DF: Grand Theft Auto 5 - PlayStation 5 vs Xbox Series X - Graphics/Performance/Features Tested

He kind of did after someone posted a GIF of him claiming the XSX version had a 1 minute load time.

What does a longer load time have to do with the XSX being in poor condition? I mean if the PS5 does load faster with something it makes sense given the differences in the I/O. Just like if the XSX puts out a higher resolution it doesn’t mean the PS5 version is poor.

Obviously the PS5 version would be inferior, it’s the weaker console.

Summary:

- Only significant load time is same spot from menu, 20 seconds on SX and 23 seconds on PS5.

- 3 modes on PS5/SX alike.

- Fidelity mode: Fixed 4K on both PS5/SX with no DRS with RT shadows mainly from sun cast shadows.
- Fidelity mode runs with 30 FPS cap and feels similar to PS4 version and sluggish compared to 60 FPS.

- Performance RT: 60 FPS with same RT shadows. Easily DF's recommended way to play.
- 1440p/60 FPS. TAA resolves well, good trade off and highly recommended.

- Performance Non RT: no RT shadows, 60 FPS, 1440p target.

- Differences between consoles are subtle and nitpick territory.
- Textures, lighting quality, effects are match between the two.
- PS5 adds extra shadow texture under cars not found on SX in any mode.
- Shadow and SSAO quality is identical otherwise.
- Series X uses higher cube map reflections on car bodies. This only appears in non RT mode.
- Otherwise they are identical, with low grade anisotropic filtering on both.

- Between the Fidelity/RT Perf mode, nothing much stands out except RT shadows.
- In practice all 3 modes have same geometry, draw distance etc on both PS5 and SX.
- The only advantage is that Fidelity mode runs cube map reflections on higher resolution than the other.

- Performance RT mode: PS5 and SX have perfect 60 with some exception drops on both to 50s and some to 40s.
- You can incur more drops in free roaming by creating chaos in the city, but regular missions don't show issues 99% of the time.

- PS5 and SX drop in different areas in perf RT.
- eg PS5 drops to 40s in the "Mr. Phillips" mission and same spot has significant lead in same spot.
- eg2 In one Franklin mission SX drops to 50s and PS5 has no drop in the same spot.
- Both are capable of drops but never disruptive.

- In Non RT perf mode the performance profile is the same as above but with lesser drops.
- A few drops in SX to 55 FPS range still in the stress spots.

- Fidelity mode: DF only noted one drop below 30 in their testing during practical game play.
- The same "Mr Phillips" mission has a sustained drop to 20 FPS on PS5. SX drops to 27 FPS on the same spot.
Should be in op or first post. Great write up sir 👍

There was a lot of bold statements about the performance of this game on PS5 vs Series X that turns out to not have been true at all.

The game is pretty solid on both consoles, less than 1fps average advantage for PS5, and less than 1% advantage at maintaining 60fps in both Perf RT and Performance mode according to VGTech

Series X is better in the 4K native mode, but it ain't by much, both are more or less flawless except for that one Trevor mission. I'm sure others can be found with a more thorough test.

PS5 looks more steady on performance mode, but both perform great.
And they trade in Performance RT mode depending on the scene, but again both perform great.

I know some hate to hear this... but VRR being supported on Series X makes it the clear superior choice for this game based on the data shown. Riky Riky

VRR is a pretty damn big deal.

Yea - the car-contact shadow is missing on the top one. Should have cropped the car portion to make it a real-guess. ;P

I didn't notice that, the reason I was asking is because PS5 sometimes has that thing where gamma is higher than the XS version, so I think thats whats causing the perceived increase in sharpness here. Its not actually sharper its just when the contrast/gamma is higher our brain thinks it is.

Dynamic conditions are a thing in GTA V, which is why many regular gameplay scenes can't so easily be compared all the time. But in scenarios where the time of day, weather and other dynamic conditions are 100% identical, mostly time specific story sequences, there is no visual difference.
A significant difference is there and it's not what you are saying.

Regardless looking forward to a more thorough comparison.

Slight gamma differences and time of day related differences will always be there, it'll be impossible to get exactly 1 : 1.

Even in that picture you can see cloud coverage is different and the lighting on the big UNITE board is extremely different on both because of shadow/sunlight coverage etc.

NXGamer is the only big one left but based on VGTech and DF, SX and PS5 are pretty much identical.

I'm a bit puzzled why they didn't do Series S on this comparison and if it will get a separate video.

XSX loading faster is pretty telling, i.e. they aren't utilizing the new storage APIs etc but are most likely using the CPU for decompression like on last gen consoles. Otherwise PS5 would beat XSX every time.

There is no significant visual difference between the two games. You are literally seeing what you want to see.

That shadow thing on the PS5 appears to be some type of bug or oversight, not sure if it's meant to be off or meant to be on, but it makes almost no meaningful visual difference. Then Series X has higher quality car reflections it appears, but that's one of those things few will catch or notice. But on every comparable metric the games are identical. So whatever you may find to justify what your brain is telling your eyes it sees, more power to you, I suppose.

That's all.

I have doubts this would be the case if a game utilized Sampler Feedback Streaming on Series X. I'd be willing to bet the Series X would win out in such a scenario, but that's just my assumption till the data arrives.

I get that but I don't mean ToD differences its just been noted several times that PS5 has a different gamma than XS usually. That's my explanation for the sharpness difference, not that's its actually sharper.

I highly doubt that. The PS5's SSD is more than twice as fast, and the PS5 also has a better I/O pipeline in general that can keep the GPU fed at max rate.

Reminds me of that gen where crushed blacks were a thing on one platform but not the other. I believe it was the 360 Vs the PS3 if I’m not wrong.

The explosion code could use a rework to be better multithreaded. Because that's legacy code that exhibited the same issue on older platforms.

Other than that, its GTA V. Still looks reasonably well.

Not sure if it is the capture or what but those hills in the background seems lower quality in SX. Are they using some form of VRS ?

DF didn't mention in their video but VGTech's analysis thinks the RT mode in both PS5 and SX is using AMD's FSR, which is reconstruction from a lower resolution, i-e the possibility of dynamically scaling on both exists.

I found one of the images a bit interesting.
Seems a bit sharper on one of them:
XSXPerfRT_005.jpg

PS5PerfRT_005.jpg

That’s quite significant, but could be a result of multiple things - motion blur at time of capture, DRS (although nobody has caught any res drop), even a wrongly labelled screenshot from a different mode. It’s certainly not VRS, as everything in the picture is either lower res/blurred.

Nothing to read into I don’t think. They’re not all lying to us.

Yeah, the character models are very clearly not up to scratch anymore, but the environments and atmosphere still surprisingly holds up.

Wait you're seriously saying DF disabled the Internet connection to somehow .. mess with the loading time result ?

Oh boy that's a new one even for me. Please don't drop that tinfoil hat on the way out :messenger_tears_of_joy:
Again, put the warrior armor down, and try to actually read my post again.

I literally said.....he probably would have got the ....same result.....by just hitting X from the main menu....

Elden ring loaded slower then it should on Xbox. Dev issue is my guess.
GTA 5 probably runs some decent simulation for the world while it loads so just fast io and storage will only help so much.

I've heard people say the same about RE8 but I'm not sure if that's the case with every game. I mean I'm definitely not expecting the Xboxs I/O to be faster if I'm just looking at how the hardware is setup.

Edit: Faster than the PS5 I mean.

Oh I'm reading alright..

Ps, the result that is in the video is hitting x from the main menu into the same mission for both consoles already.
So for loading from the beginning....disabling your internet connection is the only way to have XSX be on par with PS5 and its disabled logos.

Me either, but if a lower spec PC loads faster than Xbox it probably means Xbox wasn't optimized properly. Also if Xbox loads faster than ps5 it probably means ps5 wasn't optimized properly or there is a lot of compute involved so io advantages don't count for much.

Lets try this once again, this time a lil slower....

Didnt someone on this forum already show that loading from hitting X they were the same loading times?

Tom not disconnecting the internet....would have probably still had the XSX load faster....for his test....

Is that better or do I need to dumb it down even more....

But this back n forth with you confirms I shoulda never responded to you..

Thank god for the ignore feature.... buh bye...

Now, kids, that's what we call a classic case of back peddling, let's reiterate one more time what your first post in this topic was:

The issue with Elden Ring is that it's not optimized properly on either system. I wouldn't say the game takes full advantage of the PS5s I/O just because it loads much faster than the competitions.
