Phil Spencer: Nintendo and Sony are not going to do anything that damages gaming in the long run.

"Nintendo's not going to do anything that damages gaming in the long run because that's the business they're in. Sony is the same and I trust them. ... Valve's the same way.
In other words, if those companies dont want to damage their ecosystem, then sign the dotted line to keep the games on their platform.

And the header of that contract says: Game Pass

Yeah, Microsoft is saving us from the real villains. It's kinda like when the Soviet Union invaded Poland to save them from being invaded by Germany.
I don't think these political allegories are working.

The lesser evil invaded Poland

Show me what publishers and developers Google, Facebook and Amazon have bought.

Ready At Dawn

BigBox VR

PlayGiga

Population

Typhoon Studios

..a few examples. And don't tell me they "don't count" because they might not be studios you know or you care about.

Also, a publisher's just a collection of developers who can market and distribute their product. So saying one acquisition is less "evil" because it wasn't a publisher is saying mostly nothing.

Nintendo has always had it’s niche, and with the Switch it still does; being considered a handheld and major console at the same time and still offering the classic 1st parties. Playstation has built a following for years on quality exclusives and they are staying that path to this day too. Microsoft with the Xbox on the otherhand for the longest time has kind of struggled for it’s identity, and once Don Mattrick came in it didn’t even really seem to have an identity at all, especially once the Xbox One hit.

With Microsoft now basically tying their entire business strategy to Game Pass, they now have their own lane for once, which keeps them mostly out of direct conflict with the other two...and to be fair that might be for the best.

How did you miss the point? MS was like amazon, google, facebook, before they got into the console biz. sure they made a few games but it wasn't a part of the core biz.

Its now 100% part of the core biz. is that clear?

Yes, that's the point we all were making lol

So, after 20 plus years and 4 generations of losing at poker to Sony and Nintendo, despite having the most chips at the table, he just bought a casino so he can’t lose as the house. Now he’s afraid Apple or Amazon will buy PlayStation and fund them to do the same. He doesn’t think he can win unless he plays a game others can’t afford.

Thats another dumb analogy

The guy is a talker. People are soaking it up.

No denying he is making the right moves. But lets not forget that Xbox tried to jack up the price of Gold. And eventually, the sub price for GP will go up once the ecosystem has swelled to a higher base drunk in games.

I’m very curious to know what he is like behind closed doors.

People who swallow 70$ games and 10$ upgrades :messenger_tears_of_joy:
ha whatever bro Sony got in the market only after Nintendo screwed them over on the snes cd with the tech sony developed.
Microsoft Flight Simular was out before Windows. Also MS created DirectX...Google for example created a graveyard :messenger_tears_of_joy:
Yep and they have been trailing ever since. Now trying to get a win by buying the bar. Yeah!

You realize Microsoft is in Advertisement and Search too with Bing, right?

Microsoft is exactly like other big tech companies (Apple, Google, Amazon), so he's effectively arguing against himself here.

Actually Microsoft are not as intrusive when it comes to data collection. Sure they use cookies (like every website does) but they dont have the shady practices of the likes of Facebook.

Also Microsoft have been good to gaming so far, Facebook, Google etc are really unproven in this space.

People say these acquisitions are to cut off some IPs from Sony's consoles...but honestly?
What Microsoft fears the most? Amazon, Apple, Google, etc acquiring one of these major publishers out of the blue and then THEY lose access to those IPs.

They are major players wanting desperately for a piece of this pie.

What Phil is saying is "we know Sony and Nintendo won't do that. The other bigger ones? You never know"

it’s spot on. He’s been out played, out maneuvered and bluffed at every turn. There’s nothing shrewd about anything he does. If he was he’d take CoD away from PlayStation tomorrow and pay a couple of billion in fines. He just overpaid by about 20 billion for the right to take away a game. What’s another couple going to do?
Isn't it the opposite? Sony has been out played and out maneuvered. Sony tried to lock down exclusivity on starfield and ms bought Bethesda. Sony had an exclusivity deal with cod and ms bought Activision. Sony tried to bluff and ms called them on it and took the pot. Hopefully Sony has finally learned their lesson.

Plot twist will be that the lesson is to let the Netflix of gaming onto their platform or pay the price.

I don't know why you all here are so resistant to the idea of Amazon, Google, etc. getting into the gaming industry. These firms hire some of the best talent in the world. A lot of what holds AAA gaming back is the fact that the employee base is underpaid and overworked. It isn't an attractive proposition for a smart and motivated developer to work for some American game studio. Even Microsoft doesn't pay as much as Google and Facebook for its engineering roles.

Zero interest in the stadia model streaming plus paying full price for the game and rental of the server to play.
the Amazon streaming nope no local option, Facebook VR no thanks.

You only get out played and out maneuvered if you possess the same resources as your rival and fail to make as good of a use of them as he does: Were I to get destroyed by a heavyweight MMA champion in a forced cage fight, I doubt anybody would refer to me as the guy who got outplayed and outmaneuvered. But that is just me...🤔

Sony humiliated MS and nearly sunk the Xbox last gen. This gen theyre making some worse decisions. Sony has outplayed MS for sure, and MS had started outplaying in a few areas as well, not just budget. The competition is good and hopefully stays that way

Ok. Now lets think about this for a second. Phil just spent $70 billion dollars, $82 if you count Minecraft and Zenimax, because he's afraid Google, Apple and Facebook will come in and remove CoD from Xbox. Do you really believe Phil would spend $70 billion just to keep CoD on Xbox?

Lets not even discuss the fact that Bobby Kotick did go to Facebook and shop around, and found no buyers other than Microsoft. Google already tried their hand at gaming and struck out. They just closed down both of the studios they opened. Amazon failed at creating that awful Moba game and dropped it immediately. Apple has shown ZERO interest in video games. MS had zero competition for the bidding rights to the biggest IP in gaming. What does that tell you?

If Microsoft was just saving gamers from the big bad trillion dollar companies, they would not have made Starfield and Elder Scrolls xbox exclusive. This is about console wars. This is about putting gamepass on the PS5 and Switch. There is really nothing more to it than that. He's creating a big bad boogeyman to hide the fact that he's that boogeyman. The fact of the matter is that no one else was interested in Activision. No desperation from Apple, Google or Amazon here.

Go look up the biggest acquisitions by Apple, Google, and Amazon. $13 billion tops. Most them are in the $2-3 billion range. No one is spending $70 billion on video games lol

Also, it is a little silly to assume that Google/Apple/Facebook might be worse. What if they could have brought something new and different? We might never know now.
We know from how they conduct business that they would be much worse.

That being said, with the direction AAA gaming is going, it would be fitting for them to take it over. We need another crash.

All this Activision deal is the beginning of a mess! We gamers loose some IQ numbers because of the stupid brand loyalty and that’s why some companies get away with a lot of things during all these years. instead of talking about what we gamers what/need for the industry. we are fighting eachother in pointless arguments…

Also let’s be fair, with all that amount of money wasted… you could had open a lot of new studios and bring new talent in… but it seems the industry is all about the regurgitation of the same IPs over and over because it’s easy!

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Are we going to see Sony Microsoft and Nintendo collaborate in future? The ultimate consolidation?

It's weird, before this generation the prospect of MS and Nintendo collaborating was a lot more likelier (and I still think it's more likely than Sony and Nintendo collaborating TBH).

MS owns the Banjo IP but it's coming to Switch (probably paving the path for Goldeneye on Xbox).

This is whats funny, if anything microsoft is just making the scene hotter with these record breaking acquisitions. Now the blood is truly in the water for other tech firms once they do some digging.

One thing for sure - MS investor's call will see an influx of listeners :messenger_tears_of_joy:

There will be a lot of questions from analysts about this deal. It will be entertaining to say the least. Same goes for Sony's quarterly call.

Investors calls will be this year's E3 replacement for Neogaf. Gather round and grab some popcorn.

People said the same thing about Sony too in the 90s...

And look at how quickly they proved people wrong. Xbox are 4 generations deep and they still have everything to prove, hence they've moved on to simply utilising their purchasing power.

They could only resist for so long.

They’ve been in games for two decades and managed the only build 3 franchises

He spent 77 billion dollars to take games away and has had a $1 promotion active for 3 years to basically give games away. Its the only game he can play because he’s backed by one of 3-5 companies in the world that can. Business is business so it’s all fair. But it’s a last resort and one that Sony or Nintendo can’t compete in because only a handful can. But the game they play he was no match for.
