With PlayStation's acquisition of Haven earlier this week, the platform holder is pushing deeper into the live-service space. But PlayStation reiterates that it will continue to create the premier single-player games that it has been known for these last few years.

In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, head of PlayStation Studios Herman Hulst says, "Obviously we will always carry on making these single-player narrative-based games such as Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us, and Horizon Forbidden West."

He continued, explaining, "But you've spotted correctly that we have invested in live service games, because that's incredibly exciting for us. It allows us to build larger worlds, it allows us to create really meaningful social connections between players."

Hulst also notes that PlayStation still has plenty of single-player games in development or in conceptualism
, but the Haven acquisition provides an opportunity to add a studio that specializes in live service games to the overall portfolio.

Haven Studio head Jade Raymond says that she's excited to make a PS5 exclusive game, considering PlayStation's track record with high-scoring first-party titles. "PlayStation has its own unique secret sauce to getting to those amazing games. It's not by chance that you see so many 90+ blockbusters [from Sony]," she explains. "It's because they do something a little differently, and that's been the thing that we've experienced over the last year."

I don't think anyone expected Sony to suddenly turn all their output into GaaS.
Though it is a bit disappointing that their recent acquisitions have all been GaaS focused, probably with more coming into the future

Also:

Some people have been afraid as games get more expensive to make, these companies would start chasing a single, very lucrative, method of monetizing their offerings. 🤷‍♂️
Oh I know - myself included. The fact that we've reached that point to begin with is what I'm grousing about :goog_relieved:

Did anyone truly believe that Sony would leave the third person single player narrative?

It's what they are praised for. GaaS is just turning the antennas out to see if it works for them as a side thing.

Including Bungie they have over 10 GaaS under the works, and before Bungie (who has 3 or 4 games under development) they had over 25 games under development. Meaning that GaaS are only around a third of the games they had under development (counting Bungie).

And well, it would be pretty retarded to think they would leave SP focused, no GaaS games when they had games like TLOU, Spider-Man, Uncharted, Horizon, GoW, GoT etc selling (or on track tto sell) over 15M units.

And more to come.

Nothing stopping them turning some single player games into service games either. It make more sense than DLC but it's really the same shit in a different wrapper. I'd rather regular content for game I love over a reinvention of the wheel and missing the mark. Cough Halo Infinite over 6.5 years. I'd rather a GaaS campaign game.

Good to hear, bring on more cool games. I'm down.

Well, some goombahs are certainly buying the stupid fucking things :messenger_tears_of_joy:

By the millions it seems. It's why I occasionally get worried about an all service games future. More power to those that like that, but it would mean I would have to finally tackle my backlog 'cause I wouldn't be buying any more new games.

Oh noooo!

Whatever will the usual suspects bitch and moan about now?
Hilarious because Herman literally stated that they will continue to make story driven single player games yet we get comments like the below:

Woohoo should i grind 100 hrs to get the choas blades in the next gow or buy them for $40.
Its comedy gold 😂. I guess in today's society reading comprehension is not a priority.

It is called a "backlog".

I call it having a life. I know this is a gaming forum but is it so bizarre that someone could spend their time inbetween 30-40 hour game releases doing literally anything else but looking for the next game to play?

If you’re an actual busy and productive person elden ring and horizon should be enough to last someone months
