After Nintendo just announced a whopping 48 remastered courses for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, it got me thinking that they are practically remastering every worthy track for MK8. Will they just re-release them as new cups in MK9? Of course not!

Mario Kart 9 will have tons of new tracks, why? Because they will be based on new characters and franchises! Whatever the new gimmick is, this game will include Zelda, Star Fox, F Zero, Animal Crossing, Metroid, Donkey Kong, Fire Emblem, Splatoon, Kirby, etc. Mario Kart 8 DLC was just the beginning, and it seems like they are going this direction.

It also makes sense. With Smash Bros over, Mario Kart is the only huge franchise left where they can make a new huge cross over and milk it. They will begin with Nintendo franchises and move over third party collaborations. The possibilities are endless.

The only thing missing is the ITEMS also being based on different characters and franchises, which would be amazing! Items in Mario Kart are great, some others not so much, and others useless (coins), but they are always the same. With items based on different characters we could get a hook shot from Zelda, Lasers from Star Fox, Ink splash from Splatoon (which you could go under to avoid being hit), etc.

The only downside I see about all this, is that we will have to wait for at least 2023 since MK8 new tracks are going to be released until then, which means no new MK until they're done.

This is my prediction! I just can't see Nintendo not taking advantage of this.

I think Mario Kart should stick fairly close to formula and focus on optimizing that formula.

The other opportunity that I feel is right there is a Diddy Kong Racing sequel. DKR successfully distanced itself from Mario Kart by adding boss fights, a hub world, secret levels, airplanes and whatnot to kart racing really well. I feel like nintendo could have 2 epic kart racing franchises both doing different things if they wanted. That could kind of fit into your smash kart idea. It wouldn't strictly need to be branded as diddy kong or donkey kong racing, obviously. It could be called Nintendo kart or smash racing or whatever, but diddy kong already found the template for a great, different style of kart racer.

Yeah, I don’t want the series to become 90% non-Mario because it’s called Mario Kart, but if the MK8 DLC was an indication I doubt we’ve seen the last of guest drivers and courses which is fine by me. I say as long as future games are at least roughly 80% Mario cast/courses with the remainder being guest drivers and courses, that will be okay with me.

I'm something of a games critic myself.

I agree with 80% Mario characters would be enough Mario for me to still feel like it's Mario Kart. I don't mind some cameos unless it's Funky Kong. But Mario Kart has become a really big thing, so you don't wanna mess around with it too much. There's room for 2 really big, really different nintendo kart racing games, and the blueprint DKR provides to expand on is great.

I'd love a new F-Zero or GX remaster. But Mario Kart could use the variety afforded with the other Nintendo IPs (Splatoon, F-Zero, Zelda, etc.)

This suggestion always comes up from fans and I still hate it. Even having Link as DLC was a bit weird and unnecessary. Keep it mushroom kingdom.

Agree. MK8 practically already is what OP is describing. Also - Smash Bros is going to continue are you insane.

Also agreed on adventure mode. DIndy has the best single player experience STILL because of it.
