When can we expect games being made exclusively for ps5/XSX without last gen support.

Predicts the worst decade for Sony starting 2022
When can we expect games being made without being gimped by support for the ps4/X1. I understand with shortages it's essential to support last generation but I wonder if this doesn't hamper most of this generation.

Yes things can be scaled but not everything. A game like Ratchet and Clank a rift apart cannot be scaled to the last generation consoles due to the instant loading taking advantage of the SSD for one example. No doubt games being designed from ground up on the ps5/Series X are going to be better and have higher fidelity rather than games that are factoring last gen in mind.

With Chip shortages lasting for years into the near future, I hope it isn't the case where few games are designed from the ground up for the PS5/XSX without catering the last generation.

Given the last Sony sales thread, I think we can expect some games to be cross gen for a while (but I don't know beyond GT7 if there is anything cross-gen). MS as far as I know is done with it (mainly because thy can supply games through xCloud).

Chip shortage is bitch plain and simple and if tsar try anything funny it could get much worse.

With most sales digital and no competition in sellers, I can see Sony transitioning with their next major game because they can control the price and keep selling them to new PS5 owners.. The ones they have announced already were supposed to come out earlier so it made more sense to do cross gen. Spider-Man MM is still selling a lot because it is a good first party game. I expect Horizon and GOW to be best sellers for a long time because once people do get their PS5s they will want all the top games.

I think GOW Ragnarok will be the last AAA sony first party game thats cross gen. If sony continue to do cross gen when MS isnt people are going to flip their shit.
No doubt the bean counters at sony are certainly questioning it though.
If starfield sells like 15million and a 2022/23 PS5 Exclusive sells 5million, they might change up their strategy.

With full forwards compatibility and an upgrade path costing an extra 10 dollars, I could see PS4 and PS4 Pro being supported for the rest of the PS5 generation and maybe even beyond.

Similar to PC gaming, as long as they feel they can scale the game down to work on a PS4, they're going to want to get those users.

It's easier for developers to spec out minimum requirements on a given platform like the base PS4 than it is to kind of guess what someone is going to run with PC hardware and create a minimum suggested requirement around that. With DRS, I think we're going to see a lot of this cross-gen garbage for years to come.

After the relatively poor sales of Demon's Souls and Rift Apart, I wouldn't expect any PS5 exclusives anytime soon.

You have a problem with there and their.

And 100 percent Sony is not going to abandon the PS4 until the PS5 has significantly more units sold. We asked for backward compatibility, and like everything we gamers ask for, it comes back to bite us.

There is now little reason do exclude previous gen consoles for publishers/developers. PS5 right now is like a PS4 Pro Plus.

You couldn't do this with PS3 and PS4. You had to simply create a new SKU or you would cut off the new userbase and your game might not have legs as a result... see God of War Ascension, Gran Turismo 6, e.t.c.

Now they can deliver the previous game at a higher framerate and resolution and maybe some dual sense features and you call it a day.

So much for this

I think the more likly outcome is they start releasing PS5 exclusives day one on PC too. But I agree the old way of doing things must be causing some debate over at sony.
The question is do they gain more from not having there games on PC? I dont think they would lose to many PS5 sales and I think they would make more money because of it.

Ive corrected the grammar mistake, thanks for pointing it out.

I think if sony wanted to do cross gen for so long they wouldn't have not spent so much on their SSD solution, and restricting devs to 8 jag cores and hdd as a base is contradicting there marketing as the premium and new gaming experience.
Also the fans certainly would not be happy.

Hopefully, I'd imagine, by late next year.

But, until supply stabilises to the point you can just stroll into a brick and mortar retailer or go online and pick up a current gen console, it is going to continue.

Put simply, at present, there is too much money on the table to ignore last gen customers.

They aren't bad games, and, at least according to Sony, the ps5 has actually sold millions...more even than previous generations did at the same stage in their life cycle (i.e a year in).

So, there's clearly a disconnect there somewhere.

When can they sell enough consoles to meet demand?

Sony WAS focusing on next-gen only games. We got Demon's Souls, Returnal, Ratchet and Clank, etc. I really believe Horizon, God of War and, definitely, GT7 started as next-gen only, but plans changed mid-development as it became clear it would be years before they could meet PS5 demand.

no you don't just retroactively decide to go last-gen as well late into the dev cycle. You can cut off last gen support, but tacking it on after the fact is extremely challenging

Stalker 2 , Starfield, Redfall, Forza 8, Shredders and Scorn are all Series X/s only for 2022.

Except, that's exactly what they did.
and from the VGC article GOW and Horizon were always planned to be cross-gen, not changed, which the guy I was replying to was wondering. Who knows how "recent" GT7 was decided to go cross gen. Maybe it was planned to be cross gen, then made PS5 only , and then back to cross gen. A racer building off GT:Sport is probably easier to push to PS4 than other games. Like R&C simply could not be back-ported half way through dev.

I still cant find a second ps5. Not until I can get my hands on that console, and xsx.

Well it depends on how far you are into the dev cycle, as well as what the game entails overall. For example, with a game that's relatively simple like Rocket League, you could "tack on" or "cut off" basically any which way you want in fairly short order. Something like MS Flight Simulator wouldn't be like that though.

But every indication is that, that's exactly what happened with those games. Once Sony realized how bad allocation and logistics would be for awhile. They changed direction in order to give content to all those stuck on last gen consoles.

Factions is almost certainly going to be cross-gen since TLOU2 was on PS4. MLB The Show will also be cross-gen for at least another year or two.

Yes, things like that will be crossgen. Im more talking about there 2023 exclusives if there new games from bend, insomniac, suckerpunch, bluepoint + others are cross gen its going to suck.

I think that is the logical thing. Sony was never a real powerhouse of system sellers on PS1 and PS2. They relied mainly on 3rd party.

I think people buy their consoles because they don't want to play on PC. I think opening up to PC just opens up sales for the most part.

Meh.....for me it doesn't make much difference, the type of games I mostly enjoy are not known for "high tech graphics".

Cross gen or not all I want is fun game with interesting aesthetics.
its not about graphics. but memory, how fast a game can stream etc.
That dramatically effects the game worlds

I think they put the SSD in because devs asked for it, but the realities on the ground today suggest cross gen is the way to maximize profits same with PC. Both will kill the SSD for us.

I'm not happy at all, but it is what it is.

I'm pretty sure even PS5 only game mostly gonna play like PS4 game but prettier graphics and more effects. Currently Ghostwire:Tokyo a game I'm very excited but from I can understand its not cross gen and yet is not exactly high tech but I couldn't care less because absolutely loooove the aesthetics they going for and in the end thats all that matters to me.

PC wouldn't. They could either have a lower base requirement for the first party games or require a gen 4 ssd and like 24gb ram on PC.

Sony are not doing there big games on cross gen for longer then the first 2yrs. They have talked about the importance of new generations and the technologies which will require games to be developed fundementally differently to last gen.

I'm hoping at the tail end of this year. Maybe first half of next year.

Sony/MS have collectively sold like 20-25m consoles already. It's not like there isn't a market for next-gen exclusives considering how few there are.

We have to remember that exclusivity early in a gen is artificial, a lot of games start development on last gen hardware. They make them exclusive to try and entice people to buy the new console.
However I to cant see why ghostwire cant be cross gen.

God of War Ragnarok disagrees with you, unless you think that will be the last cross gen game sony does.

Like I said I really dont care one way another make it zero difference to me. Most of my favourite games last gen weren't high tech graphics, not even close but still love them.

My biggest issue is 90% of time when people talk about high tech graphics, what they really mean is "realism" in order to be "immersed" but I dont play games for realism, far from it.

Probably someone in thread already mentioned this but you have Starfall coming out and that's only for pc and Series, so I guess that game isn't getting held back beyond Series S specs. And then you also have A Plague Tale 2, with no release on last gen.
