New to PSVR - Some thoughts

Finally took the plunge and bought a used PSVR kit off eBay

Games I've played so far

Skyrim - I'm more or less brand new to this game, only played the first hour or so when it first released on PS3
Resident Evil 7 - I've played through this 3-4 times outside of VR
Sega Genesis Classics
Astrobot: Rescue Mission
Ace Combat 7

So right off the bat, the visual fidelity really surprised me. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised because it's old tech at this point but VR on a base PS4 really doesn't look that great, at least with the games I've played so far.

Skyrim: Doesn't surprise me that the graphics aren't too great but it's kind of laughable when you're out in the open world, rivers in the distance just look plain bad, tons of pop in, rough textures, etc. However, the game is fun as hell to play. I've been utilizing the dual Move controllers with direct movement and while it's pretty janky, it's also just damn good fun across the board to be swinging swords and running around. PSVR doesn't allow for mods so it's definitely hindered in that regard but it's $20 right now and worth every cent. The biggest compliment that I can give Skyrim is that I really do feel like I'm a part of the world. I stopped playing the game early on when I got it on PS3 because it was just too overwhelming, all the options and stuff. With PSVR, I just don't really give a shit. I'm just running around, not really concerned with missing out on things. I just want to get quests and explore caves. It took an experience that felt like micro-managing and changed in into something that makes me feel like I'm Madmartigan from Willow.

Resident Evil 7: I didn't expect the graphics to take this much of a hit. It's pretty jarring cause I'm already familiar with the game and how it looks on a TV or Monitor. Jack stalking me is definitely scary, probably just as scary to me even outside of VR. VR would have been a better initial experience but honestly, as it stands right now, I feel like playing the game on a TV is a better experience. It's also just downright hard to look at in VR at times, not because it's the areas are gross, I just can't find a brightness setting that works for my eyes. It's either too dark to just way too bright. The well-lit areas are honestly hard to look at. I am early into the game, in the safe room after unlocking the hatch in the kitchen so maybe I'll adjust and it won't be an issue. So far the coolest aspect is being able to peer forward or look around corners. It really lets you see a lot of small details that are missed when playing outside of VR. Also, I haven't played RE4 VR but it's probably the better of the two. RE4 just looks way more interactive than what RE7 can provide.

Ace Combat 7: This seemed fine, I don't know the controls so I only played for a few minutes but looking around inside the cockpit is incredibly immersive.

Sega Genesis Classics: The VR mode allows you to actually be inside the Menu Room, you can look around and play the games as if you're sitting on the ground in front of the TV. It's pretty cool, a total novelty and nothing mind blowing but it did bring back slight feelings of when I was a kid and playing the Genesis in the exact same manner. It's a really cool update that Sega added in.

Astrobot - Rescue Mission: This game right here is the killer app so far. The way that it expands your area of play for a platformer in that you can stand up and look around to find secrets and stuff. It's hard to describe how cool it is because a FPS in VR, most people can wrap their minds around that. A platformer though, footage just doesn't capture it. Having the headset on and controlling Astrobot is a special and unique experience. The gameplay is simplistic so far but it's just so damn fun, the graphics are gorgeous too, no complaints there. It was literally one of those gaming experiences where I was involuntarily saying, "OH WOW...." over and over. My wife loves it too, it was really cool watching her play and seeing her smile, laugh, etc. The game just makes you feel things in a different way.

Do I recommend PSVR? Absolutely. I don't $400 recommend it but I got a full kit for like $230, I don't regret paying that at all.

I definitely plan on getting Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, Drunken Bar Room Fight, and there's some YouTube videos I've seen that showcase some really solid games, can't remember their names though.

The main thing that PSVR has me excited for though is PSVR2. The PS5 has been on my radar but I didn't really have a need for one, PSVR2 is going to cause me to get a PS5. It's going to be insanely expensive but man, since this is going to be a huge aspect of gaming in the years to come, I definitely want to experience it because it really is a damn cool experience.

I do need to also mention that VR 100% takes a toll on your body. It physically and mentally drains you, I'll hopefully adjust but I have to take a break like every hour or so cause of the eye strain and it kind of gives me shaky legs. Jack chasing me in RE7 made me a little nauseous but nothing so far that made me feel physically ill.

So GAF, are you like me and have been wanting PSVR but haven't taken the plunge yet? Were you an early adopter? Do you just flat out hate VR, or does it make you ill to the point where you can't play it?

It's a very old headset (VR is advancing pretty fast), so at this point I think it's better to wait for PSVR2, which will be a huge advancement in all aspects.

But for a bargain price it's not bad to experience this historic first Console VR :)

Astrobot for me was worth the price of admission its a shame not many got to play this one of the all time great platformer. I couldnt do re7 myself in vr the image quality took too much of a hit. Was never a big fan of skyrim so never tried that same with ace combat. The until dawn on rails shooter is good if you enjoy old arcade light gun games. The mafioso game blood and truth was also really good. I would recommend those 2 next.

Like you, I found it a fun novelty during the honeymoon period, albeit with some low level discomfort on feeling crappy afterwards.

It would be good to see you return to this thread in 5-6 months and if you're still playing or have bounced off it like many seem to do.

I'm sure I'll continually dip in and out. It's probably going to be a weekend type thing cause my living room setup only allows me to play it in the evening due to the lighting, and the mental exhaustion sticks with me even the day after. Unless that goes away, I don't really see myself playing it during the weekdays because I'm concerned it'll affect my ability to work, lol.

I got my PSVR in December of 2020 and have over 20 games for it. Most recent one I bought was Puzzling Places (fantastic game if you enjoy jigsaw puzzles).

I might grab that upcoming VR MMO called Zenith (releasing Jan. 27th) as well.

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
Only tried psvr once but I really enjoyed Beat Saber, Astrobot and that coolass Tetris game.

Only thing I didn't liked was the device resolution, kinda blurry.

Fairly new PSVR user here. Completed RE7 for the first time in VR, Minecraft is dope, NMS is really something else.
I kinda like SW Squadrons. And fell in love with Persistence.
I don't give a flying fuck about the graphics cut backs. Yes, they are big. But man, trying VR for the first time and RE 7? Never played anything scarier.

Yeah the resolution is proper shit. Only very few games have great picture. Not that I tried many anyway. But the demo vr worlds has great picture quality as well. The shark demo is so good, to scare people 😆

This game is extremely good, you can kill hours working on a 400 piece puzzle without even realizing it.

I hope they release puzzle expansion packs.
I'm glad you and someone else mentioned that, I'll have to look into it. My wife loves puzzles but actual puzzles are a pain the ass due to all the space it requires. Our house is small.

Everything has novelty though. You buy a shiny new console for games to look 95% the same as they did at launch 5 years later.

lol, is clapping cheeks code for pron? I haven't.

I did shove my face into Mia's chest in RE7 though, I couldn't help myself. Same thing with Jack at the dinner table, was just kinda breaking the camera and looking around, lol.
The 7k videos are a little creepy when you make eye contact and its like 80% of the way there to visually real.

Ended up selling mine to a mate for £100 it's a 1st gen one with moves, as much as I loved it, it had run its course with me as setup was too much of a pain in the arse as I couldnt leave it out so had to put away after each use and as anyone with one will know it's an utter bollocks with so many cables and as much as I loved Skyrim the PS3 graphics did start to grate but I'll be day 1 for PSVR2 that I can't wait for

It was a solid punt for Sony back then but right now I can't recommend it at all, the kit is pretty much garbage for today's standard if you have tried any other sort of VR headset.

Even at $200 used it's a pretty terrible deal IMHO. you're much better served getting a NEW Quest for $300.

One huge benefit for skyrim PSVR for console owners was that locked 60fps. I think it was the first console version for years.(which is ridiculous)I think it's projected 90hz actually, which feels better than 60fps but not quite native 90fps.

Nah, it's not a terrible deal. If I bought it brand new for $400+ I'd be disappointed but I think $230 is totally fair. It's definitely dated but PSVR has the titles I was most interested in and Quest 2 can get really expensive when you start looking at the extra battery and headstrap, etc. I don't know how necessary those additions are but YouTube makes it seem like they are. I was also looking at the Quest 2 for the desktop link for Steam VR games and honestly just didn't want to deal with it all. PSVR has a ton of cables but it's still a more convenient process for me than maximizing the Quest 2's potential.

I got it on sale a few years back. I played it a lot the first month, but I got sick of all the cables and finicky setup with the camera. I haven't touched it ever since. I'll probably give the PSVR2 a shot since it looks to fix a lot of those issues.

Talking about PSVR. I have been trying the 3D games of Playstation 3 (Wipeout, Motortorm Apocalypse, Killzone 3, etc) using the PSVR.

Setup is the most convoluted mess you can imagine, since you need to trigger the 3D cinema mode of Playstation 4 and change the HDMI from PS3 to the VR box on Playstation 4 (which must be running, of course). So you end powering the headset, the PS4 and PS3, yep, very eco-friendly.

Games work surprisingly well, considering the very low resolution of VR games on PS4, and the sense of depth is good.

I think for anyone wanting to get into VR today the Quest 2 is a better bet. Sure, it's technically a weaker system than the PS4, but the hardware is otherwise better with full 360-degree room scale tracking (the way this just WORKS using nothing but the cameras on the headset is pure magic), far better VR controllers, a higher resolution display with better clarity, much more convenient setup (there pretty much isn't one, you just put it on and define your play space), etc. And most importantly, a ton of games are being released for it. Sure, it doesn't have Skyrim or RE7, but it does have RE4, which is pretty damn awesome even though it looks rather dated visually. And most of the best VR games are as good or better on it (Beat Saber, Superhot, Job Simulator, etc). Oh, and it has Eleven Table Tennis. That game is just so awesome. You can of course also use it as a PC headset if you have a system powerful enough, but it offers a lot of great experiences as a standalone. But yes, the battery strap is almost a required purchase, as it brings the battery life from "nooo, I want to keep playing" to "that's alright, I'm probably done for the day".

Can't wait for some actual high end VR with the PSVR2 though.

The PSVR was really good considering my expectations were another Eyetoy or Move gimmick since it was done by Sony. I bought it for 150 bucks at black friday in 2017 and recently sold it for about the same price. The reason I ditched it was the cable hell and the incredible discrepancy with PS5 graphics.

In the end its a 2016 ish HMD. So its fine that it looks ancient now. But it absolutely has some gems, like Astrobot, Rez, RE VII, Wipeout. Those are brilliant. I still have those games digitally, so all it takes for Sony is to up rez them for PS VR2. I'm hoping they take their legacy support more seriously than they are doing right now.

Archery in VR. I felt pretty close to damn Robin Hood while blind firing arrows in Skyrim. It's pretty intuitive actually.

Wait until you can actually do it with pinpoint precision and move and aim easily with no tracking issues. No analog stick on the PSVR Moves is downright terrible by comparison. Pretty intuitive considering what they had to work with though.

Eh..! It's was serviceable, but I'll admit that I'm waiting for new controllers before moving back in. Oh, I had pin point precision. But higher fidelity headset might do wonders for taking trick shots!

Played Skyrim again last night for about 90 minutes and felt fine afterwards. I seem to be adjusting rather well to VR.

I gotta iterate again, Skyrim PSVR is damn fun. The graphics are still pretty awful, kinda feels like I'm looking at an N64 game with boosted graphics, but it's just downright entertaining being able to walk around the world. It's definitely immersive too even with the janky Move controls and whatnot. It never feels like I'm in a real world (due to the graphics), but it does feel like I'm inside a videogame world. It's pretty exciting knowing that this game can offer 1000s of hours worth of gameplay.

It really is a testament to how VR can completely change the way a game feels. I normally don't enjoy games like Skyrim cause they're just too massive but I'm really enjoying it, I would even say that I'm becoming addicted to it cause it's just damn fun to play.

I couldn't get into Skyrim on PSVR. Is there a way of changing the jumping movement so you can walk? I remember it just jumping from point to point instead of walking. It was completely disorientating.

Definitely! I think they eventually released an update that allowed for direct movement.

The option that I use allows you to press the move button on your non-dominant hand and that makes you walk forward, double pressing it causes you to sprint. On the dominant move controller, X causes you to turn left, O causes you to turn right. You can either set it up so you'll strafe by turning/rotating the non-dominant Move controller, or set it so the direction you look will cause you to strafe. Strafing is really subtle, kind of makes you walk at an angle, not fully sideways. Also, X on the non-dominant Move controller causes you to walk backwards. Triangle on the dominant Move controller lets you jump. Holding down Triangle on the dominant move controller lets you crouch.

Triangle on the non-dominant move controller brings up the item/magic/map compass. Square on the non-dominant move controller brings up the quest/settings menu. Holding down O on the non-dominant move controller sheathes/unsheathes your weapons/spells. It's kinda wonky trying to dual wield. I'm a lefty and I feel like that game isn't registering that in the menus. It's kind of trial and error to get a shield and spell or melee weapon equipped, but shields are kind of a pain with the move controller setup, I've opted to just dual wield spells instead and just use the environment to shield me from arrows or dragon fire.

Takes a bit of getting used to, but it's pretty brilliant that it manages to work as well as it does. It definitely creates some unflattering battle mechanics but I'm playing on EASY and it's still somewhat of a challenge but nothing frustrating. I've opted for putting certain weapons and spells in my Favorites list and pressing O on the non-dominant move controller causes your Favorites list to appear so you can easily swap in the heat of battle. Menus pause the game.

You can also turn on incremental turning but I turned that off, just direct smooth motion. It definitely took some fine tuning for the first couple hours but I have a set up I'm happy with. If you jump back in, don't forget the height setting. When I first started playing the game I was like 3 feet tall, lol. Felt like a toddler running around.

I remember back when I had a PSVR playing RE7 with it was the reason I upgraded to a PS4 Pro. The graphical drop on the base PS4 was a bit much, but the Pro pretty much fixed those downsides for me as plenty of games got a graphical & res upgrade. Pro was probably a better fit as a PSVR upgrade than one for 4KTV owners :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Skyrim VR is the same for me, never really got on with the regular version but I can spend plenty of time with it in VR. Recently returned to it with PCVR and like you say it does a good job immersing you in the world, I've always enjoyed the sense of scale and space you get from the game. Sometimes it's good to just go sightseeing around the towns.

I still need to try Skyrim at some point! Glad you checked out Astrobot, that is probably the best the console has to offer (but oh man, what an experience). Definitely pick up Rush of Blood if you haven't yet, it is super simple but pure fun, should be super cheap as well. Since I decided to go for the VR experience I decided to go all-in, picked up the Aim gun and a Thrustmaster steering wheel as well. Farpoint with Aim was a transformative shooter experience for me, it had a lot of hype so I wasn't sure what to expect but really, so good (and haven't seen this done properly on another platform yet, personally). Drive Club and GT Sport are all I've used with the wheel, but it feels great to me. I usually have no interest in driving games (the abstraction of a control stick is too much of a departure for me) but racing in VR with a legit wheel is such a kick that I can't seem to get tired of. I'll probably pick up Hitman at some point as well..

Yea, Astrobot is damn fun and just solid all around, put some more time into it last night. I was really loving this track from the beach level. It might be the first game that I actually try to platinum. Did some challenge levels too and those were a ton of fun, really nice change of pace.

The reverb on that guitar w/ nice headphones. It was just pure magic.

Also picked up Doom 3 VR, Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, and Zenith (new MMO game).

Haven't had a chance to try Doom 3 or Rush of Blood, Zenith was a complete mess though. It's early and will need updates but it was literally unplayable for me in terms of gameplay, creating a character and connecting to the server was fine. The game just did no effort whatsoever to show you the controls or anything like that. The tracking was absolutely fucked too, my arms were just going nuts. Just really sloppy across the board. I'll put some more time into it after work cause videos make it look fun but man, what a nightmare it was last night. It felt and looked like some haggard Chinese mobile game on the Android store.

I just bought a PSVR V2 dirt cheap with the AIM controller and PS4 camera last weekend (130 euros) for me and my son in our to-realise gameroom as an extra.

I played:

- Tetris Effect (Oh my, them colors)
- Rez Infinite
- Doom VFR (awesome once you get the controls configurerd properly!!)
- Farpoint (With aim controller is one hell of an experience)
- Star Wars Squadrons
- Sniper Elite VR (A must have with the aim controller)
- Megadrive Collection

The Blood ant Truth demo is also pretty fun!

Low resolution aside, it's fucking awesome!

I can see crystal clear what's right in front of me, only the outer edges are blurry, but since VR requires you to move your head, its not that intrusive.

Sniper Elite is my favorite, since it has a full campagin. Doom VFR a close second bacause of the brutal action and Farpoint 3rd.

I haven't played it on PSVR but on Quest 2 Pistol Whip is a great arcade shooter. Cheap too. Superhot is amazing also.

Try Job Simulator and Vacation Simulator, those games are actually quite fun.

Also, if you like Justin Roiland, grab the Rick and Morty VR game and accounting+.

Don’t forget Blood and Truth, Creed, and Iron Man VR. All pretty solid.

Yes I play on buying Super Hot VR! Just finished the normal version and it's amazing!

Tetris in VR is also 1 fine experience. Especially with headphones on. I really get sucked into that game.. The effects and music are pure bliss.
