Sonys upcoming Multiplayer Games have the ability to take them to the next level

It seems like maybe Sony new of the loss of Call of Duty because since the past year they’ve been signing exclusive partnerships with studio heads known for their multiplayer titles. Not only that but it seems like their big 1st party studios are also all working on multiplayer titles. It seems like this generation is gonna be all about playstation studios really expanding their portfolio of games beyond what they have become known for, the action adventure, open world, cinematic style games.

It seems like they will at least be applying that cinematic and polished style to their multiplayer efforts and if they’re as good as their single player games sony is gonna be in a great position by mid gen.

  • Naughty Dog’s Multiplayer - stand alone spinoff game from TLOU2 directed by Anthony Newman. Said to be a cinematic multiplayer experience
  • Haven Studios game - Led by Jade Raymond, the game being developed for PlayStation may have as its main highlight the multiplayer feature and will focus on keeping the audience engaged in the game by "live service"
  • Firewalks Multiplayer shooter - This game will probably be the first out, it was fully playable as of last March. This game is being led by Ryan Ellis, ex-creative director for Destiny
  • Deviation Games - recent job listing states, “We are looking for a skilled Senior Game Designer who’s written and scripted quest and mission content in AAA single-player or multiplayer RPGs/Action/story games. Ideally, someone who has worked in games for several years, executed on early stage rapid development and worked on co-op multiplayer games.” - Deviation Games was set up in November 2019 by former Treyarch Studios developers Dave Anthony and Jason Blundell, both of whom played a key role in the success of the Call of Duty: Black Ops series.
Blundell, one of the chief creators of Call of Duty's popular zombies mode
  • Firesprite Studios -Sonys newest Studio, we know they’re working on Twisted Metal, they may possibly be working on another AAA multiplayer shooter
  • Guerrilla Games - they are working on a multiplayer shooter led by Rainbow Six Seige Director Simon Larouche. This game has been in production since 2018
We also know Insomniac have another multiplayer game in production. We also know Illfonic (Predator Hunting Grounds) are working on a Ghost Busters game. There’s also Arrowhead studios who have been working on a AAA 3rd person version Helldivers 2 according to the GeForce leak and their blogpost about it.

There’s at least 10 multiplayer games in production over at SIE and they seem to be investing a lot of money into them. I see Sony having a good stable of single player, multiplayer, VR, and mobile games this gen. It’s gonna be an exciting time for playstation fans

there's not a single Sony MP game that ever rocked the boat in any way since the PS2... so I doubt that this will be big hits until I see it

Sony didn’t really hit their 1st party dev stride until the late ps3 generation and since then they haven’t really put a lot of multiplayer titles out, especially not any with a significant budget.

I think Sony in 2022 is an entirely different beast than the mid 2000’s

Naughty Dogs the only one who’s released multiplayer aspects before and they where pay to win trash.

Sony has never delivered a good multiplayer game. Or a game that engages people longer than 10 hours outside of GT.
Uhh, it's still fast and easy to find a match on TLOU MP. People are still uploading videos and asking for multiplayer to this day. Many people have a 999 rating online, which means they have been playing for years.

Many results within the past month.

Theyre just playing catch up with mp. Its not even about cod its about all the possible mtx money and "engagement" bragging rights that come with mp games.

Does Sony really need to replace Call of Duty with some other game? Would Call of Duty players give up Call of Duty and stay on PlayStation for a new Sony multiplayer game? I think the answer to both is no.

The real question is whether Sony needs a shooter to replace this one. No matter what they build it won't be the same so the better play is probably to just focus on more new IP of the kind that only Sony is making these days and let the chips fall where they may with the loss of CoD.

Sony has entrenched itself completely into the cinematic singleplayer genre. There's zero reason to believe any of their first party devs are capable of releasing a decent multiplayer game.

If Sony announced one of their studios was working on a new story driven singleplayer title, then there's every reason to believe it will be a decent game. If it's multiplayer? Yeah, they need to prove they're capable first before anyone gets excited. They've failed on just about every attempt they've tried.

I'd probably wait until I had a title, or concept art or even general game concept before declaring something like this, but what do I know? 🤷‍♂️

I guess if i had to decide which one I think will be best, it has to be multiplayer shooter #3.

Microsoft confirmed they were planning on publishing the game on PlayStation still. Seriously what the hell is wrong with everyone?
Sony invests alot on Call of Duty, and gets great returns. COD might be dead to now though.

This forces Sony to look else where for a strategic partner. No more Call of Duty front and center, no more multi-million deals for 1 year exclusive DLC, and best of all Sony will promote competition.

I didn't realize any of that. Can you please post some links with information on the deals Sony has made regarding call of duty games and the returns from those deals?

Dat ass tho....

Your point is fair, but I'm trying to say that i get enough from the system even without multiplayer
Ok? Think the point of the thread is if COD does end up leaving PS, then SONY have a huge hole to fill regards to multiplayer titles, for the sake of PS+ subs.

The fact that you posted that re-enforces this view.

I don't see how what i posted "proves" a thing about sony?

Anyway my interpretation of the thread title was "hey everyone who worries xbox has the upper hand, our multiplayer might be better than xbox multiplayer this year"

And i posted to say i don't need that kind of spin

And anyway, this thread is about "this year", and those shitty titles you mentioned are apparently "committed" through 2023, so i guess you're the one who has.. proven ... Something? This is so stupid...

The mods must be taking it easy on console warring again not to roll you for saying "copium: the thread" and all that, phew!

You are happy playing mostly single player games, you said that yourself? that doesn't sell PS+ subs.

Take a breath, why so defensive? jesus this place, can we not have a discussion?

Sony and multiplayer they don't sound good in the same sentence. At least that's the way it has been for the past 15+ years and this is what you pay if you evaluate the acquisition of your studios only by paying attention to their ability to churn out the so-called "cinematic narrative third person action games" . I wait before judging, but honestly I don't expect anything valuable

Well technically only 2 on that list are first party. The rest are paid partnerships.

Sony might have a MP problem, as they are known, rightly so, for their single player experiences. You can't see the problem there? hence the thread. What say you?

Kudos for squeezing something coherent out.

As I've already said, I've no chips in that game, and Sony dominates market share on the back of a generation of superior SP games, so in my opinion MP is gravy. So i just came here to post my take, that this means little to me. Didn't realise a prowler would zero in on me.

Background:

I have PS+ for discounts and cloud saving, for the record. I owned an xbox and turned my back on their offerings because i found them to be thin on the ground. For me at least PS is on rock solid foundations, the only thing that might bring me back to Xbox would be for the Bethesda titles to be as good as Morrowind and Oblivion were, for me, but in that case I'll get them for my computer. So, again, I didn't really find this thread to be necessary, as a PS owner.

Thats exactly what i said in the first place? Maybe i wasn't clear, sorry. ( edit just re-read my post nope, i said exactly the same thing 3 times.)

Like Titanfall (awesome game) COD, and Halo and Goldeneye before them, its like lightening in a bottle to make that something special, not only that it has to stick as well. Again see Titanfall.

Obviously there are more, but its just not that easy, although they have a good track record with there other stuff so who knows? Hopefully they make a hit, more decent games on the market the better.

Sony management of whatever multiplayer has been less than mediocre the only exception is probably GT. Sony has been on all the front pages of the industry outlets to shut down servers prematurely, lose personal data, make backups between generations incompatible....this is to add to the inconsistency of the titles developed by their devs. I am not saying that we should not hope for an improvement but as for Microsoft it will take time to improve in single player the same goes for Sony with multiplayer ... And since most of the projects are outsourced I don't even expect their first party quality. As i said I'll wait and see
