GRID Legends - PlayStation 5 vs Xbox Series X/S - Digital Foundry Tech Review

This is a good example of gen-on-gen improvements in CPU/GPU architecture and good optimization on the developers part.

Last gen barely manages 1080p/60 with drops and next gen is mostly 2160p with no drops.

TBH I am not sure that is the case. If we look at any other game SX and PS5 are just about 2x more powerful than previous gen X and some 4x more than the previous gen base consoles. I do not think this game is CPU heavy it is a cross gen game, something like CP2077 and others are more demanding and proper representative.

It could very well be what D Darsxx82 suggested on the last page, maybe the last gen versions weren't the priority for development, with the new gen being the primary focus.A

All new gen consoles run at what looks like 100% locked 60 FPS at high resolutions. Which is pretty damn good.

That DF analysis is interesting because like three weeks ago, OpenSurprise had their own analysis and it showed some weird framerate drops on all three, but particularly Series X when more than a few cars were on the screen. PS5 had some framerate drops at the very start of certain races and when initially switching into first-person view, but none outside of those moments.

So either the game got patched since that comparison, Open Surprise fabricated some results, Digital Foundry are omitting certain results, or they both tested different parts of the game where the problems I saw in the first comparison only apply to those specific sections. Or, Open Surprise had a bugged setup?

Gotta be one of those because that footage I saw in the first comparison weeks ago, it was not 100% locked 60 for either system and Series X had a lot more noticeable drops.

If you're interested, this is the video for the earlier analysis I'm referring to. Again tho, there could've been a patch between these two that cleaned up all the performance issues across the consoles, I'd like to think.

There actually has been a patch, another poster mentioned in the last page that the pre-patched SX version was prone to issues.

Looks like the patch was a massive improvement.

I have the game on the Series X. When playing the game through Quick Resume it has crazy framedrops in rainy/busy areas. When doing a fresh boot of the game it runs smoothly in the same races.

Different patches... different results.

I mentioned it back.

The XSX version at its release showed a desperate bug that destroyed the framerate , and the replays and you had to restart the game frecuently To the point that in the replays the AI cars were still and you could control your car :messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy:. 100% sure that the author of that video recorded during that active bug. Fortunately a patch solved the problem and now it is perfect.

You have the option of the 10 hours of trial in Gamepass/EA and try for yourself, the game is highly recommended for lovers of arcade racing games

Doing it as we speak. The 10hr trial that is.

It's no Horizon but it's still a very fun arcade racing game.

And I am always down for a game which has real life FMV videos in it :D

So PS5 has ~60% higher resolution at lower bounds, but XSX has 'slightly higher resolution across gameplay'? That must be a first. Why not give precise figures for the supposed slight resolution edge of XSX and provide side by side pictures?

It's not the first time, and there's not way to give the numbers you're are asking.
It's only possible to give the maximum and minimum. How would you compare a minute by minute race? It's impossible. Simple informing that the averages are usually higher on the SeX is enough.

Oh so the results in that Open Surprise video were due to a bug exploit and maybe lack of Quick Resume optimization by the game code? That makes more sense; can't picture a game like this being too big an issue for Series X when Series S was not showing the same framerate issues (lower resolution notwithstanding).

TBF tho, the Open Surprise video was probably done at the time the current-gen version of the game released, and when the bug was still present. I guess maybe a week or two afterwards the bug was patched and Digital Foundry are testing the post-patch version resolving those issues. Lines up for me.

Ok, you know what, this game's pretty fun going by the trial.

I just might end up buying or renting this separately.

- PS5 resolution is dynamic 1296p-2160p. Series X is 1008p-2160p. But both are operating close to or at 4K most of the time, with Series X having actually having a slight resolution advantage. Series S is 936p-1440p.

- Setting seem to be the same across all three consoles, except for the cube maps, which operate at 60 fps on PS5 and Series X and 30 fps on Series S.

- Performance is locked 60 fps on all 3 machines during gameplay. There are some dips during replays, with Series S struggling a bit more.

- There's a 120 fps mode on PS5 and Series X (not on Series S). In this case rez drops to dynamic 1440p and settings take a hit. Performance is pretty solid.

Suddenly a game with a higher res on XSX and they talk about it. Don't remember them talking about it when PS5 had the better resolution in Elden Ring.

I support that statement. Dirt 5 is an excellent arcade racing game. A lot of merit to be a launch game and come out on 10 platforms.

I thought it was okay at first but the game gets very repetitive, I struggled to finish it.

Game quality aside, I bought it on Xbox Series X as something to play at launch, but was not impressed by how much better the PS5 version was. On XSX there is basically no AF, noticeable flickering shadow bugs not present on PS5, and it runs at lower resolution than PS5, so you lose a lot of the fine detail that 4K is meant to bring:

EnW1JUDXMAM2xCr

That's not even touching on the reduced LOD bug in the high framerate mode, which took a while to fix on XSX. XSX also generally had more framerate drops in its 60fps mode. It just wasn't a good showing to me. You normally expect some trade-off ie. a game might acceptably run worse because it's running with higher settings or higher resolution. But Dirt 5 was just universally worse in every way on XSX, which was somewhat embarrassing for the supposed 'most powerful console ever' at the time.

Anyway I am glad that Codemasters have gotten to grips with both consoles since then.

when is it on Gamepass?

There's 10 hr trial right now you can play via EA Pass (incl. with Game Pass Ultimate).

But going by previous Dirt game track records, and that this is an EA game, full game should come to game pass fully within a few months.

Seems people don't realize that during gameplay in this game Xbox Series X runs at higher resolutions than PS5. Not sure what the reason is behind that lower resolution bound, or when it occurs, but during gameplay Series X seems to have the edge.

Oliver says in the video the lower bounds are seen in pictures taken immediately after a camera cut, so probably a frame or two after a camera cut, SX drops down and then it climbs back up to a higher DRS than PS5 for the majority of game play.

But most importantly, both seem to be at or close to 4K during game play and don't drop a single frame. Which is impressive.

Yep, even 120 Hz mode is rock solid. Very nice.

It is true that XSX did not have its best version at launch, but later it has seen many patches and for 1 year it has been a version up to par, resolving all the aspects you mentions and expanding its content.

Beyond the debatable XSX version at its launch, the game, in my opinion, is a very entertaining arcade game and made under a very, very good base technology that I think has not been valued enough. A game where you see things that others don't even bother to try. Fully dynamic lighting, cool weather effects and effects everywhere. Not to mention a level of detail in great cars (use photo mode and you'll see) and damage system in vehicles light years better than GT7 or Forza.

In general, defending the same thing as Oliver from DF, I thought it was a fantastic game and of great merit being a launch game and more seen than seen so far. And surely with 1/4 of means and budget that the GT and Forza of turn enjoyed.

Different opinions i think...

This is excellent optimization work from the team it sounds like.

Because the bottom of SX resolution is between camera changes ( I presume flicking between camera views it must go lower on SX for a split second) in very intense scenes not typical of gameplay. Where SX has a higher rez is in gameplay so its higher rez most of the time.
I thought most of the time they were both 4k

It's a shame PSVR2 isn't out yet, this game would have been perfect for it (Dirt 5 would be awesome as well). Perhaps both can be ported for it in the future. A man can dream...

Huh? In every comparison where the PS5 might have a framerate advantage DF say it. Why would they be OK with talking about a better Framerate but cover up a resolution difference? Especially when a framerate drop is more perceivable than a slight resolution difference.
DF arnt a Xbox biased organisation, infact you could say they are anti xbox because John L said he hates Microsoft and wishes they never got into gaming.

As I’ve said before, dynamic res makes these direct comparisons pretty pointless. They’ll all look similar, they’ll all perform similar.

But I’m all for it to maintain frame rate.

PS. Dirt 5 was just boring, turgid racing. It was very disappointing compared to Dirt 2 and 3 (which I loved).

Not necessarily. You can still have one system with a much lower DRS than the other. But that didn’t happen in this case so they are pretty much equal with the XSX having a minimal advantage.

Another title where the XSS version of the game performs significantly better than version on the most powerful console of last generation. To boast higher resolution and higher frame rates than the X1X is quite the feat for a $300 system. That is to say nothing about the X1, the system the XSS replaced, version of this game which isn't even in the conversation. It's great to see what is possible if a developer puts in some time on the XSS. Jason Ronald and his team deserve tons of credit for what is clearly the best value in gaming this generation. Kudos.

Well shit, isnt that what a new gen console is supposed to do? Pretty telling that you have to highlight it.

I’ve been playing it on my XSS and it’s exceptional.

Unfortunately there have been a few cases where the One X version of a game seems like it's doing better than the Series S version, and folks love to pounce on that.

This game, however, One X struggles at 1080p/60 with drops while Series S does dynamic 1440p~ with a rock solid 60 FPS during game play.

*rubs eyeballs*

Not even a full 1080p on the X is a new record.

Yup and the biggest detractors don't own the system and usually don't know what they are talking about. The XSS is perfectly fine for it's target audience and you can't get better performance for less money.
