Nintendo Switch is the fastest selling home console to reach 100 million mark

You missed the whole point, that almost every person who owns a switch uses it at one point or another as a portable. I don't need to deny facts, I can spin them like you do. Just accept it, some people use the switch as a portable. This is a fact.
Surely you're kidding. If I say 55% mostly play it docked, I am implying that 45% mostly play it portable - a minority but not that far from 50%.

And since the only ones denying one of Switch's form factors is you lot - it surprises no one that plenty of people primarily use it as a handheld and the vast majority use it as a handheld at least some of the time.

That is until YOU the fact deniers take that data which shows docked mode is measurably preferred to handheld mode and argue that it supports your insistence that Switch is only a handheld.

What on earth is coursing through all of your neurons?

Valve is smart to advertise this way, because people will stop attack its graphic fidelity since almost no sane people would compare a Home Console to a handheld. Nintendo's branding of Hybrid is actually a two sided sword, it puts the device in a unfavorable position. If Nintendo would to advertise Switch as a handheld alone it would be equally if not more successful, and it solves the Switch Lite paradox.
It's called the fucking 'Switch'.

The very name of the product is all about its hyrid nature.

And only a few anoraks really care about graphical fidelity for it to put them off buying a console.

Switch OLED would have had one more sale if I had been able to purchase one before last Christmas.

Several friends have one and I was stoked to pick up Mario Odyssey, Metroid Dread, and the Links Awakening remake. Nothin doin'.

I suppose I'll pick them all up on the used market in a couple of years. But that is NOT the same.

This debate is going nowhere, most people don't even read, I'm tired of answering the same question over and over.

Preference is not a same as the functionality

Branding is not as same as the functionality

A plastic box that could play video game with a HDMI output is objectively A plastic box that could play video game with a HDMI output, you could take the branding or you could see it as a functionality

One device overselling another does not affect your enjoyment over your backlog of games

Switch will be successful no matter how they brand it, its the design itself that capture the consumer, whether you call it a Home console or a Handheld console with HDMI output, the hardware itself will not change.

Lastly what is there not to like about a handheld selling over a million? I don't understand this mentality. Nintendo had always been doing well in the handheld market all the way back to the original Game Boy. Why downplay its most unique strength? Even their least successful handheld which is the 3DS still doing better than its competitor in the handheld market. And when people looking at statistics why only stop at 3DS, why not look NDS, GBA, GB? especially when the entire video game industry is not as huge as of right now, Nintendo's previous handheld is selling as good if not better than Switch. Looking at sales only is not the whole picture, you also has to see the total market cap of the entire video game industry. Compare the market cap of 2022 and 2005, GBA is still doing really well.

So why do you care if it's a hybrid and therefore both a home and handheld console, you keep saying you are not bothered by it's success etc, so why expel so much energy and time trying to convince us it's one or the other.

As for market size the core market has pretty much remained the same, Nintendo are just attracting some customers from outside of the usual market, and who knows where the Switch will end up sales wise, so how it's doing re other Nintendo machines is unclear at the moment.

What? Didn't you just make my point for me there? And what about switch light, isn't there like 20 or 30 million of them?
I never said switch was only a handheld. Ever. My point was it can't be considered a home console, and that many of its sales can be contributed to its portable nature. The only debate can really be how many.

I'm not trying to convince anyone, you are the one that's trying to convince me right now, I already stated my statement in the previous pages when you debate with me, do I have to copy paste again? Why is it always has to be that someone is bother by the success? What is this mentality? Just because you care about the sales number does not mean everyone else do, you are trigged over nothing. All I did was just doing a summary of my statement which nobody cares to read when they quote me, did I just state in the previous page that you could see it whatever way you wish?

To use IFireflyl IFireflyl 's language. Let's agree to disagree. A monopoly does not have a product failure of the scale of the Wii U. If you think xbox and ps didn't compete with Wii U then I am afraid we really do live in different realities.

Yes the xbox and ps4 directly competed with the wii u, that's why it was crushed.
The Nintendo monopoly over the mobile market today is why you see Nintendo do things like maintain weak hardware with no price decreases and not launch a new system. It keeps them from being more competitive on software pricing. It all around makes them less consumer friendly.
Competition would be good for gamers.

I do not need to convince anyone, the Switch is an Hybrid console and has been since it's initial reveal, you could argue the lite is a handheld though.

I'm not trying to convince anyone either, the Switch is an handheld console packaged with HDMI+USB adapter that supports external power.

The bear of bad news
With all of these mental gymnastics going on, I think the PS2 Praetorian guard is getting a little nervous lol. They shook.

Just because a few members have that opinion doesn't mean they speak for everyone.

I think the PS5 will outsell the Switch when all is said and done regardless of this bullshit debate. The demand is off the charts.

It's only being held back by supply right now but it will be a long generation. Did you see the last NPD?

That's exactly what I'm trying to say, at least out of all the people that sees the device as a handheld in this post, I have yet to seen one that is defending another console, some of the user here triggered over nothing.

I doubt the PS5 will do Switch numbers, the Switch will get close to the PS2 when it's finished, Microsoft are going to share more of the pie this time round.

What you don't realise is that the console market is growing and that's why there's such insane demand.

PS5 is going to do gangbusters once the shortages are over.
Yes I believe you, even though the core console market has been at a 180 million consoles for generations now, and yes there is demand for both next generation consoles, but the fact they are in short supply also drives demand, at the end of the day the market size will remain the same.

They don't defend other consoles because these ludicrous things never come up, it's only when a Nintendo console is selling well that all this mental gymnastics and goal post moving from some starts. ;)

And I am well aware you have no issues with the Switch being a success.

Its funny because my favorite console is actually SNES, and in the 6th gen I play GameCube while all my friend is playing Xbox, my favorite franchise is Metroid series

Out of all 8th gen, I play Switch the most because of convenience alone.

We don't understand the mentality of refusing to acknowledge a product's core functions in attributing its success:

-usage statistics showing how strong TV play is for its adherents.
- the seamless transition from handheld to TV offering an indistinguishable home console experience not to mention its name.
-the existence of designed -for-TV games
- the lack of any practical difference between playing ps/xbox AND Switch on a TV.
-you and your tribe's inability to respond to any of these points.
- your tribe's mental gymnastics "it has a screen and its underpowered" and moving of goal posts to try to avoid comparison with Sony/MS as others have described. One of you labelled my questions "irrelevant" and you and others have completely ignored my points.

And yet you still claim that you are the misunderstood victims and we the evildoers twisting reality to fiendish fanboy ends.

I'd love you to debate with M MartyMcFly and GHG GHG so you can experience what fanboyism is really like.

Why don't you write a novel instead of posting. The fiction is quite compelling.

I do realize you have no issues with Nintendo, but you simply have a difference of opinion as to what the Switch is, I personally like the Wii U and Switch, and was pretty partial to the GameCube.

Yes, because after all these year of gaming, I just had fatigue of different marketing, I'm glad this time Nintendo doesn't do something stupid and utilize their most unique strength by making a desirable product

Pretty sure the Switch 2 will follow the same pattern, with more power and features.

I don't know about overall totals, and I don't even think the PS5 will beat Switch sales, but I do expect Switch sales are going to start dropping fairly quickly. Only because they've sold it to so many people already. I can't imagine there are 100 million more people trying to snag one. I could be wrong though.

There is no challenge when someone can't or not willing to even read. And loves to miss quote other people's statement like in this example I never said its "Irrelevant" you just made that up yourself. If you can't debate with logic then don't debate at all, its not going to be the best way to present yourself this way. So please do everyone a favor and stop quoting me.

I tried to agree to disagree, but he's in full Alpha mode. Just ignore him. Our thoughts on this are valid. We don't need some rando's validation on NeoGAF, and he is only responding to win, not to understand where we're coming from. I also put Lognor Lognor on ignore. I should have done that a long time ago.

Thanks god I found the ignore button, I'm not yet familiar with the UI of the forum.
Basically what he believe to be the "Core function" in reality is actually his own preference, What he claim how Nintendo call it its actually branding, but in the physical world its a self contained mobile gaming device with a HDMI+USB adapter with external power packaged in, and that is functionality. But somehow when he used the term "Core" or "Main" he basically confused these 3 different concept and lumped them all up in one word. And with this fundamental logical fallacy the conversation is going nowhere.

SeraphJan SeraphJan , the forum is Xenforo, and I love the functionality of it. Ignoring users isn't something I normally do. I can normally disagree and still be civil, but with those kind of people it's better to use ignore since they're just trying to beat you down.

First I admit and apologise that I have sometimes responded to others in responding to you, giving the impression that you said things that you didn't like "irrelevant ". Guilty as charged.

But the sentiment is absolutely indicative of your attitude. Go back to read our argument on laptop vs desktop. I set out practical, functional differences that showed that a laptop as desktop isn't equivalent to a desktop but a Switch IS functionally indistinguishable from a Ps/Xbox home console when docked. Your response? Those 8 things I mentioned are preferences not functional differences (actually they are both), I'm moving the goalposts (huh?) and because the Switch is less powerful it can't be compared to PS/Xbox as a home console, thus implying that both WiiU and Wii are not home consoles. Oh and calling my points "nonsense " Is not a very mature debating tactic either.

You want to come across as an honest and reasoned debater but youre either being dishonest and obdurate or we have a serious issue with understanding each other.

I never said Nintendo was anti consumer, I said they have some improvement to do in terms of how they make decisions which of course affects us all. Only those who drink the Nintendo Kool aide hook line and sinker say that they are super awesome at everything Are you suggesting that more competition in the mobile space would somehow be bad for gamers?

Nobody would suggest any gaming company is perfect, and Nintendo do wind me up from time to time, but some of the tirades on here and other forums just go too far, as people do have a choice to opt into things or not.

Ahh, that's the problem for me though, I love Nintendo AAA games so I have little choice but to accept thier games as is. But I would love love love to see things like that great gameplay with better graphics as well as virtual console games not on subscription.
