Sony announces PlayStation VR2 and Sense Controllers at CES

good efficient compression and a great hardware decoder. Quest 2 is amazing using airlink, it’s a true shame Sony choose to go this route. I couldn’t play games like Half Life Alyx tethered to a cord. I hope a wireless version sees light some day
WiFi, not Bluetooth, obviously.
What about foveated rendering? The other VR headsets dont support this right? I mean how are you supposed to quickly transfer data that comes from eye tracking from within the headset to the console GPU which renders the image and then sends it back to the headset without using wires?

USB-C speeds are up to 10 Gbps. Bluetooth and Wifi 6 are just a fraction of that. Maybe they would need to invent a new and different wireless format?

I think it would be sort of a missed opportunity if they don’t make it PC compatible in some way. But I’m cautiously optimistic since they made the Dualsense PC compatible and they are venturing into PC with more Playstation games releasing on PC.

It is not virtual link. Its USB C DP alt mode. They are not the same standards even when they aim to achieve the same thing.
USB-C DP Alt mode has no specific power delivery demands, which is obviously present in this case. The only other difference is the fact that DP Alt mode uses two USB2.0 links which VirtualLink trades for a USB 3.1 Gen2 link. The PS5 SoC's diagram shows two USB2.0 muxed with a 10Gb/s USB 3.1.

For you who know a few things about VR, how does this stack up to the competition, for example, Occulus.

Is it worth going for this or waiting for the new Occulus? which I assume will try to compete with this.

Slightly higher res per eye than the Quest 2. The Quest 2 is 1832x1920 per eye. Same refresh rate. Oculus has the same type of tracking, etc. We don't know yet if the PSVR2 will support hand tracking or pass through, but the hardware can do it; it's all software from that point.

Quest 2 has crappy display.

PSVR2 wins in every category:
OLED vs LCD (blacks, haloing)
Higher resolution
Much wider FOV
Foviated rendering
Hardware adjustable IPD
Haptics/ergonomics/controllers...

Quest is not even close to PSVR2

Why are you comparing Quest 2 to PSVR 2? I don't get the comparisons. For one, Oculas Quest released in 2019, and Oculas Quest 2 released in 2020.

Oculas Quest 3 is scheduled to be released in 2022, unless unexpected delay until 2023.

You should be comparing Quest 3 vs PSVR 2 instead. Oculas Quest will always improve and outpace their competitors.

Oculas Quest 3 will be using OLED.

I don't see Sony releasing PSVR every 1 or 2 years.

Why not give me the option like with Quest?
quest is compressing to h.264 for link and hevc for airlink to reduce the bandwidth enough that it will fit over 5ghz wifi. Sony appears to not be compressing this far down so it would require wigig 60 ghz.

So it's ok to compare Quest 2 to the old tech PSVR to shit on it but not ok to compare the fresh PSVR2 to the actual Quest 2 ? 🤔

Come on, be serious.

The Rift was their other headset BTW. They aren't the Oculus Rift Quest, it's just Oculus Quest.

Which now is essentially the Meta Quest.

Hell, even Cambria this year, with pancake lenses, could be a game changer. It’s a deluxe quest basically, until prices drop to use the same tech into Quest 3 probably a year later.

I’m personally waiting and highly anticipating the dome 3 tech to find it’s way hopefully into Cambria.

Now that is cool as fuck. Of course uses eye tracking to shift focus on the fly, and would use their AI assisted foveated.

I'll just get whatever's cheap. Quest 2 is fine for me for several years. I'll probably get Quest 4 or 5.

VR panels actually went for OLED years ago, but then almost everyone switched back to LCDs (except Sony for PSVR obviously). Big factors was brightness (striped LED panels also play a part in this) and black smear. There are ways to mitigate black smear, but the end result is almost always dimmer screens, and when you're already on a dim-like OLED.., it was a problem. Will be very interesting to get to know what kind of panel technology and processing Sony went with here.

Other specs looks good, albeit following the expected progression curve. I also predicted Sony would continue to go for cabled VR, seems like I was right.

VR doesn't interest me too much. I have tried a few different systems and I am certainly glad to have tried them - it's worth experiencing a couple times - but I can't say I will be rushing out to buy this. Specs look good though.

this is gonna be 600€ at best if they have to include both VR sense controllers

Not wireless kinda sucks.

Price shouldn’t be too bad though as they don’t have any onboard computer which should reduce costs, shouldn’t it?

PC compatibility would definitely be a huge value boost. As would an optional battery for a wireless mode. Though if they are taking a loss on these they might not want to sell any that don't benefit the PS ecosystem.

HDR vs SDR is significant.
OLED vs LCD is significant
110 vs 90 FOV is significant.
No, they're more "nice to have".
And the people that laughed at you kyliethicc kyliethicc are some PCMRs... who call themselves "enthusiasts" who would go to war and flip flop these specs all day everyday.

Today I learned that HDR, 'true' 4K, 110FOV and OLED, YES, OLED, are "oh just some nice to have features, totes NBD if not"

WOOSAH!

Y'all playing yourselves.

Bro, it's Facebook... they are carving the Trojan Horse into the normie realm.

How can you NOT see that?
Gaming, meetings, socializing, multi-media.

I like a broader functionality honestly. Just watching youtube and checking stuff on the browser is fun when I'm sitting in my space apartment and looking at an IMAX monitor.

Lol I know right. Yet when the RTX 4090 comes out and offers 3 more fps than the RX 7900 XT in some benchmark they're gonna be like that's worth an extra $500!

Valve doesn’t care about the PS ecosystem. That’s why PS has come to steam and not the other way around. They have the gravitas not Sony lol. Valve is super healthy financially.
Well the Orange Box made it to PS3 and you even had Gaben himself come up on the E3 stage to announce Portal 2 for PS3.

Different times, but I wouldn’t say its out of question that Alyx could show up for PSVR2.

I mean, who needs HDR color accuracy and the black ranges of an OLED with a wider more realist FOV in well, you know, a device that is supposed to simulate the virtues of reality?

All while feeling insulted for the (quite damned good for the price and features, don't get it twisted) lowest common denominator in the PCMR VR scene as if it needs defending in comparison since it really isn't an enthusiast device, it's more normie targeted (literally the device of TikTok) and a good companion device. Stop fronting, people.

There’s so much effort to dismiss Oculus’ output of games, i feel like you guys have no fucking clue about their output in the past years.
I am trying to give him the benefit of the doubt, but it feels something that he always refers to quest 2 as just "mobile vr". I mean, why keep ignoring that it also works on PC like how the PSVR2 works on PS5.

Being a PCVR & mobile (stanalone)?! that is more of plus!

I don't think brightness is a big factor on VR because there's no interference of brightness from outside, and it's not like LCDs are brighter than OLEDs in panels of this scale. Smartphone OLEDs get as bright if not brighter than LCDs nowadays because the latter don't use LED arrays.

LCD was adopted mainly because of cost for high refresh rate solutions and at the time it had screen door effect on high pixel densities.

It looks like psvr2 is using fresnel lenses which would be incredibly disappointing if it wasn't for this patent that's been filed. Fresnel lenses are cheaper, lighter, and lower profile but glare and godrays are just terrible. this patent seems to suggest they are improving on this:

"
Abstract

There are provided a Fresnel lens and a method of manufacturing the Fresnel lens which can suppress a flare which is generated in an image visually recognized through the Fresnel lens so as to extend toward a center of a lens."

Probably not going to be compatible. Only the Nvidia 20 series non super cards got a usb c port with the bandwidth capable of doing VR. Unless Sony is using compression, which i’m seriously doubting. If it is compressing to hevc Sony would need to release pc software like oculus has for link/airlink.

Couldn't it work on PC with more compression in this case? It would be worse than on PS5, but good enough for those (like me) who would use it primarily on PS5.

Imagine making an awesome VR headset like this and then blowing it all by not making it wireless. I don't understand how they can stumble on the finish line like that. Wired VR is the past, wireless is the future (and the present, honestly). Had it been wireless my hype for this would have been 10/10, now it's like 6/10. Might seem nitpicky to some, but this makes a HUGE difference. With room-scale 360 degree experiences you really don't want a cable to get tangled up in, it takes you right out of it.

And no, it wouldn't necessarily have to make the headset a lot more expensive. Quest 2 does great wireless VR over regular WiFi.
One wire is at least a bit more manageable than the monstrosity of needing 4 HDMI cables last gen but yeah still Quest 2 having a great holiday is going to kill the market share unless PS5 supply ramps up. Quest 3 can probably beat it spec wise and be 100% wireless. I’ll still maybe get one if exclusives are good enough but otherwise everything 3rd party will be on Quest.

And hell, if they port their 1st party stuff to PC you get it wireless on Quest with a PC if you have a strong one. But that all remains to be seen of course.

Sony or someone else would have to release software that would encode to hevc. We also don' know if the psvr 2 has a chip on board that can decode hevc. It might just rely on the ps5 for all processing while the tracking is obviously done in headset.

I mean this PSVR 2 has HDR. They better do something about that glare and rays.
