It's Norse Mythology, rich enough? They all looked pretty white to me.

Are you saying the fake people in a fake world in a fake story borrowing from Scandinavian folklore as interpreted by Japanese developers. . .should have to look like real people?

What do you mean "the story of Dionysus" as if there's only one that was widely adopted by all ancient Greeks?

That's literally the opposite of what I was talking about.

I feel like it goes without saying that Valkyrie profile is going to be based on the popular interpretations of the characters that have been around for several thousand years rather than even considering trying to be accurate to their, "original origin". They've made references to things clearly written long after that so I don't see why they would not be including interpretations/fanfiction like the one done by Nonnus.

And "I think" the first accounts of their interaction with India were much earlier than 500BC and that there is reason to believe that they had some interactions with dark-skinned people even during the inception of these stories but that's not very relevant.

So again "Norse myth contains characters who are known for colored skin."

See how moronic it sounds?
Wow, such a way to validate your argument. It almost feels like it's not good enough to hold on it's on. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Acting like changing the appearance, gender and race of people in popular historical and religious stories or having them interact of people of different races isn't something anime has constantly done since its inception does indeed

Sound moronic

I greatly disagree, it literally looked like it was a generation behind.

a generation behind you say? have you even seen the game?

its using the tech tri-ace developed and improved on their games during that gen it uses very advanced rendering tech that where common in the mid of PS3 and X360 generation it may not be as precise as those consoles but the result arer amazing you wont find many games with as good illumination and depth of field in that gen let alone a generation before or in dreamcast

So since it’s fake it shouldn’t matter anymore right?

Straight people can play lgbt roles right? Any race should voice whatever race is portrayed right? I mean it’s all pretend. It’s not real anyway. Never mind that there are actually historical characters nowadays that are race and gender swapped.

There are actual people who enjoy lore you know. Just like I wouldn’t want a white guy suddenly becoming the hero of my people‘s myth and religion, I imagine white guys don’t want their heroes suddenly taken over by another race. Cultural appropriation works both ways.

It's fake so use your brain to find some logic here.

Those universes already evolved since they were introduced decades ago. So stop pretending it's hard to follow now.

be like "da series expert here and I don't agreez" lol

I greatly disagree, it literally looked like it was a generation behind.

I agree and I like the game, its a great title.....clearly it didn't look like its 3D peers on PS1 and looked like SNES game. So I agree its one of the best looking 2D games on that system as its a personal favorite of mine.

It should have been put on PSN generations ago on their classics as it legit is a PS1 classic and a shame Square didn't put it on there.

but with how dated it looked, even with me liking how it look, it supports that this series for better or worse has a history of looking 1 gen behind. Not sure if its a budget thing, style or art direction or whats going on with that. tbh

I'm with Epic Sax CEO Epic Sax CEO . Valkyrie Profile is at least on par with other contemporary PS1 titles visually. Like allot of titles from the time, VP employed high-detail matte paintings as backgrounds. Allot of them aren't as distinctive or memorable as in, say, any of the Final Fantasy games for the console but that's another discussion (the thoughts running through my mind on that are mostly connected to how quickly you run through allot of these places and how little time you have to soak them in, comparatively - stuff like the intro animation in Valhalla is still beautiful).

VP also stands out for how wonderfully animated its characters are. Every character has several frames of animation for each movement on generally high-detail sprites, far above anything I can think of a generation prior. I've played most of the major Super Nintendo RPGs - Most of them consist of player character models that need to fit in set dimensions in and out of combat and the most flattering thing you can say about them visually is that the static sprites you're fighting look fantastic. Enemies in Valkyrie Profile are a step-down, in that respect - lower detail but they're all animated (and outside the scope of visual design discussion, I'll add that it serves to better integrate them for the general game feel by designing the player and enemy characters together on the same system).

What's put VP over the top in my mind though has always been the outstanding portrait work. Nearly every(?) character in the game has beautiful, traditionally classical art work in dialogue. I don't know whether or not that level of rendering is possible a generation prior. I don't see... why not (I'm not a graphical engineer) but the best thing I can say about it is that no game (that I know of) before or since has ever had portrait work that good.

tldr version: Don't use hyperbole, man. Unless you can name any PS1 game that looks as good as Valkyrie Profile 2 or, I don't know, some Super Nintendo game (that seems like a good standard to go by, if we're talking genre games - the SNES was the go-to that generation for RPGs) that looks as good as Valkyrie Profile 1, you look like you're blowing hot air. These games have never been a generation behind.

Appropriation is fine both ways, I got no problem with characters getting reimagined across different series.

These characters are doing totally different things across stories, it's absolutely fine if they look different too.

Sure.

Stop. Again, and I don't understand why this is hard: "Valkyrie Profile" isn't real. It is no more representative of Norse mythology and culture than God of War (Reboot). Trying to "claim" this IP and shove cultural dictates into it are funking stupid.

See above.

I agree with 99% of what you stated, I love how those games look, but I stand by them looking a generation behind and I don't mean that in a negative way. The PS1 game indeed looks like a SNES game and I wouldn't doubt that it was if you played it on a SNES right in front of me or something. So when you say something like SNES being the go to for RPGs that look as good as Valkyrie Profile 1, sir....thats my point.

That is why I believe they looked a generation behind if you yourself are stating many SNES games looked as good as a game that released on PS1... its not to say its bad or ugly, its to say it looked like a generation behind. So we'll have to see more of it to see how much of this new game still has that style, art direction, theme etc

edit.

I'm also going to agree with Danjin44 Danjin44 and A ANDS on this as this game isn't a biopic or documentary or about any real life thing, I don't think they are going for accuracy and its pretty loose on what its talking about...its fake, its literally a fantasy game about something completely fake. My recommendation would be to glace at that persons post history as they seem to get upset certain demographics in video games as if they are simulations or documentaries or matters of fact or some shit.

I said the same thing about the previous entry.

Because SO4 still a good game even with questionable characters . Gameplay still strong . SO5 and exist archive problem is they has low budget game and people expect ton of content like their usual game .

Moreover , SO Anamnesis is one of best and smooth action control mobile game on market .

SO6 so far look better with their new gameplay , dual protagonist and optional party member , people like to shit on characters face but the body and environment are pretty detail compare to this new Valkyrie

Valkyrie profile Lenneth had the worst official translation I'd ever seen. It was worse than Google translate fan translations.
This can't be worse.

Man I hope this is good. I'm day 1 on both this and Star Ocean.

I preordered both on Steam. If they suck then I'll probably be done with Star Ocean, and I'll likely not purchase an unknown (to me) IP from Square Enix again until I know someone who has played it.

Wonder what’s going to be worse, this game or Star Ocean 6
I’ll be supporting this game because I care about the IP but I don’t know what people see in this game.

It’s very blatantly low-budget. The combat looks unsatisfying, the environments could not look more drab, and for a game that’s releasing in less than a month we REALLY haven’t seen much. It’s probably not going to be very long.

Star Ocean at least has ambition, great-looking combat, and some cool environments.

I wouldn’t be surprised if VE has better writing but that’s it.

Yeah IDK. SO6 looks like some anime abomination with delusions of grandeur, that will make me lose some faith in humanity. VE just looks like a bland, low budget game that will be forgotten as soon as it’s released.

Anyway sorry to be Mr. negative. I’m not expecting good things from either but I’d be happy to be proven wrong.

fun skin facts for everyone!
darker skin better protects against the sun's UV rays.
the body produces melanin as a protective response to sun exposure, which leads to darker skin.

hot climates usually equals fewer clothes and more time spent outdoors, so more sun exposure, so darker skin.
colder climates usually equals more clothes and more time spend indoors, so less sun exposure, so lighter skin.

in hot climates, lighter skin has a disadvantage: due to insufficient natural protection, it'll burn and your DNA will get damaged (e.g., skin cancer) due to UV rays. so it's healthier to have darker skin.
in cold climates, darker skin has a disadvantage: sun exposure is healthy/necessary (e.g., produces vitamin D), and in climates where sun exposure is limited, darker skin wont absorb enough sunlight. so it's healthier to have lighter skin.

It’s ok! IRL literally every single person around me is really jealous of my naturally huge ass that I got from squats at the gym so I’m used to people being negative

L M F A O I swear to god I did not see this random ass post until I posted my random ass (no pun intended) post. Is this the power of Valkyrie Elysium?

I wanna hope they didn’t mess up the combat to keep in line with some sorta flow of the franchise. Let it flow and come together.

No. You're right to be skeptical. Square needs to quite releasing crap indie-looking garbage.

Something I noticed today while eyeballing the Digital Deluxe edition... It looks like that version of the game unlocks 4 days earlier than the standard release?

I wonder when the review embargo lifts, before or after this early release, because I'd totally preorder if I knew the game was a 70+ on Metacritic. It sounds like a demo is on its way so I'll probably be able to make my mind up based on that.
