There's nothing worse than a good game that just doesn't know when to end

Far from the worst example IMO but Final Fantasy VII remake.

Could have ended after escape from Shinra HQ, but nooo had to do the silly bit

Did enjoy the game but some of the fat could have been trimmed up some.

Most recently I felt TLOU2 was a bit too long.

Persona 5 was far too long, and I never finished it.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
I saw the thread title, and immediately thought of Tales of Arise. Was going to post in here about that game, but it turns out that's what prompted the OP in the first place.

So... Tales of Arise, the thread.

We ain't outta here in ten minutes, we won't need no rocket to fly through space
I will never ever go back and finish the final 1/3 of Okami. That game has no business being 30 hours long.

Depends on the game.

I think a game that can pull off a big climax in "act 2" to take it all back down...then ramp up to act 3 can truly feel epic.

JRPGs, RPGs and open world Action-RPGs should never be longer than 30 hours. Action games should never be longer than 15 hours (usually, even 10 hours are too much).

There are plenty of games to play if you want to play endlessly, either online games or games that have no real end like Football Manager or Civilization/Stellaris etc.

There's no need to pad story-driven single-player games that much.
I'm glad nobody cares about your opinion! I like my JRPGS long!!!

DQ11 for me. I enjoyed my time with it, but I've been holding off on a replay with the definitive edition just because I now know how long the game is.

Windwaker - The thread.

The triforce fetch quest was annoying. Get map piece. Get 400 odd rupes. Get the map translated. Find piece. Do this 8 times. ugh.

Would also argue that Metal gear solid did this with the PAN card junk at the end that made you back track.

How's the DLC? Should I just stop what I'm doing and go right to the DLC to freshen things up?
I did a couple missions of act 3 until it felt like everything was a little calmer, did the DLC, then came back to wrap up the story.

there were a couple of weird dialogue moments, but it broke things up nicely.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Alien Isolation

TLOU2

Hades (with its grind to get to the epilogue)

AC Valhalla (some mandatory story arcs should’ve been optional)

Oddly enough, Persona 5 Royal’s 120h runtime didn’t bother me at all. Probably because it’s a more passive experience with all its dialogues and story stuff; made the experience less demanding.

I'm usually happy if a game that i like is 100 hours long instead of 50, but yeah sometimes the game has not enough content or quality to endure for that much time.

Single player games spreading themselves too thin for the time investment is why I have such short patience for them these days. Even games I used to consider no fail like Zelda don't respect your time at all.

Agree with OP. Pacing is key and especially lately I‘ve played too many games felt like they are finished and then dragged on nevertheless. Like:

- TLOU 2
- Alien Isolation
- RDR 1+2
- Far Cry 3

I have no problems with longer games and all of the above would have been fine with they playtime but it‘s such a bore when you are given the feeling that the story is at an end but then it goes like…. But hold on, there is more. Destroys the whole game. Movies do that too some times. I mean, I really love Casino Royale for instance but the whole final scene in Italy feels tacked on... If there is more to the story, fine, but tell it kn a different way then.

I hate fake endings but didn't feel like The Witcher 3 had the problem. The pacing was a bit off mid-game but not the end.
When it gets to Novigrad and the bits with Dandelion is where the game starts to drag, its fine after that though

Yeah I don’t like it, I don’t like slow starters either, I loved RDR2 but it felt like it took 10 hours before it even started and half the game had tutorials and they could’ve ended it perfectly with Arthur.

I loved DQ 11, and really would like to play the special edition, but I don't have that much time in my life to replay so much of the same game. The same goes with Persona 5 Royale. I love both, but that's just too much of a time investment for me.

Exactly. I have played the game through twice now and the Dandelion quest line is such a drag.

For various reasons I don't feel that kind of thing often. But one of the few that I felt clearly overstayed its welcome was Shadow Warrior.

I love the game but still haven't finished it: Psychonauts 2. I was having a good time, but where I stopped, it just kept giving me cut scenes and kept going way past where I think it should have. I'll go back to it, but burned out on in.

Yeah, this is a problem with too many games. I might be wrong, but I feel like the 360/PS3 generation was better at this.

I have to force myself to finish a lot of games these days and I'm getting real sick of it. Currently trying to finish Assassins Creed Valhalla and it's almost hard to believe how much of that game is fluff.

Edit: I feel like half of the minor objectives in Halo Infinite (rescue squads over and over) are also just padding, it's fine but you could remove it and it means nothing. And the Far Cry games, jesus christ.

Yeah, there are 2-3 missions too many in that game, and the cutscene pacing is annoying. It's the sort of game that will give you a cutscene, let you play for 10 minutes, and launch you into another cutscene. You feel trapped in the narrative.

Tales of Arise, Last of Us 2, and Ghost of Tsushima are some of my fave games of the past couple years and I felt that way with those 3. I spent the last few hours of all three titles wishing it would just end already.

And it’s not just those 3, but they came to mind(Control was another one actually)…the last Dragon Quest and Ni No Kuni 2 also. All good games I loved, they just needed to wrap that shxt up a bit better imo lol.

This is what killed pretty much any enjoyment I initially found in Assassin's Creed: Valhalla

That was my one complaint with Guardians of the Galaxy. Not that the game is bad, but the depth in its design/mechanics is not enough to justify its length. And I don't necessarily believe I would have noticed it as much had the game been shorter. In every other aspect though, it is still one of this year's best!

Hear, I'm just leaving Knowhere for the second time and the game is like "Ok, this should be heading to the end now... psych bitch, we're going hunting". I'm 15h in and while I'm having a lot of fun and I feel this is not a bad length at all for an action game, I can see the padding.

For me I experienced this issue with Days Gone. Just when I thought I finished the game (and I enjoyed it immensely), BAM - last chapter out of nowhere, only tangentially related to the main story, undoing plot points that have been there all along, and generally feeling like the 12th season of that show you liked so much during the first two.

That's sadly the issue with most games nowadays, especially AAA ones which aim for the price tag first and foremost and then desperately try to fill the story with something that's more than 3-5h for which no one will be willing to pay 70$.

That's the biggest flaw of modern game development, it takes 5-6 years to make a 70$ game you'll finish once and forget about it, and most likely finish it with a bad impression because of how bad the pacing was or how dragged the whole experience was, or you won't even finish it at all because of it, so the and impression will be that you thrown out 70$ for something that's garbage...

IMO the devs should be making shorter, but much more compelling games that are wrapped up in those 4-5h but are made within just 2 years and cost 20-25$, so that in the same 6 year timeframe you spend the same money but not on just one but three different titles, and ones that are actually great.

This is why I started to love indies so much, because they end up before all the the hype/excitement wears off, so you finish the games with fantastic impression, and hence are more likely going to replay them agan, especially knowing it's just a few hours journey instead of 20, 30, 50, 80 etc. like it is in all those boring-ass open-world walking sims nowadays.
