What games do you wish you enjoyed? But sadly don't

We all have games that we purchase and obviously we want to enjoy these games, but sadly we just can't get into them.

Or maybe you see a game getting non stop praise online and you like the look of it, and you go out and buy it and sadly it just isn't for you.

Or all your online gaming friends are really into an online multiplayer game, but you honestly don't enjoy it, it sucks that you are not enjoying it as much as your buddies.

I really want to like Hellblade, it's a nice looking game with great audio, but I find the combat really dull and I absolutely hate the puzzle design (matching symbols with the environment stuff), I played till just after the first boss and stopped for years and recently forced myself to finish it (I absolutely loved DmC and Enslaved by ninja theory too)
& after seeing the hellblade 2 trailer, it just makes me wish I liked hellblade, as it looks incredible. 😦

Gravity Rush on psvita it just looked incredible, loved the art style and visuals, but I really disliked the floating around and gyro controls, I dropped this one pretty quickly and moved onto YS on the vita.

Blue Dragon I absolutely adored lost odyssey by mistwalker, I went out and purchased this straight after, but I couldn't get into it at all, combat felt so long and I think I dropped it after a few hours(what's odd as I love turn base jrpgs usually) , even the great Phil Spencer told me during a game of vermintide 2 that he preferred blue dragon over lost odyssey  (maybe I'll give this another try sometimes, as it's backwards compatible)

Guardians of the Galaxy, I love the films, I really like the characters, story, voice acting, but the gameplay bores me to death, despite the initial very positive feeling towards the game, the combat is not good, it's very easy/boring.
I feel like I'm forcing myself through the last couple chapters now, to see how it end, really disappointed by this one. Update: just finished this game now, I was a little harsh, it's a solid 6/10 game, but it does drag at times.

Nier Automata, is sadly one off the dullest games, I have ever played, very simple boring combat, invisible walls everywhere, very dull grey looking 360 era environments, absolute nonsense story, that is nowhere near as deep as people will have you believe, I'm more annoyed I played through this rubbish 3 times to get the true ending/1000gs, as my buddy kept saying it gets better, you got to do all three playthroughs to understand, the OST is excellent though, but I am annoyed I grabbed this for £35 when it intially landed on Xbox due to all the hype and praise I saw around the game.

Feel free to post your games below you wish you liked :)

Forza horizon. I've tried most games and I just can't get into them. I love cars and realistic /semi-realisric games but Horizon always puts me off. I don't know if it's the cringe festival or the chaotic map with a million icons, but even the driving itself feels lifeless and boring. I have to switch car every 5 minutes to add variety, otherwise I quit.

But give me Forza motorsport, GT or Driveclub and I can play for hours with a single car doing just time trials.

Honestly, all of them these days. There just isn't much excitement in gaming these days or anything groundbreaking. Its the same shit thrown in with some gimmicks. At least for many serious games the story writing has gotten so much better throughout the years with interesting narratives for multiple characters. But then you get bloat with some games that wear out their welcome.

Hades - after all the praise, I picked it up expecting to be met with the second coming, and just couldn't get into it. The characters irritated me, and I didn't like the voice acting or the art style. I played on-and-off for a couple of weeks, got to the third area and dropped it, never to go back

Control is a recent one,saw gameplay and thought I'd enjoy it,didn't really hit the right highs for me.

Vanquish is a cult classic that everyone praises and is fun at points, the games flaws are just too much. Entire meter emptying after a melee what? No way to quickly regain it,something like Niohs ki burst would have improved it a lot and kept the pace up.

Rise of the Tomb Raider is mostly a slog.

Bayonetta, good game but the camera is horrible and this is from someone who enjoys Souls games.

Witcher 3. Too much talking heads and dialogue with the gameplay being woefully tied to looking at the minimap for navigation.

I might give this one still another try with some mods.
I think the point of The Witcher 3 is the experience, not the gameplay. Dialogue are an huge part of that. If you expect to have fun for the gameplay, it's not the game for you imo.

I could never get into Civilization. Tried 4 (very late) and 6. I complete the tutorial and scout for a while then stop playing.

Strategy games as a whole might not be my thing. Might be because there's too much going on. Warcraft / Starcraft and Dawn of War are the only ones I ever completed. Mainly because of the heroes, story, and faster pace.

Out of curiosity, did you play Returnal?
Really enjoying Returnal myself, not tried Hades yet.

- Cinematics/games with too many hours of cutscenes/videos/talking
Everybody keeps telling me how great they are, but i can't stand it. If i turn on my console, i just want to play, not watch tv and if i would skip all the Netflix stuff, the games won't work anymore/are pointless.

- Souls and Soulslike games
I actually like the style and i like challenging games in general. But Souls games just feel like a huge timesink. Exception: I really liked Lords of the Fallen, with the fair savepoints you could try the bosses without having to grind stuff or clear trash again and again.

- Superhero games
I'm so oversaturated with superhero shit, i don't even give the games a chance anymore. If i hear Guardians, Spiderman, Wonderwoman, Avengers or whatever i instantly want to puke and would rather visit the dentist. Actually sad, because in my childhood i liked superhero games, but cinema and general omnipresence ruined it for me. Exception: Batman

-Sports games
I love watching football, UFC or basketall and so on and really would like to love the games, but i don't. 5 minutes and i'm done. Exception: Forza Horizon

-Farming Simulator
I can watch it for hours on Youtube, but if i play it myself i'm bored after 5 minutes.

I dont think anyone is prasing the gameplay. It is kinda shit but the voice/story compensates for it. Same with Hellblade. As for Nier Auto, besides the environments looking like they came straight out of a 2007 game, everything else is top notch there. You might be looking for games that are the complete package and the games you mentioned all of them have one incredible weak spot which gets ignored becuase the rest is above good.

As for my opinion, generally I have to go with most games in the rogue-like genre. They are a huge hit on Steam for example and looking at Returnal so are they on consoles but I can never praise them and it's not the difficulty but it's the story. They lack it. Hades changed that and it's one of the few exceptions but the rest, just can't bother. No idea if Returnal has a good story cuz I have not played it yet.

Returnal

Loved the setting, graphics, and general ambiance of it all, but the game is way too difficult for me. Had to drop it after I kept getting demolished by the first boss, after making my way all the way back to him time and time again.

From Software games. I tried to play Bloodburne and Demons souls remake but I really can't stand the control and the inventory system. It's not for me.
Same here. And the insane difficulty. I enjoyed Demon's Souls a lot and recommended it to all the gaming friends I had at the time, and Dark Souls was also pretty good. But having tried Dark Souls again recently, I couldn't even get passed the knight on the bottom of the castle (not the huge boss with the black shield). Only had so much patience with all the frequent dying. And like you said, the inventory and control system is a huge pain.

Dragon Age Origins. I wish I liked it as much as some people seem to. But I'm a dirty ape that only really likes Inquisition.

Also I got like 70% of the way through Persona 4 Golden but couldn't finish. I played it after enjoying 5 and the dungeons put me off

Halo Infinite - The core gameplay is extremely solid and the grappling hook is a total game changer, some boss fights are cool too, but the open world lacks variety and there aren’t enough enemy variety and not enough cool exploration rewards. I wanted to love it but as of right now I really don’t. Still haven’t finished it though, maybe it gets better.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade - The character design is spot on, scenery perfect, music is full of lovely nostalgia, but the combat is so bad and it feels more like a janky action slasher than a strategic and awesome RPG. I’ll still try to finish it because of the story sequence but I’m not enjoying the gameplay, feels like a button masher with camera issues.

I don't know, I feel like the gameplay is most important part, if I am not enjoying that, then it doesn't matter how great everything else, if it feels like a chore to play for me.
I forgot to mention how great the 80s music is too.
I wouldn't say it is a bad game as I can imagine most people will love the game, I just find it disappointing as I was pretty excited for it.

Nier again, I just don't like the gameplay, story or world sadly, love the OST though and shoot em up sections though.

Same.

I really enjoyed it at first (I went in only hearing it was really good), but the novelty of the system wore off quite quickly. When I found out that the main goal was to finish it in as few attempts as possible, I just dropped it. Got fed up with repeating the same levels again and again too.

If he loves it so much he should give Sakaguchi more money.

It's been 10 years since Mistwalker did console development. Sadly.

EDIT:

As for me, Metal Gear Solid as a whole and Monster Hunter, for sure.

all them. that's probably just depression though. i can go weeks without playing a game. i went 2 weeks there without playing Halo and I haven't loaded up SMTV in about a month. i think they are great games from what i've played so i ain't hating on them...it can be any game I'm just using them as an example. it requires a huge effort to sit down and play them but when I manage that i can play them for hours. it's not just games but books/tv and everything else pretty much.

i'm at the point now i'm planning to finish Halo/SMTV, however long it takes, and then the only games I'll buy in 2022 will probably be Elden Ring, Hogwarts Legacy, and BOTW2 (if it comes out in 2022). It takes me months to finish a game so I might only be able to manage 2-3 games in a year. I'm done spending money on my PC and will probably pick up a Series X to replace it at some point if there are anymore games i want to play. I also have a PS2 + PS4 with games I want to play but there's no way I will get through them all. I've been thinking about selling the PS2 + PS4. There are loads of games i'd love to play but again I probably could only manage 2-3 a year so i need to be really picky what to buy.

I did! I really enjoyed the gameplay in Returnal, but Biome 3 tore me a new one and I've not managed to get past it.

I think, having 2 kids and gaming time being fairly limited, the rogue games don't gel with me. I get so far, I die, I'm booted back to the beginning, and can't face or don't have the time/patience for another run.

I wished Halo Infinite had snow and lava levels. Was expecting it, never happened. Also, I saw Ghost of Tsushima as a huge SLOG.

Tried to play several Zelda Titles, couldn't get into any of them

Elder Scrolls titles, Just not for me

Control The confusing map layout and the long load times turned me off. Maybe I'll give this one another chance on PS5, SX at some point

MGSV The phantom pain. I'm a die hard MGS fan, I just couldn't click with this at all. The open world just felt baron, and the story non existent.

Mario Galaxy 2 just after playing the 1st - i hated the hub.
New Super Mario U.
Mario 3D world just after playing 3D land.
Any 3D Zelda after OOT.
Wii Sports U.
Smash on WiiU after playing the 3DS version.

Yeah this is my problem as well, still extremely interested in Returnal but I can’t see myself buying it at full price since I know there is a big risk I’ll rage quit and drop it. They should have a parent mode, can still make it extremely difficult and randomize maps but with standard reboot from the start of the area at death.

The Last Guardian.

My God what a disappointment. Couldn't stand the controls, performance, and general sloppiness of it all.

I so badly wanted to like that game.

GTA.

I've tried GTA3 on PS2 and GTA4 on 360. Never could get into them. The sloppy and clunky controls and frame rate were gamebreakers.

Maybe GTA5 on Series X is butter smooth. Not sure.

I agree on Nier, such a waste of time. Almost fall sleep multiple times.
One saga that pains to me that I didn't like is Zelda, well except for BOTW.
I tried all zelda games but 6 hours in I got super bored. Nothing is redeemable; the gameplay is super simple and easy, dialogue is unfunny and uninteresting, plot is non-existing, pacing is predictable and samey, puzzles for a 4 grader and the list goes on.

Apart from BOTW I only liked the first one on Nes, in my opinion, simplicity suits better that kind of game.

From Software games. I tried to play Bloodburne and Demons souls remake but I really can't stand the control and the inventory system. It's not for me.

Nice, you tried 2 games out of +60 that FS made. So that "From Software games" doesn't make any sense.

All the Soulslike games…love the lore and atmosphere, just can’t get into the gameplay for some reason. Bloodborne I almost completed. I did however, grab the Dark Souls trilogy from the Steam sale just in case I want to give it another go.

Outer Worlds is definitely on my "I thought I'd like this much more" list. And the "flaws" mechanic is just incredibly stupid - the way it is implemented, in theory it could have been interesting.

All of the zelda games. The games are great, are all artistically beautiful in their own way, and the stories are good. But i can never play and feel entertained by it. Which has sadly left me not finishing several of them and barely even renting them.

Also Gran Turismo, Forza, any Sim racing game. Besides the Burnout series i could never get into any of them. I guess i have a taste for arcade style racers, because burnout, Crash team racing, and mario kart I've played and enjoyed alot.

Playing Zelda on NES and SNES was fun as a kid. But once I started playing PC adventure games, Zelda games were laughably simple and cute.

Oddly, I found Zelda II the best Zelda out of the 3 I played. Yet, it seems people hated Zelda II the most. I thought it was great and much more challenging than Zelda 1 and the SNES game.

I REALLY struggled with Biome 3 but a couple of amazing gaffers here pointed me in the right direction and it made a HUGE difference and subsequently I beat Biome3.

Go for protection over damage!
Use the high level Rot gun for damage over time.

I promise you, stick with it and it’s not as difficult as you think right now. 👍

Has to be Souls games. It's not so much the difficulty, because I really enjoyed Returnal while still finding it too difficult, but that they're just so BORING.

Everything in the game is hidden behind endless layers of stats, pointless drivelling "lore" or some other kind of needless complexity or opacity. It is, undeniably, difficult and obscure just for the sake of being difficult and obscure. Who the fuck decided that that's now a good thing?
