So I lit all the blue torches in Hateno Village in BOTW…

nothing happened

probably the most un-Zelda thing I’ve ever experienced in a Zelda game

except for that, the game has been pretty flawless. can’t believe I’ve waited so long to play it. never got around to playing it on my wii u when I still had one and managed to pick up a oled switch on Wednesday. put 20 hours in so far and feel like I haven’t made a dent, which makes me happy

I decided I’m going to avoid looking up anything online and it’s making the game that much more magical

Breath of the Wild is one of those games that I know and accept that it is an absolutely amazing game, but I just don't care for it as much as I would like to.

I go back to it from time to time, and I enjoy playing it every time but I've never finished it. I'm not a huge fan of open world games in general so that combined with the (lack of) music, and weapon durability bullshit keeps me from enjoying it as much as I enjoy stuff like Wind Waker, OOT, and Majoras.

I gave this game a lot of chances and it never got me. I don't think I'll try again. I'm not saying it's a bad game, i just think I'm not in the right mental space to like it, don't think I'll ever have enough free time and clarity of mind to do so

Honestly when I played through the main campaign, I thought it was just ok to a slog. But I was in a different headspace playing the DLC during pandemic and I think that helped play it the way it was meant to be played. Just wandering and fucking around and having fun, not trying to squeeze a story out of it (though there is some added during the DLC).

I think usually I'm so, finish this then get on to the next thing, that it took a pandemic just getting me to take it easy and have fun with it to enjoy it the way it was meant.

I managed to get all the towers but I didn't do any of the main quest or do any shrines. The game is a great open world playground to explore in but the cure combat and shrine systems are not fun at all

Interesting points.

I just think i used to the last of my capacity to pick over an open world inch by inch with The Witcher 3, I've not been able to really dig an open world since, horizon, rdr2, even shadow of the Colossus

This game has some really high highs and some really low lows. Im used to highs in Zelda games but not on such lows. The weapon durability system and the fact that dungeons, bosses and shrines have a single visual theme/look almost ruined it for me. The bosses in particular are the worst. I don't think i can tell them appart.

Happened to me with the first Mass Effect, bought at launch, played for 5 hours and I just wasn't feeling it.

A year later I played through it again and ended up loving it.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Why would anything more happen when they're only there as a means to get the flame to the ancient tech lab and if you can skip any like with using arrows to send the flame over large distances then you can feel free to. Anyway, brilliant game, second only to OoT for sure. Somewhere I had read it doesn't have the trademark lock on combat of the series and was miffed but that was a lie, combat is still similar to how it was. I was scared of the items breaking but in the end it just means you're always excited to find solid gear and you use a lot more different types than otherwise too, while on the rare occasion you run out by your own miscalculations you then get creative with the runes and make do until you grow your arsenal again. It's cool how they even balanced the ancient arrows (no loot from Lynels or anything other than guardians if you just cheese them with one). This is probably the best open world game ever and so much better realized than the likes of Elder Scrolls, Witcher 3 or Ubisoft's open world games and all those that take after them (like Sony's), they all need to take note and stop focusing on the wrong things ending up with lackluster final products. World design wise probably only something like Dragon's Dogma comes anywhere close, but then BOTW's is coupled with amazing vistas and variety like a Xenoblade game's so it's still leagues above that. Hand crafted worlds with level design principles ftw. I hope Elden Ring comes close..!

Should I hold off on buying the DLC until after I beat the game? Not sure what the DLC entails
Get it now. You can unlock things that enhance the main game.
If you can beat the sword trials you're rewarded with a master sword that won't break (youll still need to get the master sword in the main story) also you can unlock a motorcycle for traversal.

Definitely hold off till you complete the game, they're all better suited for endgame players imo, they're rather lacking story wise but offer some of the best and entertaining challenges in the game.

A lot of people didn't enjoy this too much but they have to use careful words because it's from Nintendo. I wanted to like this way more than I did, especially after the awesome trailers. I just don't think I care for most open world games

same here. I do like usually zelda games but I did not like this one. this is too open world for me. I like to have a mission and purpose. not just... go to straight to the final boss if I want from the beginning of the game.

the freedom in the game is nice. but this choppy 30 fps and the switch controller... makes it unplayable for me. it plays better with the pro controller but still..

Buy it now. The new map feature is very useful. It shows where you've been before so you know which parts of the map are undiscovered.
And with the Ancient Saddle you can teleport your Horse to any place on the map. But they don't just give the saddle to you. You still need to find it :lollipop_grinning_smiling_eyes:

Music would only kick in mostly In towns and stuff like that. Hopefully in the sequel they have ambient music that changes depending on which area of the map you are in. Long stretches of silence is very boring for the hearing senses.

It's the most Zelda game they ever made. Its whole purpose is freedom of exploration, which is the entire idea around the first game.
The most zelda ever where you get all the interesting gadget in the first 2 hours of the game and with some of the the worse (if not THE worse) dungeons\boss in the whole brand?

Not a huge zelda expert but this doesn't sound right to me.

So it’s just a bunch of trials?

Playing this game as a

survival game

doing a Master Mode run semented BotW for me as not just an okay game but one of the decade's top 3 best games.

About the lantern it would be cool if there was found a secret there some day..

I think I'll jump back into this game next year, it's not an old game but I already feel an incredible amount of nostalgia for it. Xenoblade Chronicles and XC2 as well. Monolith Soft creates some really memorable worlds and it was a great decision to use their talents to make the world in BotW.

If you don't play it during your run, you likely never will.

If you want to use the motorcycle during your run, instead of for 5 minutes after everything is done - then might as well get it now.

But as others have said, you can 100% skip it as well as nothing in it is that big of a deal.

I don't care much for open world games either but BotW is one of the few i like thanks to its art, gameplay and Zelda charm, but the dungeons, bosses and plot leave a lot to be desired. :^S

BoTW2 if its just more of the same im not even hyped for, but this is Nintendo and they been working a long time on this sequel, so maybe they surprise us

Pretty good game that rose and shine for Nintendo even on Wii U hardware.

I was one of the 1.69 million (wow that's tiny!) that played it on Wii U. Totally fine. Some framerate issues here and there even fully patched up, but it was in areas like the Korok forest, not too annoying for most of the game.

The shame I find is they got this pretty modern engine working on Wii U, to only ever use it for one game. I know it's never going to happen, but since BoTW2 started out as a DLC3 for the first game it would have been a nice gesture to back port it since it looks pretty similar, and the Switch undocked isn't that much stronger either.

isn't that part of a quest or something to light all the torches? i remember doing it for the little person in the lab

anyway if you're in hateno you're basically still at the start of the game lol. you got a long way to go before you even think of finishing.

No, you should do it earlier, especially to unlock the travel medallion. All of the content helps you on your quest, if you get it after the game is over you won't even use it.
In for answers, curious about the DLC as well
It's great content and you will appreciate it more if you don't wait until the game is over to unlock it.

Why? You won't have any reason to play with any of the items you unlock if you've already beat the game.

That's basically where I'm at with it. I played it for a LONG while, and then just put it down. My experience with it was fine, but I wasn't in love or absolutely blown away, and I love the Zelda series.

I honestly don't see myself going back to it to be it or anything.

I agree. I think if I hadn't played a 1000 open-world games before it, like I'm sure many Nintendo-only players haven't, I'd had been blown away. But as it is, I was wishing it was a lot more Zelda and a lot less Assassin's Creed.

The dream of me ever finished BOTW just ended. I had traded my Switch into Gamestop when they were giving like $260 or whatever, and waited to find a OLED. I got my OLED set up the other day and went to download my cloud saves. Nothing. Nintendo deletes your cloud saves if you unsubscribe from Online for 6 months or more so fuck me. I lose a 70 hours FE save, and a 50 hour BOTW save near the end of the game.

Good god, I had no clue! That really sucks.

They do? I can understand having it in their ToS that they CAN do that, but to actually delete such a small amount of data seems ridiculous.

What indicator in the game told you you would get something? Or is it from other games?

in BoTW nothing is mandatory. Usually there are multiple solutions and in this case the only gameplay thing is you light the furnace.

it is repeated one other time.

there is no other indication you get something for lighting all the torches.

although the towns people appreciate them.

Bosses and dungeons are just stuff they added to create variety, the true essence of Zelda from the beginning was always about exploration. The first game was all about going where you want and figuring things out, which is the very core of BOTW. The developers ever talked about this in detail how they went back to the true nature of Zelda.

It's a fun game to mess around with for a decent while; I just really wish the combat was more fun, or the rewards for exploring were better.
