[DF] Elden Ring performance: what to expect on PS5, Series X/S and PC

lol so all the drama over not showing performance without the day 1 patch....and it's still the same as in the beta. Hopefully by the time I get a Ps5 performance is better or at least VRR finally gets enabled.

Shame that FROM still can't get their shit together regarding performance. It's so weird to me that they just don't seem to care about it when their games tend to be more gameplay focused compared to a lot of the AAA industry.

Imagine suggesting to load up a previous generation version on a current gen console as a solution. Completely unsatisfactory. PC version unlocks in 5 hours.

Since it's the same game, playing the Ps4 version basically amounts to lowering the visuals to get better performance. Which something extremely common on PC unless you are on top of the line hardware

There's nothing to prove. The digital version gives you both versions, it's obvious the physical will do to. Isn't the same for every crossgen game, apart from those whose upgrades are paid? This isn't rock science.
PS5 disc version doesn't give you both, PS4 version does as far as I am aware.
I think my copy has already shipped so I can't switch to PS4 version, not that I would play that version anyway.

Of course there are performance issues in every platform. Fortunately, I'm not usually bothered by most, and I can deal with a lot of shit if I have to, so there's no need for me to get anxious about whatever might show up. I had already decided to go PS5 so I guess I'll see what's what tonight.

Regardless of whether fixes are coming, I hope everyone excited for this game can enjoy it.

Seems like pretty lackluster performance for such a highly reviewed game.

I’m sure it’s fine but how’d something like that go unnoticed by games “journalists”
They literally agreed to basically disregard it in the reviews until the day one patch. And then the day one patch doesn't really do anything. Namco played them like a damn fiddle.

Looks like John prefers the Series X/S due to VRR support:

Nice of you to let us know about your preference John.

Edit: I am sure this won't have an impact on sales of a massively important multiplatform game whatsoever.

Not so fast, let's compare what they say about VRR on Xbox vs VRR on PC shall we:

Vs

So leaning on the technology on console = good, but leaning on it on PC = not good

It's funny to see these inconsistencies within the same article.
Can't you read? PC has stutters that consoles don't, that's why vrr is more effective on Xbox, just read what you're quoting dude

But it has nothing to do with VRR, it stutters without VRR on PC I think.

3 months since the beta and no improvements with the fps? Kinda shitty. 97 on Metacritic though, woo!

Already been brought up earlier in the topic but they're talking about frametime spike issues on PC, not drops.

It's being brought up separately because along with the PC version not supporting higher than 60hz, it also suffers from the frame time spikes the console versions don't.

VRR can generally help better with drops, not with spikes, even though GSync does alleviate the issue somewhat.

In short, From's engine sucks.

This is EXACTLY what people were concerned about happening with the stuttering.

It isn't a bad suggestion. The brute force of the PS5 gives you 60FPS at significantly reduced image quality.
Highly disagree. This may make sense with the Series consoles. However, the performance difference between the PS5 : PS4 is night and day in terms of FPS. Additionally, lets not forget the minimal load times with the current gen/PC version.

Seriously.

Good game(probably), but looks like From just doesn't care/can't provide adequate level of performance and polish.

Reminds me of that particular eurojunk feel or Bethesda Seal of Quality.

All of this for 5 to 10 frames that isn't often on the PS5. Woosah. DF broke people.

@16:40 he goes into the PS5 backward compatibility. He doesn’t comment on load times running in this mode but makes a blanket statement of the PS5 loading best.

Just to clarify... Both DF and those PC streamers still don't have access to the day 1 patch, right?

I'm surprised PS4 loads that quickly. Bloodborne took fucking ages to load even after they improved it.

1.02 is the day one patch, I think, and it's available now.

Can confirm for ME that the issues GREW after the patch. Far beyond any cache rebuilds or stuff like that would account for.
More stutter. FPS might have been leveled out a bit(average a bit higher) but shadow errors were there still as well as popin and worse stutter.
Its rare a patch makes it worse but for me this one did. I wish I would have known it was coming. I was told that we had the day one. Then I heard rumors there was some other percolating.
Addendum placed on my review as well as video posted on results

Didn’t DF just recommend the Xbox version of cyberpunk because it has vrr even though it drops more frames than the PS5?

Havent they been doing this the entire generation even when the PS5 has better framerates because the XSX versions supported VRR?

the XSX has leaned on VRR the entire generation and now it's bad because PC has to lean on it?

I got my copy early and yeah, on PS5 it's not a locked experience. But I am used to playing From Software games and the unstable framerate has never been a deal breaker for me. I also wish for people to stop keep saying VRR since yes, it's going to be a great addition to people with a display that supports it, but still doesn't justify the goddamn game not being locked at 30/60. VRR should be a great option to have unlocked frame rates in game, not the solution for shitty performance. That said, I hope Sony releases it soon.

and this got a 97 Metacritic ... these journalist are a joke
That's because most people don't care that much about the technical aspect of the game. Their enjoyment wasn't affected by frame drops. Bloodborne too ran like shit, that didn't prevent me from loving the hell out of it. Same for Sekiro, it was far from a locked 60 fps game.

Yep, it's been available since this morning. It's around 5GB on PS5.

Ya agreed. VRR isn't a fix at all ever. It's just another bit of toping.

I will add that if other reviewers' experiences were somewhat like mine. This patch has worse perf in areas than the original did for me.

This doesn't show the PS4 version of the game running on the PS5. Of course the native apps running on their respective hardware have expected performance relative to generation.

In which platforms did you notice things getting worse?

It will likely be my game of the generation but it does frustrate me if it’s received absurd review scores whilst having this sort of technical performance.

Game journalism is just so infuriating.
Why? The game runs at 55-60 fps on the PS5. The other games on metacritic run at sub 30 fps like Zelda BOTW and GTAV, and 30 fps like RDR2. Of the top five 96+ games on Metacritic, only Mario Odyssey runs at 60 fps.

Just because it isnt locked at 60 fps, doesnt mean the performance is bad or the game is unplayable. DF has made everyone lose their minds. An unlocked 60 fps mode that drops frames every now and then will feel a lot smoother than 30 fps locked. Always.

I haven't played the Zelda game but Red Dead Redemption 2 should not be rated that high, not with those shitty controls.

Bloody hell, so the new patch has made the game worse.

Thanks Karak Karak for the heads up. I'll play to see how it is but I suspect the game won't be fixed for some time.

So annoying.

Also, all these people complaining about docking reviews because of fps issues. Ate you all ignoring the actual video evidence of horizon popping in buildings right in front of you, performance tanking to the point you have to restart the game. Fiddling with settings to stop choppyness in 30fps mode. Crashes, jank, the job lot?

Should that game have been docked too or is it just this one? These issues will be fixed I'm sure...yes it sucks that every game is launching broken but what do we do unless we all stop buying 70 pound games.

Because the only thing that *actually is* objective in a video game review is the technical performance. If there’s frame rate drops and inconsistency, it needs to be called out. And yes, PS5 looks like the best platform at the moment, but Series X and PC are disappointing.

You will find no bigger Souls fanboy than me. As I said, it will probably be my game of the generation. Just annoys me how little attention certain journalists pay to the most important aspect of a game.

Isnt it ironic that an Activision published FromSoft game shipped in a better state than a self published game?

Seems Activision quality control was better.

What’s the cheapest and decent TV with VRR support right now ?

Go 6 series if you have some extra money to spare.
