Update regarding Horizon Forbidden West (PS4 versions now have entitlement to free PS5 upgrade, other games will have $10 upgrade fee)

Just reminding anybody who hasn't already bought the knowledgeable version, remember the PS4 version is $10/£10 cheaper than the PS5 version and as this thread explains, it has a free upgrade to the PS5 version which makes it $10/£10 cheaper than directly buying the PS5 version.
The only downside with doing it this way is the same as any PS4 game that has a $10/£10 PS4 to PS5 upgrade path, is that the upgrades themselves don't go live until the game releases that means your download options are to buy the PS5 download and get to download early prior to launch or save the $10/£10 but download the game when it goes live.
I don't think the PS4 version of the game has ever appeared on the PS5 Store which is pretty crappy if you don't know that the upgrade is now free so you'll need to buy the PS4 from the website or on your PS4.

They still have them listed separately. $59.99 for the PS4 version and $69.99 for the PS4/PS5 versions.

Not checked on my Japanese account so can't comment on how it listed there.

it says there on your screenshot ps4 ps5 lol
I've never suggested otherwise, what I pointed out was that that they are listed separately and the prices are different depending on which you buy. Although both now mention PS4/PS5 in the platform box, the main title for the version on the right is still Horizon Forbidden West (PS4) while the centre is listed as Horizon Forbidden West PS5 & PS4 which is essentially how the titles were announced.
If you check the webpage without my pre-order showing, you can see that the version on the left is $59.99 while the centre listing is $69.99 even though they contain exactly the same content. The issue with the listing is that part of the description refers to what was announced while other parts of it refer the amended details where they changed it to a free upgrade for everybody. again, it's the same on the UK store.
It makes nabsolutely ao difference to me which version people choose to buy or even if they don;t buy any but as we can tell from the two replies to my post, it's not clear to everybody how this is being dealt with, in particularly for people who may buy it on the PS5 console as the cheaper $59.99 option is not even listed if you look on the console.

oh yeah that, i fully agree with you, i get that it would confuse a lot of people. i thought you were saying the ''$60'' ps5 version was missing.

I just don't feel that they've been as clear as they could have been, possibly intentionally or possibly not, I don't know. That non essential $10/£10 would be a hell of a bonus for them if you look at how many sales the original game had, over 10 million copies in a year according to wiki. You would hope that on places like this would know but how many people will just buy the game on their PS5 because if you don't know there's not much reason not to do that.
I think it doesn't help that they've half updated the details on the web store listing as it contradicts itself.
As I said, I think the potential downside is that people who do it this way will likely just have to wait until launch day to start downloading because that's always been when upgrades have gone live.
Anyway, hopefully it will save a few people a bit of money if they see my post.

yep to be fair i was expecting to just find listed as ps4, but when i saw ps4 and ps5 today. i thought they sorted. but yeah your concern is valid. they should just change the price and be done with it

$70 price is still unjustified in my opinion but good on them for making it right. I really only expected them to simply make a $10 upgrade path. Them giving it away for free is a nice bonus.

By saying this i don't mean they are bad games... don't mean it that way but are $60 for any switch games justified? People pay it and they sell a lot. Just think for a moment how much is the budget for this game or any other PS exclusive vs the budget of any Switch game?

We don't really know the budgets of a lot of switch games but I would assume they aren't nearly as high as Horizon, I see your point there but it's a bit of a straw man argument.

My issue is not with the budgets though.

It's the fact that most games in the modern era ship with more sources of revenue than the initial purchase. The MTX and services portion of games have become a major source of revenue and yet they still have upped the price.

Sony is making more money on games than every before, just a fact, and they decided to up the price simply because they can. Am I mad at them for making more money? No. But they haven't changed anything about the product in a significant way that justifies an increase in my eyes.

Forbidden West doesn't have any of those additional sources of revenue so I don't see your point there

When the game began to be sold for $60? How much money are those $60 today? I don't buy games for $60 anymore... even less for $70. Unless i want the game so much at launch.

Do I have to download the game twice and go through any other hoops/complications to upgrade from PS4 -> PS5? Seems like it might be worth it just to pay the extra $10 and put the disc in and play right away on PS5.

This is my thought as well. Anyone know how the process will work?

I'm talking about the entirety of Sony. They are making more money than ever and charge more for the same products. They have games that have MTX from first and third party. It all goes into the same pool.

If they want to start this push and pull of some games being $70 because they have no MTX and others being $60 because they do at least it would make some sense.

Even still, they are charging $10 more for PS5 versions of games for what? There is nothing about Horizon that warrants a $10 increase in price that I can see. Is it for a higher frame rate and resolution? Then why didn't they charge more for pro versions of games?

If they want to cite development costs rising, inflation, etc then why aren't PS4 versions $70?

Sorry I'm not following what you're asking here.

X product brings in more money so we don't need to charge much for Y product doesn't really make much sense

The point is to introduce higher prices gradually. You're not paying an extra $10 because it's next-gen. They're using next-gen as a means to get people accustomed to the higher prices.

Why doesn't it make sense? Makes perfect sense to me. If it costs more to develop then why wouldn't you charge more?

And that's exactly my point. They are using PS5 to adopt higher prices simply because they can. Like I said, I am not mad at them but as a playstation customer I'm not seeing any real justification to why prices went up. The product hasn't changed.

Eh? I'm saying not increasing the price for Forbidden West because Factions 2 has additional sources of revenue doesn't make sense.

The justification is inflation, rising costs etc. And more importantly growth. Companies change the prices all the time regardless of whether said producrs/services actually change. We're just not accustomed to it happening in this industry

The price of games have been $60 since 2006. I'm amazed that base price has lasted so long frankly.

Sony is being so shady about this. It’s annoying.

As for you guys talking price, the reasons probably why it's been the same forever is because:

1. Gamers are conditioned at certain prices like $60 games and $400 systems, so they expect it forever

2. Game makers make so much money off DLC and mtx, they make big profits on the backend. Also, by making the game cheaper it helps build more users

Gaming is just one of those industries where prices stick. Bananas are another one. Theyve been 59 or 69 cents per lb here (depending on the store) for probably 20 years. Bread barely budges too. A lot of them have the same regular price of around $3 and go on deal for $2 for ages. Beer hasnt budged either from what I've noticed. Whether it's a 12 or 24 pack, seems pretty much the same.

It'd be nice if I could actually buy a PS5 at retail price to play the game on. Out of stock everywhere at the moment.

That's because xbox next gen titles don't have as many upgradable components.

In the example, Horizon, they literally have more foliage, and more coral and underwater is more detailed - i expect God of War will be like that too, not sure what GT will bring in that regard tho.

its not just and FPS or res boost like most Xbox games.

That's also why they are making all their new games (xbox) exclusive to next gen so they can avoid what sony is doing. It's easy to do when you have half the user base Sony has on last gen consoles.

So $10 for extra foliage huh? What type of grass are they selling? 😂

Id you want to get into blanket pricing we can but either I'm not understanding what you're saying or vice versa.

Growth is already being achieved as I previously stated via new avenues of revenue. They were making more money than ever without raising the sticker price but suddenly now it's needed for growth?

Again, I am not mad at don't but I fail to see any justification for a raise in prices. If it is indeed inflation, costs etc then the PS4 versions should be $70 as well.

In the 360 and ps3 era the games were $60. Adjusted for inflation, $60.00 in 2005 is equal to $87.90 in 2022. $60.00 in 2012 is equal to $74.13 in 2022.
Lucky me. We pay 80-90usd for ps5 games in Poland.
Lol I wish games were 70usd.

Anyway - I preordered ps5 version as I want this version archived on a disk. I like to own my games and have them somewhat playable even fully offline

I'm still trying to figure out how to get the PS5 version of God of War.
I should have just kept the disc I was given at Christmas as it was marked PS5 clearly on the cover of the disk.. I'm all digital so I traded it in for some money online code cards.
The store has no mention of God of War for the PS5, Only PS4.

Now that money will be spent digital of Horizon forbidden West instead.

You’re misremembering, there never has been a PS5 version of God of War, only PS4.

It is PS5 aware and gives 60fps at reconstructed 4k.

While I get that they are basically implementing an idiot tax does anyone else feel a potential shitstorm coming when the people who pay 70 start requesting refunds after the game is released. I dont know, I just feel like this shit is about to end badly and Sony is trying to pull a fast one for a few unnecessary bucks

Still kinda afraid to get the digital ps4 version hoping for the free upgrade. I'm waiting for launch to make sure it'll actually work.
