as long as it’s gaming related.

I don’t have a particular fear of MS and F2P games are paid one way or another, either ads or MTX.

Football Manager already does programmatic ads.

FIFA on console does ads via direct deals.

This has nothing to do with Gamepass but more to do with their current data set and the purchase of Xandr.

Even the most profitable company in the world deliver ads.

Just booted up steam and it is just wall to wall ads for games. Disgusting.

I disagree because Xbox games sales is more digital so it could be easier to implement to cut down prices MS has to pay to have their games on gamepass and I’ve read so many theories that one actually could make sense!

Opinions and theories on something we do not know
it is what it is.

I remember McDonalds adds an unrelated adds like that on 360, maybe I'm misremembering.

MS can’t make 3rd party games go free to play but they could make deals of “put your new game on gamepass day one, you can use ads” quite simple no? And MS would not even need to pay for those games to be there.

Programmatic ads are between the 1-5 usd per 1000 imps range for in-game advertising so it's going to be a slow burn (500k of ad revenue = 100-500m impressions)

I think this is more about maximising their purchase of Xandr and also possible any metaverse advertising that happens.

Could be but that is why MS is trying to build a big user base for Gamepass. More people there more sweet the deal would be/more revenue!

I can see them trying on their own games first!

Makes sense. MS players no longer buys games as they wait for the game to show -up on Gamepass. The producers then loses sales and real money. This way, the producer will be able to get some of those profits back

/S

Adds displayed is going to be the new metric for success instead of shots fired/hours played/distance raced.

So devs would give their games away for the privilege of MS putting adds on them? Now I've heard everything.

Imo it's going to be sports games so it's going to that new boxing game, the new football game and stuff like FIFA.

If Microsoft gets King, they will definitely replace the existing ad networks though.

I don't have problem when the real product is in the games I like it.
That's why the most popular mods in gta is real stuff. In fact it bothers me when you see something like coca cola and is writing like coque colly, I think the only game that made their made up brand awesome is the fallout series with nuke cola. But if your ad is obnoxious shit like interruption of the gameplay to show you a 20 sec out of the place ad, you can fuck off.

I personally have no issue with advertisement in video games, as long as they're not intrusive. Like don't be fucking showing me a 60 sec. commercial. Crazy Taxi style adverts, in the background is fine... but then again, this is coming from someone who used to be in advertising lol

Although, I would miss the sometimes creative bizzaro versions of real world products/brands developers create.

That's shitty. If it is set in real world, it could make sense. Like gt with all the sponsors etc

Question does ms still put ads on the dashboard? It has been awhile since I used an Xbox

i'll wait for an ad store in game so you can have the privage of buying from a range of real world ads. Some idiots will buy them.

it is what it is.

Again, you're barking up the wrong tree here.

The article specifically mentions Free to Play games, since in those ones, the customer approaches them with the knowledge that the game has to be monetized either through MTX (on console) or ads on mobile.

Putting ads in a paid, premium game will result in significant backlash that nobody wants.

Conflating F2P and Gamepass makes no sense...they're entirely different things. and that's what I meant when i was talking about the games being sold at retail. Whether or not it's digital does not really matter.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Maybe they can put an ad for "Git Gud" in between boss phases in Elden Ring.

Every time you die, the late Gilbert Gottfried roasts you for 20 seconds.

Shit man that'll make ER an infinitely more enjoyable experience.

Burnout Paradise clasically had various bill boards do dynamic ads in the games world as pictured a few posts above as well.

The practice isn't new at all.

That happened during PS3 era. PS3 was an unsustainable console. Happening again on GamePass era. Then Game Pass should be unsustainable.
Am I doing it right?
