Bond Producer on Craig’s Replacement: “ I don’t think a woman should play James Bond”

“I think it will be a man because I don’t think a woman should play James Bond,” she explains. “I believe in making characters for women and not just having women play men’s roles. I don’t think there are enough great roles for women, and it’s very important to me that we make movies for women about women. He should be British, so British can be any [ethnicity or race].”

And Amazon will have no say in it:
“Michael and I are very protective of [Bond],” she says. “My father used to say, ‘Don’t have temporary people make permanent decisions,’ and I think that’s always been at the forefront of our minds. Studios can have tremendous turnover, and over the years we’ve had lots and lots of different people. So we’ve had to kind of maintain a consistency of leadership in order to keep an eye on the longevity of the franchise.”

Good on them.

But internet harpies will never quit attacking. They can only destroy, never create. They don't know pity, or remorse, or fear. And they absolutely will no stop, ever, until James Bond as a cishet white man is dead.

Well she says right there he doesn't have to be white, just British.

This is exactly how to handle IP with a history and relevance. That she needs to say this shows you how the mob wants everything either canceled or changed to fit an agenda. And its already getting old.

Hope Henry Cavil gets to be the next Bond.
Yeah, I am hopeful Cavil would give us a similar Bond to Dalton's, if the producers play it that way and he gets cast. He has the physicality of Craig but the classic "leading man" Bond looks, of Dalton, Brosnan and Connery.

I thought Cavill was great in Man from UNCLE and MI Fallout, but he's 38 and I'd be surprised if they want to go that old. I mean, if he's 38 now he might be 41 by the time they start shooting his first movie, and just ask Daniel Craig how tough they are on the body.

I think they'll go for a relative unknown.

He's the same age Craig was when he started. And if they stick to the "every two years" tradition instead of taking such long breaks like they did with Craig, he probably wouldn't be 53 when they end his run.

Glad to hear they’re shooting that idea down. The gender swap trend is tired and hasn’t really worked out for Hollywood. A move like that would only create controversy while only appealing to a small group of people.

A black Bond is fine as long as he’s British. Idris Elba is perfect for the role. Dude oozes cool.

He's almost 50 now though. Too old to start as Craig is retiring from it at 53.
I didn’t realize he was that old. Yeah, probably not the best long term choice. Still wouldn’t mind seeing a short run with him since you know he would crush it.

Id father a female fight club. R rating. Not that Paul Fieg shit neither.

Keep James, a James. Just make a movie in that world, about a female agent. Why is this such a difficult concept ?

James Bond has to be a man and British. That's all there is to it. Wanna change that? Fine. Just do not call it James Bond then. Be ready for massive fan backlash ala Ghostbusters 2016 as well, otherwise.

The series is still very rooted in it's tradition and expectations. While the recent Craig ones deviated from past expectations and had some actual continuity within his films and gave him some humanity and character development, it still maintained what fans expect and want. I applaud the producers for sticking to their guns and not giving into current movie tropes.

Broccoli and Wilson likely already have the successor chosen but are just letting Craig have his well-deserved farewell. 100-1 it will be an actor that is largely unknown to the mainstream. I feel they tend to want actors that are lesser known these days so fans wont have any preconceived notions of the actor already. (Moore and Brosnan nonwithstanding.)

It's an exciting time as a Bond fan, to see the next chapter of the franchise move forward with a new actor. I'll miss Craig. He was really great and definitely proved his worth in the role. SIlenced the doubters with Casino Royale within minutes. (I was skeptical but he blew me away in that.)

We'll see where they go next.

They've already said as much. They said they're going to let Craig have his farewell, which means nothing until long after the home video release of No Time to Die.

We'll probably learn who the next Bond is by the Fall, and his first movie could be late 2023 or in 2024.

Thats right. The franchise shouldnt be handed over to females. Create a new "Bond" like movie that features a women and continue on that if its a success.

IMO the last good Bond movie was the first Kingsman movie. I realize the origins of the IP are kinda an unlikable cocky spy, but Craig's Bond was so damn boring to me for most of the movies. I was only into Bond during the weird gadget superspy type stuff with bombastic action, so I understand if any Bond megafans want to dismiss my views entirely.

It's almost guaranteed that the next Bond will be a PoC, which is fine. I just hope they get back to the gadgets and out of the super dry dialogue stuff.

Because the Broccolis said they won't do a spinoff. It's JUST Bond. Forever and always!

They need to do something though.. Doesn't have to be a woman, but they need to throw something into the mix.. Below the 2 things I would like to see.

1. We have had pretty much the same James Bond since its inception. Sure the approach to the movies and plot has been different depending on the Bond(Moore was campy af), but overall its pretty much the same James Bond. Change it up, make the character either a different race or nationality. Doing so, would freshen up the overall story and allow for some pretty cool plot twists or scenarios.

2. We have enough over the top military style action films as is. They need to go back to the more gadgety and less military style Bond film. Id be happy with movies that resemble the Dalton Bonds or Brosnan. Particularly License to Kill(Arguably my favorite of the Bond films) and Goldeneye.

They DON'T need to do anything. The bond films have been pretty consistent high earners for 50+ years!

If you want "different" go see that 355 film. It has lady spies, a broad mix of ethnicities, probably a broad mix of gender orientations and sexual preferences as well.

Or go see Jolt, or Kate, or Gunpowder Milkshake, or Peppermint, or Without Remorse, or any other of dozens of other films in the same genre.

Leave James Bond alone. He isn't the only game in town for chrissakes.

Barbara Broccoli respects her father's legacy and her family's business. She also respects the legacy of Ian Fleming, the actual author of the Bond novels. She won't let anyone defile the name of James Bond.

James Bond will be a British man, and this is as God intended.

They should focus on producing a decent movie irrespective of the gender of the bond. Gave up after Casino Royale. Or just make a spinoff, doesn't have to be 007.

Who is even asking for this? I had to search through the article to find it:

With the Craig era coming to an end with No Time to Die, Broccoli is poised to recalibrate again. Some fans are calling for a Black Bond or a female 007. Broccoli would be open to the former but not the latter.

"Some fans", so a few rando's on Twitter.

Also Ocean's 11, Thor, in TV it's Batman and Dr. Who and a few others...

And there's nothing wrong with gender swaps because shows like Battlestar Galactica actually benefited from it. It's just that these modern "reimaginings" are more like a platform for feminists to talk about the "the message" instead of trying to tell at least a half-decent story. Plus I also think that some characters shouldn't be messed with. Having a woman play Bond would be like having a white guy play Black Panther.
