Theory: The Switch Pro is already here and its Cloud Streaming

Whether it was intentional or due to the chip shortage, streaming on the Switch is the closest thing to a Pro model that can run games the base Switch cannot natively. Resident Evil 7 was released on Switch via streaming all the way back in 2018. Physical editions of Switch games already release with a banner saying "SD Card and Internet Connection Required". Always preferred physical to digital/streaming myself so its sad if it is this.

I think a lot of it depends on how well the current streaming options on Switch (Hitman, Control, Kingdom Hearts, etc.) are performing both here and in Japan. I'm a physical game buyer myself, so I'd be saddened if your theory is true, but there definitely is something to what you're saying. Nintendo has never been one for their 1:1 online gameplay though, so who knows how successful it will be, or will ever be.

Doesn't this take away the main selling point of the Switch? How can you stream these games if you're somewhere without an internet connection, say on the train, in the car or in a hospital waiting room etc.

Cloud streaming is a horrendous way to game.

Like it's fucking terrible even when you have a good connection. Artifacts, lag, framerates drop down zero at points.

I'd rather play games natively on a potato like the Switch.

I'll get a Steambox instead.

The main selling point is that you can both play as a handheld and as a home console with one device.

Thanks for pointing out that its streamed games offering smashes the "it's only a handheld " view to smithereens. These are games that can't be played reliably on the go.

Maybe viable for third parties if Nintendo hadn’t gimped the wireless and Ethernet connections on the Switch. I have 350mbs fibre and the Switch gets 50-70mbs wireless and even less through Ethernet. They need to sort this in the successor.

My smartphone with Xcloud can run Forza Horizon5. My smartphone is not a XBOX.

I wouldn't pay more than 100€ for a mere streaming device.

I tried the Guardians of the Galaxy streaming demo on my oled and even with the fastest internet money can buy it was a pretty shitty experience due to lag and resolution. It’s too inconsistent. For now.

Good connectivity is needed for it. So I already own the switch pro?

OP your spot on, ive been experimenting with streaming games lately.
Up to 6 months ago it wasn't really that viable, but it has improved x10 due to the pandemic and its got to the point now where I think it will be the future of gaming.

Small payment fee to access top of the line graphics and yes performance...its coming, sooner rather than later.

That might be the stupidest thing I've ever read on the subject of the fabled Switch Pro and that's no small feat.

Can it stream in 4k? If not then useless.
I don't think there's any technical limitation why it couldn't stream in 4K (hell, a Chromecast can stream 4K and it's hardly above a toaster when it comes to processing power), but currently the streaming games on Switch are...

...not good. That's not a limitation of the technology itself, but clearly zero effort has been put into at least those versions.

I mean, anything related to Nintendo and the internet is never a good match. Nintendo act like the internet and online is some sort of evil and should be treated like a controlled substance.

They love making everything so difficult and clunky, but even after you jump through all their stuck in the past loops, their online performs like a fully bruised banana.
