Phil Spencer: Nintendo and Sony are not going to do anything that damages gaming in the long run.

Well, imagine if Facebook or Amazon were to buy Activision, and ask yourself if they would be better stewards to the industry versus someone like Microsoft.

At the end of the day, I'd rather see Sony, Nintendo, or MS, being the ones making games and absorbing 3rd party companies than say, Tencent, Facebook, Google, etc. Look how Google treats their products ffs.
And look how Microsoft treated the Zune, Windows Phone, Kin, Kinect, tai.ai
They are no different to any big tech company out there.

Man if you weren't so off-base dumb-concerned over monopolies (this deal BTW doesn't create a monopoly, read up on what a monopoly actually is) you'd recognize the forest from the trees: MS's intentions aren't to "destroy" Sony or Nintendo like fanboys think. Why would they? If Sony or Nintendo are destroyed, that creates a vacuum for Apple, Google, Amazon, Tencent etc. to come in and fill the void.

That doesn't mean they won't be competitive with their newly acquired assets; it just means they aren't out to choke Sony or Nintendo to death. There'll always be some form of Activision-Blizzard (and Zenimax) software support on Sony and Nintendo platforms, especially if those platform holders work out a deal for GamePass on their systems (probably tailored to their ecosystem in some way).

Put it another way: if Microsoft didn't buy Activision-Blizzard, Facebook would've. Or Google. Or Tencent (btw Tencent have shares in Activision-Blizzard they'll still retain post-acquisition). And while all of these major tech/entertainment conglomerates (yes, including Sony) are at least partially involved in things benefiting various governmental bodies that may not be at the peak best interest of us regular folks, out of the companies looking to buy Activision-Blizzard, Microsoft are the least offending of those options by a decent mile.

Also I don't see how you blame the buyer when the seller approached the buyer with the proposition to begin with 🤷‍♂️
Show me what publishers and developers Google, Facebook and Amazon have bought.

Microsoft TRIED to buy Nintendo. Nintendo laughed in their face. Literally. And that story has been told by Microsoft themselves.

So many people here look at what a certain company is worth and think that's just a big price tag anyone can just buy if and whenever they want.
And Nintendo once screwed over Sony.

We know what happened next.

Am I a troop? I don’t even own an Xbox at the moment, I’m PS5/Switch and PC w/ GamePass
If you're not shitting on MS or saying Phil is a piece of shit or that he doesn't know gaming (lol) then your're a troop to these people. Just let them go, it's funnier that way.

How is that different from amazon or google? Outside of those two not having a dedicated box? If anything they’d release on more platforms
The console, the Windows OS. Until the others having equivalents to all these , MS >>>>>>>>>>>>> ...

But Sony just bought Bluepoint Games and i really loved their work on MGS HD Collection and Titan Fall on Xbox. So i guess because i want them to work on more games for Xbox Sony is now "a monopoly" ?

Sony have bought nearly all of their existing studios and then nurtured them over time to crank out amazeball games... but it still all really started as acquisitions just the same.
Just like i said in the other thread, people quickly forget how the PS brand enter the market...

Microsoft is already doing consolidating the industry and taking games from other platforms.

This guy try to be nice but in the end what he wants is to consolidate.
And how's that different from Sony making games like FF or Spiderman exclusive?

They just want to monopolize and set Gamepass as the only gaming streaming device on the planet and their buying their way into it.

They’re literally going to be taking money from Sony to supercharge PlayStation game streaming via Azure. That’s such a strange way to push for streaming monopoly, isn’t it ?

How is MS buying two of the biggest publishers in the world different to Marvel giving Sony got the rights to develop a Spiderman game?

Decent point about Spiderman. You gonna do FF or Street Fighter next?

Ooofff bringing that shit up, just reminds me how some of you only deal with Sony on a console level. I can attest (owning a Vaio top of the line, a MP3 player and several phones from them going back to the Sony Ericsson ones) they're not better at all, not even close.

A single game exclusivity is not comparable to buying two entire publishers to gate hundreds of games off for the rest of time

Stop with the false equivalence

You really need that explained?
Yep. Marvel actually approached Sony who then approached Insomniac. Marvel told them to pick any character and they chose Spiderman. It is a partnership between all three entities (before Insomniac became part of Sony).

Marvel went to Square Enix and other publishers as well. Thats how Crystal Dynamics got to do Avengers and the Deus Ex devs were given Guardians of the Galaxy.

I wouldnt be surprised if Marvel went to Microsoft as well.

Three games in the list I mentioned, but the numbers are immaterial.

You cannot sit there and claim it’s evil to pay money to keep games in a usually multiplatform series off other platforms, and then see nothing bad when your favorite company does the same thing.

If you’re morally against something, the scale shouldn’t matter

Bottom line is that both companies spend money to keep content to their own platform. It’s become a norm these days.

Still crying about Spiderman? And meanwhile yelling at people not to whine about all the Zenimax and AB games?
Spiderman not having a definitive pc version is to cry. Zenimax and AB games will not have a definitive pc version anymore???

Fare thee well

What we really fear is fair competition, new business growth, and a strong middle class economy. I mean, look where that gets you? 😄

You want me to start quoting some posts in this thread?

Don't worry, I'm half way through reading it now.

The delusion is strong with some people. I need to find a way to make my customers this brain dead so I can live out the rest of my days in paradise.

Do you REALLY believe MS decided to spend $70B on Activision just because Bobby is a creep? I have no idea how that makes sense to anyone.

No, my point was the companies were vulnerable which made it easier for MS to buy them. If that wasn't the case these acquisitions might not have happened.

The scale does matter and pretending its not is disingenuous

Curious bit from the Washington Post interview:

Reminds me of Jay Leno saying, 'Dont blame Conan.'

I doubt anyone is worried about Sony or Nintendo are going out there spending almost a $100 billion buying out Minecraft, Zenimax and Activision at the risk of creating monopolies that might damage the industry in the long run.

Looking forward to that heel turn in 2023.

Quite possibly the dumbest shit I've read in this thread. Are you actually equating the purchase of Insomniac/bluepoint/Housemarque with the purchase of actiblizzard?
