Recommendations on a souls game to play in anticipation of Elden Ring? (xbox only)

was thinking it might be fun to play a Souls game in anticipation of Elden Ring so I can get a bit more familiar with the gameplay/challenge of a FromSoftware game

I beat Demon's Souls on PS3 a long, long time ago but haven't touched any of the other games.

currently only have xsx and a switch.

I thinking Dark Souls Remastered or Dark Souls III are probably my best bets? between these two, which would you recommend? open to any suggestions.

I know Sekiro is supposed to be great too but it's my understanding that game is quite different and not really comparable?

Dark Souls 2 is personally my favorite. I just prefer vanilla version and not a big fan of the dlc.
Dark Souls 1 is obviously a classic
Dark Souls 3 is objectively the best. And the dlc is incredible. I feel DS3 is good Elden ring preparation

I’m headed through Mortal Shell currently, but it’s much clunkier, albeit runs beautifully on XSX.

Why not play the OG? DS Remastered is a great option to get introduced to the formulaz

Why you not giving DS2 not any consideration? It's the biggest game out of the 3. :messenger_winking_tongue:
I'm totally open to whatever

I just assumed DSR would make sense since it is a remaster and the first title so seemed like a solid entry point, and DS3 would make sense since it latest entry in the DS series

I like large games so now DS2 sounds great too

DS2 is my fave too. Nice to see it get some love from other people, as oppose to 'Myazaki didnt direct it so its bad' attitude of most people.

Such an Xbox game, tho

Current Gif and Meme Champions never make excuses! Knack 1 platinum compared to DeS, DeS:R, DS. I wasn't kidding:

I think I'm going with Dark Souls III Deluxe Edition (which I believe adds all the DLC)

is the DLC story content? looks like there is a decent amount of DLC for the game

I recommend the first one. Not only will you have the benefit of a super clean resolution and 60fps, but it is an entry point into the franchise. I honestly believe you should play 1 and then 3 some time after. I think seeing the series from its roots is super important and Dark Souls is my personal game of all time. Seeing how the mechanics started and how they evolved is awesome, but also there are some neat references through the games that you will only understand if you've played those that come before it.

Souls 1, then Elden Ring or 3 in any order.

I am sorta leaning towards playing 1 first now because of my recent experience with the Yakuza games

I played Yakuza 0 before the other games and made playing the next, older games really not fun

if DS3 is more refined than DS1 it might be hard for me to go back and play DS1

I'm playing Sekiro in anticipation, but I don't recommend it at all. I have no idea how I'll go back to the regular souls gameplay after this. It's going to get weird.

Exactly this. Always best to play in order of release where possible.

You'll be a parry/stab master. Everything will be a cakewalk.

I just fear it's going to feel so slow. I mean, I love souls gameplay and I can't wait for Elden ring, but Sekiro was a mistake. It's just too good to exist.

I’d say DS3 because of the game mechanics. You’ll probably see similar enhancements in ER. Ashen on Xbox is great. I don’t know if going so hard into it now is a good thing. We are so close. I had a good time with Ashen.

I am just going to say Sekiro, even though you've acknowledged it and said you understand it is different.

It is very souls like, and it also has stealth mechanics that have returned too elden ring too.

Plus it is just a really damn good game too, I feel like the only people against the game, are the ones that can not play easy mode (co op)

Plus sekiro looks and plays really well on series X.

Dark souls 3 is now 60fps on series X, but quite a low resolution, 900p I think? Excellent game though :)

DS3 and I think it's 60fps on XSX. You're lucky being able to play that blind 1 month out from the GoTY.

Look no further than Sekiro.
This, Sekiro is my all time favourite FROM. Also Elden Ring most likely will play much more like Dark Souls series so you don’t want to burn yourself out, Sekiro is much more of FROM’s take on action game.

Sadly you cannot play Demon's Souls Remake as it's my favorite Souls game or Bloodborne.

But I believe Darksouls III is still a decent game. I liked it more than DS1/Remastered personally. If you ever get your hands on a PS5, I highly recommend DS and Bloodborne!

Demons Souls was very good but my problem with that game is most bosses are very one note, once you figure out their fatal flaw, they become a cake walk and not much fun to fight them multiple times.
