Cyberpunk quest director Pawel Sasko explains why there are no police chases

Should have just said they defunded the police. That would settle it.
Funny thing. According to the lore of the game that i've picked up, the NCPD is actually quite demoralized.

It got privatized because the mayor had no interest in an entity that brought no profits + corporations pushed for the NCPD's defuding because they wanted to sell their own private security.

Police chasing you for a crime is copying GTA???

giphy.gif
Yeah basically. Can you think of any other open world crime games where that happens that aren't GTA clones?

Feels like a really dumb thing to pick on.

Based on the game itself, if you consider Deus Ex or The Wicther 3 to be RPGs, then this is also an RPG. Thats really all that matters.
I mean, you're the one picking. You called out a Twitter intern with the GOG page that said the same thing as the Twitter page. At the end of the day the listed genre doesn't matter.

i wouldn't call Cyberpunk an RPG along the lines of Witcher. Cyberpunk is way too shallow in its narrative to be an RPG. CDPR knew it which is why they changed the description of the game.

Curious Twitch User: Hey Pawel, why there's no police chases in the game?
Pawel: Well lets be realistic...you dont have police chases in Elden Ring
Pawel: Checkmate

Another one from the future: Hey Pawel, why do lifepaths suck? why they dont matter except for the first 10 minutes?
Pawel: Well lets be realistic..you dont have lifepaths in The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild
Pawel: Checkmate..again.

Another one from the past: Hey Pawel..Why does the A.I suck and acts dumb
Pawel: We could have made them smart but that will not be realistic now.

This guy gives the worst possible answers. And joking aside, we can sense from the way he answers those questions that he is not sure of the wording he choses, you can see he stutters and doesnt want to mess up with the management.

The way you can influence the story is about on the same level as Witcher 3, if not deeper.
If you think CP2077 is shallow in that regard, so should be the witcher 3, or even Deus Ex.

Quest Director Pawel Sasko got asked this on one of his recent streams, and the first portion of his answer pushes back against the idea that “all” open world games have a system like this. He brings up the upcoming Sonic open world game and Elden Ring as open world games that won’t have police chases. He cites GTA and Watch Dogs as two of the only games he can think of that have that system.

The second part of the clip that got caught off does get into an actual explanation of why they didn’t have a police chase system. Sasko says it was a combination of the technical limitations of the engine, and not enough time to make it work before release, so it was something that they eventually just gave up on, which is how we got the current system which teleports police to you, and never has gangs chase you down outside of the little clusters you can provoke on the map.

Some rumors about what Cyberpunk 2077 has planned for the future indicate that an overhaul of this system may be in the works. Though that could be a range of things, like more police/gang aggression, and it’s hard to imagine we might reach a point where we have actual car chases, a mechanic that is 100% absent in the game currently.

^^ This looks to me like a case of "gamers" turning into a hive mind and thinking if the developers did not name all these other titles that I know exist then they must not be aware or are being deliberately misleading/deceiving etc etc etc. I mean come on guys. He's most likely live streaming that and wasn't able to name every title possible on the spot but the point he was getting at was clear or should have been. I didn't need to dig any deeper into what he was saying to understand it. Given the setting of the game, should they have added car chases? Sure....now I haven't played the game to the finish but if the game and story they were telling didn't require "cop/car" chases then they don't necessarily need to include it but would it have made their game stand out? Sure, yes, ofcourse.

It honestly doesn't. In fact, i'd say it'd just make things needlessly annoying.

The core of the game are the quests. Police or gangs chasing you around while you just want to get missions done would be plain bothersome.

Oblivion and Skyrim both have a more sophisticated law enforcement system. They will chase the player down to arrest them and set bounties. Hell, you can even bribe them and be sent to jail. I could list more but you would accuse them of being "a GTA clone".

I wouldn't call Oblivion 'stop there criminal scum' or Skyrim sophisticated, when a horse can inform on your crimes and you're hacked apart in the streets for stepping on a chicken. There's no law enforcement system in the Witcher 3, but witcher is a way better game.

And yes, I'd call all those games set in the modern day GTA clones. Saints Row, Mafia, Sleeping Dogs etc. Just because they did doesn't mean that Cyberpunk has to.

Skyrim? Hell you got people who have made mods based on the guards behavior in Skyrim since it worked so well for the time lol. Its no way to excuse this man its just shitty

It's not even worth debating you if you're going to accuse every open-world game set in a modern setting a "GTA clone" And yes, it is more sophisticated or at least layered for more options to interact with. The cops in Cyberpunk are fucking brain dead and literally teleport out of nowhere. They do jack shit except for shooting you. At least in Skyrim and Oblivion, you can interact with the guards in more meaningful ways and those games aren't even about being a criminal.

This discussion was not about "if it would make for a better game" the discussion is about how poorly implemented it was and how plenty of its contemporary ( and past) open-world games do it better. This is why it looks embarrassing for CDPR. You're just moving the goal post now. You also claimed, "police have nothing to do with this game" when the entire setting of the game is to be a gangbanging criminal in a crime-ridden city. When you first play as a street kid, the very first thing that happens to you is getting arrested.

The police have plenty to do in the story. Which is the thing that everyone seems to completely ignore when they're complaining about Cyberpunk. They seem to be under the impression that it's a dumb open world sandbox simulator where you just fuck around killing civies for no reason. The narrative makes up 95% of the whole thing, and has zero to do with the way the police react when you randomly start throwing grenades around in the street for no reason. People have just latched onto that aspect because they saw the teleporting police in a youtube video. It's like complaining about the lizard AI behaviour in Shadow of the Colossus.

So what is it? Do the police have everything to do with the story or nothing to do with the game? I mean, honestly, dude, come on. Also, to answer your question it would have made for a better game.

They even tried to implement a wanted system, which means it's a "GTA clone" by your logic.

I like how people latch on to pointless stuff like police chases when comparing Cyberpunk to GTA, while also completely ignoring the stuff the game does much better.

Mission and game design? Cyberpunk is miles ahead GTA. Combat? Way way better.
Heck, people talk about how the AI sucks while also seemlingly forgetting GTA AI's during missions is completely on rails. Wanna do a mission in GTA with stealth? Tough luck, its only stealthy when the game wants it to be stealthy.

The worse part is that the things Cyberpunk does better are actually meaningful to the game. I mean, how much do people actually spend fucking around with the police in these games? Only time i do is when i grow bored of playing.

I was talking about the scripted events in the story, which work. You're talking about the janky open world implentation of the police that only happens if you kill random people on the street. Yeah that bit is really janky, but on a normal playthrough of the game you never have any reason to do that.

They didn't have police chases because the police will cause more damage than the player ever will. (Because the ai driver will ram into everything.)

This is very bizarre to me, I had no idea. If the goal is to make the most immersive city to date and you can’t have people chase you in cars… obligatory Grand Theft Auto 3 yada yada.

I was waiting for the initial let down to pass over so I could go into this with a fresh perspective. Haven’t tried it yet, and while I’m sure there is fun to be had, I’m still lacking motivation.

I only recommend you mainly do the story missions and side-character stories. Everything else, I wouldn’t bother much with.

Cyberpunk sucks. It's a half baked mish mash of genres that can't manage to do much of anything right, let alone be a fun or compelling game experience. They spent EIGHT YEARS developing this game , yet somehow, it feels like they spent less than a third of that time doing anything that ended up in the game. It launched a year ago and still feels unfinished, and almost certainly always will.
XSX/PS5 versions?
Multiplayer?
Just a goddamned grift at this point, and anyone defending it is either far too easily amused or in complete denial about being a boot licking dipshit.

Why is so complicated to say "we needed more time, we fucked up and probably mismanaging". I mean, it's the basic element of any crime open world. May be the game si very good in some parts, the should have focus in the important things and not in that "detective mini game".

The overall polish, story, acting, AI, open world, physics, music, and breath of content. Combat is slightly better in CP 2077 and visuals are better but that's about it.
Polish: GTA >>> CP

Story: GTA =< CP (depends which GTA you're refering to)

Acting: GTA == CP (recent ones at least)

AI: GTA ~= CP (GTA open world AI is better, CP mission AI is better)

Open World: GTA ~= CP (GTA open world is better as a sandbox to play around, CP open world is better for fighting and combat)

music: GTA ?=? CP (both have amazing music, but personal taste also plays a role)

Breath of content GTA <<< CP (still can't understand how people can say "theres nothing to do in Cyberpunk!!" when you're stumbling into stuff every 10 feet you walk. CP definitelly has far more meaningful content than any GTA game)

Combat GTA <<<<<<<<<<<<<<< CP ("Slightly better"? Way to underplay it. In fact, this comparison isn't because cyberpunk has some sort of extraordinary combat, but because gta's sucks way too much)

I'm not even trying to say Cyberpunk is some ultra amazing game that deserves to go down in history, thats very subjective.
All i'm saying is that neither are newer GTA games, and its a joke how people try to use it to underplay cyberpunk when cyberpunk gets right far more things than modern GTA does.

Oh please, GTA V's game design is years behind even its earlier games

Mission: Kill Devin Weston
Mission failed: You killed Devin Weston

Oh please, Cyberpunk has shit mission design. 90% of your "choices" are false and end up as the same result. Even TW3 has waaay better missions than CP 2077. We are comparing apples to oranges anyway. I would rather play GTA 5 any day of the week. Cyperpuck fails as an engaging RPG and as an action-oriented open world. Its mediocre combat can't make up for all of its disappointing aspects.

"Shitty mission design"
Maelstrom Heist from act 1:
-Go into war with Maelstrom because you refused to pay
-Pay the Maelstrom with spiked chip you got from Meredith resulting in war with them and possible "hot" interaction with her later on (that also gives you a legendary item)
-Pay Maelstrom with your own money and fight Militech together with them
-Hack spiked chip you got from Meredith to get rid of the virus and pay Maelstrom with it, fight militech together with them.

Completely random side quest: Find woman cop in a market street and make her drop a investigation.
-Pay someone to give you info - or find her yourself.
-Locate apartment
-Open door with tech ability and look through the PC at the security office for the number of her room - or find an alternative route through the window.
-Convince her to drop the case - or fail to do so and shoot her to death instead.
(so much for "false" choices :^P)

Meanwhile in rockstar land
-Park your car here - or mission failed because you parked the car in the wrong place.

The case of cyberpunk is embarrassing, I understand that the marketing team must lie to sell, but this game was a scam like never before seen in the industry and they still have the face to go out and justify or explain why this or that thing It is not in the game. The media and influencers were also exposed for the marketing tools that they are.

In GTA V the only choice you get is in the very last mission. All the others fail you if you walk more than five feet away from the designated path. What are you smoking?

This mission is one, of if not the only mission in the game that is that open ended. It's like they made one good mission to show off, then said screw it to the rest.

95% of the missions are doing menial tasks with no branching paths.

Oh boy, here we go again. For such a shit game, it lives rent free on these forums. A new post at least once a week on average.

I think I interacted with the police maybe once while playing. I guess I tend to actually role play RPGs, so I am not fucking around running over pedestrians or shooting shop keepers just to see what happens. Maybe that is why I actually enjoyed the game, I wasn't trying to break it then complain when it actually breaks.

Can you not read? Did I say the mission design was better in GTA? I said I would rather play GAT V any day of the week because it is overall the much better game. Most missions in CP are very rigid too, some are pretty stand out, but lost in the sea of repetitive mediocrity. Strick mission design has always been a criticism of Rockstart for me. That still doesn't change the fact that I think they are fun to play.

The only one here smoking is you, my friend.

Thank you for this.

I made this point many of times and it seems people kept making it sound like a fucking city with crime would have no place with police officers that can drive cars.....in a game with cars. The limitations of the engine also tells me 100% yet again...Ubiosoft would have made the better game.

They'd also pick a fucking engine that can do the concept they are even working on vs "lets just throw millions at this and see how it go doe". This is incompetence of the highest levels I've ever seen in gaming of any big publisher.
"He brings up the upcoming Sonic open world game and Elden Ring as open world games that won’t have police chases.''
Confused Wait What GIF

Thank you lol (slow clap)

I knew I wasn't the only one not buying that bullshit that "its a different game doe", they made a game in a city with cars, crime, gangs and the ability to drive cars, we can stop pretending that cops driving cars or gangs chasing you in cars in the open world was not to be expected or something.

This game was released 2 years too soon, honestly.

Maybe, maybe not. I now don't even really know if 2 years would matter if the team is directed by slow people and a publisher asking for something basically impossible with that engine. Consider they had years to make this game, yet it lacks even the most basic features found in Watchdogs 3, a game made in half the time.

They didn't need more time, they needed a smarter publisher that gave the resources to actually roll out a game like this in a timely manner in the first place.

As in, use a fucking engine that works for the concept, hire 1200 instead of 500.

To question if it can be done, is to pretend 3 fucking Watchdogs games didn't just come out lol I'd agree with this really if NO other game had those elements, but what they lacked was so common, the very same year several games had those elements lol So at first I did think maybe they need more time, but if you have a publisher that doesn't want to fund the team right, forces an engine to do something it can't, does it matter that we are talking about 2 more years if even this 1 year has then struggling with a damn next gen patch? Time is a factor, but here I don't know if its the main one anymore, its simply the publisher at this point.

Witcher 3 was broken as fuck at launch, it amazes me how easily people forgot this, probably because many of its current fans only played a long time afterwards. To this day there are still some broken quests which i had to fail on purpose because they couldn't be progressed further.
Overall mechanics and game design were also highly improved in cyberpunk, Witcher 3's gameplay was a complete joke.

This 100%. I'm mad too as someone that bought Witcher 3 day 1, I watched people bash AC Unity the year prior only to then ignore people flying, missing faces, horse can't cross the bridge lol its like....you hate buggy games right? Why was W3 getting a pass that AC Unity wasn't given? I'm not even arguing for AC Unity to get a pass, simply that the media and gaming community should have kept that same energy about W3's release. We probably wouldn't even be in the situation we are in right now with CP2077 if people really brought up those issues.

My favorite is when you steal from someones house in Witcher 3 and they'll just look at you smiling and shit and you talk to them and they give you this 1 liner lol Then gamers are like "SKYRIM DESTORYER" lol

Some of you are debating GTA games that get 90%+ scores to 2077 which got scores in the 50s on last gen consoles. And 2077 is as good or better? Gimme a break.

Even the PC version(the best version) got in the mid 80s. Good score, but not hall of fame worthy.
