Have you ever got on the scale and wondered how you gained weight?

I'm in my 30s, I've never been overweight, most of my family is though, but I've been at an average weight (according to BMI) for as long as I have kept track. I got on the scale today and I am at 162. That is the highest I've ever seen. That puts my BMI at almost 24 points, 1 point away from being overweight. I guess I was wearing clothes so maybe that accounts for 1 lb. or so, but still, I never thought I'd be this close to overweight.

Just a few years ago (2020) I was at a time sub-140. Doing lots of cardio, and working out virtually daily. I want to get back to near that level again, but it seems like it will be a lot of work...

Anyone else here get on a scale and were surprised to see the result? I'm setting a goal for myself right now to get down to at least 150 by the end of the month.

Not really personally.

I have a weird “internal scale” though don’t know how else to describe it. I don’t think I’ve ever been surprised by my weight lol. Guess within 1 or 2 pounds.

More the contrary. I keep wondering why I don‘t gain weight even though I consume above my caloric maintenance. Everyone keeps telling me how it‘s just about calories in and calories out but it just doesn‘t seem to be. What you eat makes a bigger difference than anyone is willing to acknowledge.

Bottom line: Don‘t eat trash.

Only while on steroids. I didn't realize they had that effect. But otherwise, I know when and I why I've gained/lost weight.

I’m one of those annoying people who have always exercised as just a part of a lifestyle, rain or shine, feeling good or bad. So this hasn’t happened to me, however once my knees go or my back goes I’m sure I’ll be on My 600lb Life writhin a few years

This reminds me couple weeks ago I had craving for ice cream because I haven’t had it in 5 months! Went to Slab order butter pecan in waffle cone! Shit was $6, was good tho!

I’m no health nut but just been trying to stay away from the sugary stuff! My kidney stones…..

Not at all. Dad ate like shit, he got fat as fuck and died early.

I don’t eat like shit and look good. But I probably will die early anyways lmao.

Nope. I solved the mystery of weight gain some time ago. It's usually me eating food and not moving a lot.

I did notice a change in my metabolism around age 28. That's when I had to teach myself how to eat like an adult instead of a college student. It's possible you're just later than usual if this is a sudden change without any other possible causes.

I've weighed after taking a humongous dump and left wondering how I still weigh the same.

I looked into this. Poop doesn't weigh very much. Most of the weight you lose either comes out through pee, or through breathing. The air you breath out is heavier than the air you breath in to the point that the average person breaths out about 2 pounds every 24 hours.

Maybe a big runny diarrhea weighs more than a long solid turd then.

How level your floor is can make your reading fluctuate a pound. Might be hard to read on an analog scale, but a digital reader will show different weights depending where your scale is on your bathroom floor.

I've weighed myself before and after a shower and I've lost weight.

Maybe go to a doctor obviously better scales I like home scales, weight watching to begin with is weird to me, you know your weight now that I know a number all of a sudden life is different? Are you going to weigh more after drinking beer and pizza? Yeah.

True, 300 McDonald's calories is not the same as 300 Calories of veggies.

Nah, it was frequent consumption of alcohol, sugary drinks and snacking.
I heavily cut back on strong alcohols (mostly stick to beer these days), eliminated sugary drinks and changed snacks from stuff like chips and curated meats to fruits and nuts. And that pretty much did the trick and I'm back to a normal weight.

I'm not really super strict about it either. I'll still have a gin, or bag of chips or a soda from time to time. But they're things I'll have once or twice a month instead of every other day.

In 2 years of covid WFH I'm basically the same weight. Overweight, but the same.

I ate out for lunch every day at the food court or office cafeteria, which is bad. I don't do that anymore, but now I sit on my ass and snack more as my kitchen is nearby. So it balanced out for me. But many peers I know have said they've gained 10+ lbs.

I stopped drinking almost a month ago now and I'm already down 3-4 lbs. I need to get rid of another 10 or so to be back down to my sexy weight.

Before the pandemic I was 30 lbs overweight, but I got into fitness, stopped the booze, and lost it during 2020. Then during 2021 I gained back about 20 pounds of it.

I'm never surprised by where my weight is at.

You are getting older and not working out as much.

Can't help getting older, but you can start eating much smarter during the week and working out.

You can get it back under control.

I used to have no understanding of it which is why I was overweight / borderline medically obese (6'2, 230 lbs).

So I educated myself on nutrition. I learned that I have to count calories every day in order to eat properly. Without doing that I was having 4,000 and 5,000 calorie days regularly - like once a week or more. I had no idea. I just never felt "full", and had no idea how many calories were in drinks - I'd drink 1.5L soda a day and a couple of beers.

Now I eat an average of 2,300 a day - no liquid calories - and my weight has been stable around 175 for the past 8 years. It's all math.

Made a crappy phPBB forum once ... once.
I put it down to my age. Nearing 50 don’t burn calories off as fast as I consume them anymore.

Antidepressants and bad sleep schedule aka lack of sleep. You can gain 40 pounds easily with out eating junk food. Hormones stop producing properly and you feel like shit every day.

I never once wondered how I gained weight since I always remain aware of my weight. Granted I am currently at my peak physical form. Most fit ever and weigh less than I did when I was like... 11 or 12.

HOWEVER, I have always wondered how people let themselves become obese blobs. Even when I lost control(self control) of my weight in my early 20s. I stopped myself before I hit that point from sheer panic over the possibility of even hitting that.

I lost 30 lbs over 4 months and the only change I made was cutting sugar completely out of my diet and limit carbs. I hate most vegetables, and I'm not going super low calories or trying for keto or anything. The first month or so cold turkey on sugar was horrible, but I don't really miss any of it now.
