Phil Spencer Wants to Revive Old Activsion IPs

“I was looking at the IP list, I mean, let’s go!” Spencer said. "‘King’s Quest,’ ‘Guitar Hero.’ ... I should know this but I think they got ‘HeXen.’”

Spencer said the Xbox team will talk with developers about working on a variety of franchises from the Activision Blizzard vaults.

“We’re hoping that we’ll be able to work with them when the deal closes to make sure we have resources to work on franchises that I love from my childhood and that the teams really want to get,” Spencer said. “I’m looking forward to these conversations. I really think it’s about adding resources and increasing capability.”

Interstate 76! Let’s do it!

Guitar Hero needs a proper remake. License all the best songs and DLC. Make Pro/MIDI Instruments a priority. Do it right like Clone Hero and it'll sell.
Yep. This entire deal is more about the massive potential of Guitar Hero and the like than it is about some military shooter that is on the decline. Microsoft is making a major play on the Metaverse.

I'm very happy about how often I've seen Guitar Hero get mentioned by Spencer and Kotick these last few days.

Guitar Hero and Rock Band both just got acquired, I would love if either could make a real comeback (unlike the half measure taken on both sides last gen with RB4 and GH: Live, neither really lived up to their potential).

Putting Raven, or even id on a new Hexen could be rad.

Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk are no brainers.

I am not sure on the ancient stuff inherited from Sierra, I love those games but I don't know if they make sense for reboots.

I guess Tribes is about due for a reboot.

At a certain point you have to ask if the value is there compared to a new IP. Like sure, you COULD do a new Pitfall, but would that get people more hyped than just a new IP?

This is so exciting to see. It's clear this isn't about denying games to other platforms but expanding Xbox offerings. The biggest bonus is to free studios like Toys for Bob and High Moon from being Call of Duty support to actually using their own creative vision to make new games. This certainly isn't not the X1 MS here.

Double Fine making a Space Quest or Kings Quest game could be pretty damn good.

Fuck it just give me up ports of all the old games customized for controller on Gamepass while we wait.

how about a Pitfall! reimagining, like a Tomb Raider or Uncharted type of game except you have to jump over a lot of pits and alligators

Imagine Pitfall series becoming Microsoft's 1st party answer to the Uncharted series... Tomb Raider who? haha

They should bring back Leisure Suit Larry, but call it Leisure Skirt Laura. You play as a hot bisexual NEET who stumbles her way into romantic encounters and turns into a dominating goddess when the action goes down.

Great twist on the formula IMO 👍

This would probably recoup the acquisition purchase price in just one year of sales lmao

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
Id prefer new IP's stop diggin up the past and put resources into new ideas pleaseeeee
You may be right, but then I remember the DOOM reboot and start thinking how cool could it be if they gave the same treatment to franchises like Heretic, Hexen or Soldier of Fortune.

Of course they could make good games with this IP, buy why? It's probably not what they want to do and those IP aren't likely to bring in a vast new audience that Double Fine's original titles need.

Now THAT I could definitely see happening. Maybe even having Double Fine give some of the Sierra back catalog the same kind of remaster treatment they gave Day of the Tentacle and Full Throttle.

The next bitcoin is going to be talented game devs.

So many studios, so many IPs, so many grand ambitions and so few people that actually could master the overwhelming ever-increasing workload.

We really need more action and fewer promises. Wouldn't be the first time that more games and the greatest lineups of games is being mentioned.

By the way... Did you guys actually prefer Hexen over Heretic? Hexen looked cool as fuck and may have some of the best sprite work I've ever seen, but all the switch hunting kinda killed it for me. Oh and those enemies with shields, fuck 'em.

I had much more fun with both Heretic games, specially the second one which came as a total surprise for me.

Heretic was a fun Doom clone but I always liked Hexen more. Just found it more interesting overall.

I think a lot more people were exposed to Hexen due to the console ports in the late 90s.

A list that may or may not be entirely accurate:
  1. Call of Dutythe implication? That Call of Duty games will launch on Game Pass and might no longer launch on PlayStation, or worse, skip PlayStation entirely.
  2. Crash Bandicoot Sony fans probably wish that Activision’s relationship with Naughty Dog will bring the beloved marsupial back to PlayStation consoles.
  3. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater
  4. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice surprised by this one? While developed by FromSoftware, which has eventually produced Demon Souls Remake as a PS5 launch exclusive, the Sekiro game is actually owned by Activision.
  5. Spyro
  6. Skylanders
  7. King’s Quest
  8. Prototype
  9. Geometry Wars

And a lot of abandoned game titles that are due a revival, still owned by Activision:
  1. Guitar Hero
  2. DJ Hero
  3. Caesar
  4. Gun
  5. Hexen
  6. Interstate ’76
  7. Laura Bow Mysteries
  8. Phantasmagoria
  9. Pitfall
  10. Police Quest
  11. Quest for Glory
  12. Singularity
  13. Soldier of Fortune
  14. Space Quest
  15. Tenchu
  16. TimeShift
  17. Zork
  18. True Crime

Blizzard Games
Don’t you guys have phones? Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard will bolster Activision Blizzard’s positioning in the mobile market, while these Blizzard games will most likely feature on Xbox Game Pass sooner than later, and have its future titles launch as Xbox exclusives to some capacity.
  1. Warcraft Uhh, Reforged on Game Pass, maybe?
  2. World of Warcraft Could this lead to Activision Blizzard making an Xbox Series X port for their storied MMORPG?
  3. DiabloSony fans should start praying to God this doesn’t affect Diablo IV‘s launch platforms.
  4. Overwatch – not sure if this franchise is still alive at this point, given how long Overwatch 2 has been in development hell, but maybe this acquisition can set the series back on track.
  5. Hearthstone Contrary to popular belief, Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard is no mere random move, unlike anything most cards do in Hearthstone
  6. StarCraft – StarCraft III on Xbox Series X and PC and on Game Pass on Day 1, please.
  7. Heroes of the Storm this one is definitely dead in a ditch.

And a lone inactive title that is still owned by Blizzard:
  1. The Lost Vikings

I want a new DJ hero.

Would love for them to get Daft Punk back to co-produce the music lineup or something even just Thomas or Guy-Man would be cool to see them active after their disband :messenger_pensive:

Imagine all the great mixes that could be in the game with all the dance and awesome music release within the last 10 years.
