Sony's Jim Ryan to GameIndustry.biz: "We are starting to go multiplatform"

I'm a massive massive fan of Gamepass, and actually switched to the Xbox this gen because of it. But I disagree that PS should make a better competing service to go up against it. That is not a battle Sony can win. In these types of services content is king and MS already has a ton of studios now.

I think the Bungie purchase is really crap and boring... But if they have expertise is GAAS area, then I could understand why Sony bought them. That's the direction they seem to be going because that's where they can see masking the most money (for them)
If Sony opts to not bring a Game Pass competitor to market, I think Sony will quickly find itself in a position where Xbox + Game Pass is not only cheaper, but delivering more high quality games on a regular basis. In that scenario, it won't take long before Sony's fan base will simply be whittled away by the sheer breadth of what Microsoft is trying to build. Why buy a PS5 and two games when I can get Xbox + Game Pass for a year and have more games than I'll know what to do with? And those games have cross-platform support with PC without a separate purchase. Because Sony have TLOU: Factions? Or Bungie's next poorly managed GaaS? I think Sony are not reading the room correctly, and risk being left behind, if they're not trying to pull together their own Game Pass subscription.

Ok man. So I guess in your world everything is static and nothing changes. All is in the future as it was in the past. My world doesn't work like that so I see things differently.
When did hardware sales dry up? Tell me WHY they're giving up.

Console hardware is selling at a higher pace than it ever has.

We already knew Playstation was multiplatform. They put out a streaming service on PC years ago.

Jimbo states the obvious, and now people think they're quitting the console business entirely?

you know exactly who and why they are hoping this happens.

The push towards Gamepass vs Spartacus and games as a service begins. The Bungie purchase makes more sense in this context.

You DO realize the purpose of the PlayStation and Xbox has never been making money off of console sales, right? It's the cut they get from every game sold on their platform and cut of every digital content purchase made on the platform.
finally people realizing that's box sales aren't the end game....FINALLY they waking up...gosh
You guys do realize the more consoles sold equals more revenue from digital content right?

I agree there will be more consoles, but this isn't confirmation. These companies R&D tons of stuff that never sees the light of day.
Not everyone is going to buy a gaming PC and not everyone will have the bandwidth to stream. At least not for a while. There's still a need for a cost effective box that gives people access to games. There will be consoles, but they're just a way to give people access to games.

Sony is probably looking for ways to bring in revenue for games faster. Having to build the install base to drive their required attach rate for games to be profitable takes time and is hard work. People are crying because Sony is doing cross gen. Releasing on PC day and date with PS5 has the potential to get them the return on investment faster. Certainly they're watching to see how well it works for Microsoft. I think we're passing the point where number of consoles sold is the most important metric.

Before that it was PlayStation wanting cross-play and Microsoft blocking it. Cross-play hurts the market leader and benefits the other.
is true but to equalize the game....everyone should admit and let it go. that's the right way competition need to be done on the goodness of the offer not preventing your rival from improving

I think this is the biggest worry for the future. That cost effective box is going to be harder and harder to find/make in the future. It's going to be expensive powerful or cheap potato.
OR take your time with scraps found online to build your own. Someone earlier in the thread mentioned the death of PC gaming and I think they are correct.

This is the one reason Sony might NOT leave the console business. As you say, people are still gonna need something to play the games on, and for many millions of gamers that does not mean buying a PC. But it doesn't necessarily have to be Sony making those consoles anymore. And even if they do, they're probably gonna get more expensive. Still more affordable than a proper gaming PC, but they're gonna stop taking a loss on them if driving console sales is no longer a priority. It's gonna be more like buying a Sony TV, which they're most certainly not taking a loss on lol.

IKR? God Damn I sure won't have fun playing GOW 3 knowing PC players can too! I mean no one really likes games right? It's all about knowing you're better than everyone else, right??????!!!

Not in the long game and when it comes to maximizing profits. Consoles only sell so much and with the budgets increasing each generation you make more money the more more platforms your on. Spider-Man can sell 10 million on ps5 a million or two on PC years after it comes out. It would probably be a much bigger number on PC if it were to release day and date. Eventually Sony will test that theory out.

This is what I was mentioning earlier. Sony is different now and they are trying to go multi platform as quickly as possible.
the time of the exclusive console is over.
Well then the time of the console is over? Exclusive games/exclusive features sell consoles. Period.

I dont need to buy games day 1, and if I do I see no negative to getting on PC, whenever a PC version drops it will no doubt be the season pass dlc included GOTY/Definitive Ed/Director's Cut; and have mods, probably. Plus on PC id be getting PC/XB/PS exclusives as well.

you still not getting it? Sony as Microsoft will not care if you buy it or not ..what important is that you by the games, that's where the true money are. Someone else will choose to buy and play on console...other will play on PC and console ..etc etc....options are good

Not one like on the op from usual suspects. But they'd be dropping "🔥🤣👍" if it was Xbox lol.

Interesting turn of events we have. Day one pc launch is what I make of this tho, nothing more.... maybe even switch ports.

This may be the last console generation.

Please put some real effort into making PlayStation on PC a thing and not just the games existing on PC.

PS/PC day and date coming soon to all Sony franchises.

Jim can smell the money
Multiplayer games for sure. That has been Sony plan for years. But Im sure they will keep milking the single player games the way they do, by exauting them in Playstation consoles, then when the games has no more legs, porting it to PC at full price to get some more mileage.

I wouldn't be surprised if Switch starts being treated as PC now. Switch, like PC, is different enough from PlayStation and Xbox that Sony and Microsoft may feel comfortable releasing some of their games on that platform.

We've already seen a bit of this. Minecraft is hugely successful on Switch. Microsoft chose to release both Ori games on Switch. The Show '22 is also going to Switch, although I don't believe that was Sony's decision.

I agree, in the end, you will only need 2 platforms, PC and Nintendo system.

Next gen Switch will get Sony and MS first parties.
