Games you've been trying to complete for awhile, but just can't seem to accomplish

Which game have you been trying to complete for awhile, but just haven't been able to?

This can be due to a number of reasons, such as perhaps the game is pretty long and you just can't seem to find the time to finish it, maybe you got to a point in the game where you just lost interest and keep doing the same each time you try to go back to it, a game on your backlog that you may have forgotten about because there's too many other things to play first, or some other reason.

How about it? Which game comes to mind? How long do you feel you've been trying to finish it? Why not done yet? :3

Yakuza 3 for me. I played through Yakuza 0, loved it and quickly played through Kiwami 1 & 2. Yakuza 3 is so hard to go back to though. I've even stopped playing and moved onto Yakuza 4 because I am just having such a hard time getting through it. I have gone back like 5 times and the main story is ok, but the gameplay is so bad and the side missions are not nearly as fun to me. Uggh, I still want to finish it before I finish 4 but that may not happen!

Guardians of the Galaxy. I don't think I have much further to go, but I'm having big trouble mustering up the motivation to keep playing at all. It's not bad, just so average. Very overrated IMO. Also pretty annoying with how everyone is CONSTANTLY chattering. And since I don't want to miss anything I feel like I can't keep going until they shut up, because if you do their lines just get cut off.

It was Yakuza 3 for me too. I just ended up watching recaps/explanations for Y3, Y4 & Y5 on Youtube and skipped to Y6. I was actually enjoying 3, don't think it deserves the flack it gets as being the 'weakest Yakuza game'

Demon Souls Remake.

Didn't play the original, started the Remake but dropped it quite early because I wasn't ready to tackle another souls game at the time. Kind wanna play it but don't wanna drain myself playing it like I did with Sekiro.

I know it's a shame.

AC Odyssey and Middle-earth Shadow of War.

I like both, but they're just too long/repetitive and I bought the complete editions, so there's a shit ton of dlc to play too. :messenger_sad_relieved:

Good idea for a thread! Actual game talk would you believe it!

Currently for me it is the Hitman trilogy. I think I enjoy it, but it gets very repetitive. On intermediate difficulty, it is pretty easy to just follow the game events and get the job done. It’s ok, but can get boring quick. I switched it up to master, but the 1 save really gets annoying. There’s only so many times I can replay the same section.

I still want to finish it, but right now I’ve just parked it.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth for me. I love the game, the characters, the aesthetic, everything. But the bosses have punishingly brutal difficulty and I keep getting my ass kicked over and over again. I grind for an hour or so to level up, then try again and can usually overcome them. I'm towards the end of the game now (I believe, based on the achievements) but it's just so hard for me to keep going though that same cycle.

Part of the problem is that it's got this Ikaruga shump thing going on, and I suck at it.

Tales of Arise. Dropped it 10 hours in, got back to it a few months later, then dropped it another 20 hours in. It’s not bad per say, just overhyped for me. The graphics increase are nice but the world actually feels like there’s less to do in compared to prior games. And the cast and story are mid. This is coming off of Berseria, which not only told a more compelling, darker story, but also gave its cast way more depth beyond just their basic personalities and motivations (mainly due to Berseria’s skits, whereas Arise’s skits focus entirely on just reiterating story/personality elements covered in the main game. Also, boo on the new skit design. Yes, I love my costume customization, but I never wanted it in skits if it meant sacrificing the expressive character portraits).

Doesn’t help I hear Arise’s second half compared to Xenogears Disc 2, ouch. I’ll finish it one day but considering the only Tales game I never bothered to finish was Xillia 2 (a blank slate MC who barely has any dialogue options, who asked for this? Not to mention re-using 80+% of the environments from Xillia 1), it’s pretty disappointing.

Right now I’d rank the Tales games I’ve played:

9/10 - Abyss, Berseria, Vesperia, Symphonia
8/10 - Graces F
7.5/10 - Xillia
7/10 - Zesteria
6/10 - Arise
4/10 - Xillia 2

Any CRPG. They really appeal to me and are fun for a few hours, but in the end I always end up stuck, frustrated or just bored.

Have you tried Divinity: Original Sin 2? It’s like a CRPG but I found it to be a bit less frustrating compared to say Pillars of Eternity. Early game can be rough as I was under leveled compared to potential encounters you might run into (so DEFINITELY rotate your saves) but it didn’t take too long before I was in a better spot and got the flow of combat better. Might still not be for you but just wanted to mention it just in case.

Berseria is one of the worst Tales games ever, along with Zesteria which you should have played before hand but is missing from this list.... This list is so illogical.

I forgot to list Zesteria, would rank it slightly below Xillia.

Also, illogical? It’s called having different opinions, and I know on gamefaqs plenty of people love Berseria.

I've been trying to complete GTA V story mode since it's launch on PS3. I've owned the game on like 4 different consoles. I just cannot get into it.

Also Persona 5. I bought it when it first came out, completed the first palace then stopped playing. Then I got Persona 5 Royal when it released and have been playing it off and on since then. About 100 hours in and I've enjoyed it, but I just want it to end.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Been playing off and on since it came out. I'm in the final area on my way to the final boss(es?). Why haven't I just done it yet? Good question...I don't know... I'll probably return at some pount this year and hopefully finish it.

Bruh I have been restarting Twilight Princess on and off since 2006. Like for whatever reason I leave the game too long and when I return I start from scratch. I told myself my last attempt was going to be the final one...

but I left it for a year... went to pick it back up instead of restarting... AND DELETED MY SAVE FILE BY ACCIDENT!!!!

I'm not going to let it beat me.

In other news I'm finding it hard to stick to any given game at the moment. Between life sapping my free time I find it difficult to unwind with the games I enjoy because I feel I don't have the time to fully immerse myself. I don't want to play through Psychonauts an hour here and an hour there when I get a spare moment whilst I'm feeling mentally drained from the world's bullshit. It's killing me at the moment.

I know these feels even down to the twilight princess start and quits

I’m struggling with FF7 remake. I don’t like dumb quests. If I wanted cutesy Japanese dialogue I think persona does it better. Looks good though.

I am an adult most if the time. Wish fulfillment alone does not do it for me. I don't beat games unless compelled to by the story. I beat Fallen Order in one go, Last Of Us I and II, God of War, the same.

Open world games are repetitive and the narrative design gets spread too thin. That or, with FromSoftware for example, the game is just too damned epic.

I still haven't beat Dark Souls (stopped at that beautiful wolf with the sword in her mouth, didn't want to kill it) nor BloodBorne ( the lunar change blew my mind but I am having trouble with another hunter going bad and kicking my a$$).

Bethesda games aren't really producing good narrative arcs imo. They tend to let players feel all powerful and make every choice they want but that's not really a good story is it?

King Arthur is betrayed by his wife and best friend, Luke's arrogance loses him a hand after finding out his Dad is basically head of the Gestapo, Shaka Zulu is overwhelmed by superior technology. I am ranting now but compelling stories mix in bad stuff to balance out wish fulfillment.

First time I played Darksiders 1: the portal tower dungeon at the end did my head in. Took a 6 month break.

Witcher 3. After finishing Velen and Novigrad, took a 1-3 months break when I saw how huge Skellige was.

Far Cry 2 AND 3. Took breaks when I saw I only finished THE FIRST of two maps.

Gothic 2: I always took breaks on this one, due to how much bigger scale than Gothic 1 it was.

Shadow of Mordor: I forced myself to finish the campaign, forced even harder to finish the 1st of two DLC campaigns. Couldn't be bothered about the 2nd one.

Assassin's Creed Origins: kind of a slog to finish the game. Was curious about 1st DLC, but it was also boring. 2nd DLC was a major slog.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey: I like it vastly more than Origins, but finishing it is also a slog, especially if you want to do every single quest. There is 1 side quest I didn't do. I stopped searching for rune loot because I already had enough. I consider BOTH DLC campaigns a slog.

STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl: as great a game it is, it's a huge time sink. Needed a break to be able to finish it.

That's it so far, from all I've played.

Batman Arkham Knight... I spent a good part of last year saying I’ll complete de story mode but I just can’t... in general cold and excessively serious tone in western games have me postponing some games I’d like to start, like doom eternal. In case of Batman I have up,I just got too bored of trying and just uninstalled it

I personally loved that the narrative took the forefront and the fat around the edges was trimmed. It was the only Tales game I didn't mind the skits. It had a nice manga like feel to it. I'm way over tropey anime drama. Though I still felt there were some areas where they popped up too frequently and character dialog was dragged out unnecessarily with some npcs.
Still, the only major negative to me was the early grind, which seems to be an attempt to sell the faster XP DLC. The second half (more like the third act) was a bit rushed and a one shot to the ending, though they didn't botch it as hard as the end of FF15.

Heh. I tried it on XBOX game pass expecting to at least be able to finish it because I love most well-made metrovanias, but it was actually the music that did it for me. How a Japanese game can have music that bad blows my mind. Like if you asked me to name a game with worse music off the top of my head, I don't think I could. For me music is key for action and RPG games.

This applies to soo many games for me.. uh... It's more about games i haven't been able to start than finish... Divinity original sin 2, it's just not close enough to BG for me, and control, it's intimidatingly good

But ya I recall dying several times during some of those later bosses, and the last area. Great game though.

As someone who is currently playing Tales of Arise, I couldn't disagree more. However, it's my first Tales of game, so I can't compare it to previous titles.

Battle system is pretty much hands on and solid in my opinion, plays a lot like a Kingdom Hearts for example. Once you get the second deck of arts, chaining combos is extremely satisfying.

Game needs you to grind a bit in order to not get insta nuked by bosses.

Cast is extremely likeable and so far the story is interesting. I'm on my way to the 4th city and pace is fine.

Sub-quests are typical RPG - Defeat this, collect that. Could have more variety in that regard though.

AC Valhalla. I kept looking at the maps and got discouraged as I didn’t think i’d be able to properly finish the game (i.e. exploring, side missions). I finally finished it, but shelved most of the side quests because it was just way too much.

Thanks for the recommendation man, but the thing is I've already put like 40 hours on that game before dropping it. I remember having fun, but then I found myself in some kind of cave in which my party members were separated from one another. Was having a lot of trouble there and decided to drop it.

Might come back tho, because I was really liking the combat system of that game.

I've got a couple of games like that. Ff12 zodiac age is one I've been playing on and off for a few years now. I like it but I keep getting distracted by other games. A more recent one would be guardians of the galaxy, but that has more to do with me just finding the game to be very mediocre.

Hyped as fuck for Elden Ring. Yet I still have to play Demons Souls on PS5. Only killed 2 bosses, but for whatever reason I can’t really get into it like I could with every single FromSoft game. No clue why.

I was actually a bit dismayed when a reviewer on youtube stated Kowloon High School Chronicle clocked him at 70 hours, and his Switch at 80 hours. I love what I've played of that game, but 70 to 80 hours might make that a tall task.

Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods Part II.

I left the game too long. I became rusty, I was getting so raped... I had to take a break even though I absolutely love the game.

I’ve installed Death Stranding three different times and said to myself “dude I love this game” each time …. but I’ve also uninstalled it three times. Can’t even put my finger on why I don’t like it but I can’t ignore that I’ve uninstalled it three times. Enough already. Not installing again. Stg I think it’s a 8/10 though haha.

Only other one that comes to mind is RDR2, where the biggest reason I don’t want to continue is because the download is hyyyuuuuuge and if already uninstalled it several times. No more. Just gonna let it go and wait for the next gen patch in 2025.
