Stranger of Paradise’s first week of sales in Japan is among the lowest of any Final Fantasy spinoff (vcg)

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is the 4th lowest selling Final Fantasy spinoff in history according to Japanese sales data.

As posted by Game Data Library, a Twitter account that tracks Japanese sales data, only Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo’s Dungeon on Wii, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers on Wii and Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales on DS have sold fewer copies in their launch week.

This data only covers retail sales and doesn’t reflect digital, or worldwide sales figures, but it’s a bad sign for the troubled spin-off. The game has sold 46,849 physical copies on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 combined in its first week.

In comparison, Elden Ring managed to sell over 1 million units in Japan in just over two weeks.

The PC port, which is currently an Epic Games Store exclusive, has been causing issues for some players, a number of whom are reporting that the game is slowing down during combat.

One player, who claims to be playing the game with an RTX 3080 graphics card and an i5-12600K processor, created a post titled “PC port is horrendous” on the game’s subreddit.

“The game is ugly as hell with awful render distance, tons of pop-in, jagged visuals, aliasing everywhere, and really blurry and washed out image,” they claimed.

“In basic one-on-one fights the game goes from full 120fps straight down to low 40s and 50s, and not only does the FPS drop but the actual gameplay speed slows down with it so it looks like you’re playing in slow motion. Strongly recommend not purchasing until there’s some fixes, I’ve never seen such a bad port.”

This isn’t the first time that a PC port of a Square Enix game has been criticised for performance issues.

The PC version of Final Fantasy VII Remake, released in December 2021, was deemed “the worst AAA release… on PC in a good long time”, according to video game tech analysis site Digital Foundry.

The smaller more linear stages makes me feel like a rat, running around in a cage. I’m going to play more of it later. It definitely doesn’t have me hooked like NiOh 1 & 2 did. It has all the makings of a good game in that genre except it doesn’t do a whole lot to mold everything together.

I don’t understand Square’s decisions. They’ve had this weird spin off stuff for years now and outside of Tactics, I’d just rather play the mainline Final Fantasy games. I went back and played Dissidia on PSP. At least that was fun for a while.

I feel like Square has lost some of that magic from their years as Squaresoft. Their retro stuff is amazing.

I really liked the first couple of stages from the demo. I think this is a niche action game and mainstream FF fans won't really like it.

I would highly suggest you look at some of their A to AA titles. This one isn’t developed by Square.
Games like Dungeon Encounters, Voice of Cards, TWEWY NEO, etc. Fantastic games.

I don't understand what's happening at Square-Enix.
They need new management and soon.

Too much talent in there not getting the guidance needed and it's not just their western studios.

So many games releasing back to back, most of them mediocre, with no promo, in a time so many heavy hitters are released as well...what do they expect?
Hoping for the same PR statements for this as Tomb Raider (you know...after selling over 3.5M in like 3 weeks) and Guardians of the Galaxy got though.

square enix keeps getting bad sales on their big games. The game is actually GOOD, but the way they're marketing their big games is not working. Seems like they're advanced in technology but very outdated when it comes to sell games.

Agreed. I almost missed out on GotG because of how absolute fucking trash the presentation was for the game back at E3. I hated that presentation so much I thought the game was going to be aids.

Thankfully, the game was freakin’ fantastic. Same thing here, great game But it had some horrible showcases. If anything, Square just needs to hire new marketing.

" This data only covers retail sales and doesn’t reflect digital,"

Considering this wouldn't it make a ranking amongst games from 1997 and 2003 kind of pointless? What's the percentage change in digital in JPN since that time?

It was also the best selling game the week it came out so...... slow sales in Japan then.

Maybe the tech needed a bit more budget? Demo gameplay was fun but wowzers the graphics were potato. Didn’t help that I turned off Horizon to play.

I enjoyed the demo and I'm planning to play it.

But the release time was just bad. They clearly decided to make a dark hack-and-slash Final Fantasy game because of the success of From Software games in the last decade. But then they release the game less than a month after Elden Ring :messenger_tears_of_joy:

From the article it sounds like the opposite from someone on reddit.

I haven't played it so can't pass judgement personally.

I'm talking about the actual game. Visually even elden ring is trash on PC with also a bad optimization. I have a RTX 3060 which should be good enough and even at 1080p the game has horrendous framedrops

It's TeamNinja though isn't it?
But I agree SE needs to have some consistency with their games, especially with the way they look.
Going from FFVII REMAKE to this or any other of their games makes wonder if they're made by the same company.

Never knew these games sold so well on PSP.
People look at PSP as a flop somehow when the truth is it simply didn't get to be a beast as Nintendo DS but it still sold over 80M consoles. That's around the same as Gameboy Advance and more than 3DS.

It simply was competing against the Nintendo DS, which to this day is the only console that got close to outselling the PS2.

PSP had a lot of games that sold quite well tbh.

With physical sales alone not meaning much these days, I'll say maybr it's finally time Square Enix realize that this gritty bullshit style they've been pursuing is not what fans want. Forget trying to imitate the west. Ypu suck at it.

Do what you're good at, and what you big in the first place, colorful fantastical worlds with heart.

It took about ten hours for me, but I ended up getting hooked on this thing and put in 60 hours and a platinum trophy 🏆 in on it. Sure the visuals aren’t great in certain levels, but the combat and job systems are some of the best in recent memory for me, and the Diablo 3 type loot system is perfectly incorporated. The story is convoluted at the beginning but comes together nicely at the end, which is not very normal for anything with Final Fantasy in the name. I would recommend this to anyone who loves great battle systems and loot systems.

I thought the demo was great. I'm looking forward to jumping in. I finished Elden Ring and Triangle Strategy. Playing Horizon Forbidden West now, but I think this will be next up.

I mean.. who didn't see this coming. A big draw of final fantasy is an alternate reality world with beautiful aesthetics. This game looks like a knockoff DMC with half the budget.
