What is going on with PS5 in Japan? Xbox Series came only a few hundreds units away from beating PS5 in weekly number

What an incredible inferiority complex all over game console ownership. There is more to life than tying your identity to a video game system and sales threads.
Sales are a very important to the games a console receives in its lifespan.

In fact, part of Playstation's decline in Japan is due to the unappealing (to the Japanese market) westernised software Sony is making.

There’s basically no market where Xbox is leading right now and you want to gloat about a measly week in a market where PS5 basically has no supply?

Those 2 words, can come back to haunt if they got aggressive.

Let's not pretend one is highly sought after while the other languishes. If they decided to pour more money in now, a few may come up with no chips soon.

It has nothing to do with one being more popular, for the chip makers, the are selling more than they can make.

Sony pre-ordered a lot, but there's no promise once that order was filled that they would continue those numbers.

do we know what wifi card the ps5 uses?

in my business its not just gpu that is the issue, there's been supply chain issues on quite a few of the components.

There's no way Sony recovers in Japan from this. It's going to be the worst performing playstation ever there. Sadge.

Supply is not low because demand is low. That's a moronic take. Demand is high for EVERYTHING right now.

There's certainly not high demand in Japan for PS5 software, and that's quite telling. You would think Sony would allocate Japan 50k units to sell in its native territory just to make a statement at this point, if the demand was actually there.

That's pretty funny.

And if Xbox outsells PS5 next week it'd be funny too. The PS5 supply issues are Sony's problem, not an excuse to start fanboying out with ridiculous anecdotal evidence.

So why Xbox console sell so close to ps5 in Japan if it's just low demand? More software?

I doubt that we can draw any conclusion about sales numbers for PS5 and XSX anywhere. Maybe there is some odd country somewhere where these consoles are sitting on the shelves but in Japan, US, big european countries we’re just looking at manufacture numbers. They’re selling everything they can make. And Sony has so far manufactured more, so they’re leading. Nothing nore to say really. 🤷‍♂️

On that note, electronics manufacturing is what put food on my table. And things are getting worse. There is an industry wide component supply problem right now that is incredibly difficult to handle. At my place we’re changing some products and completely pausing others to secure components for those we know sell the most since some components simply can’t be bought. Previously we had people searching components at the cheapest prices, now we have people searching for components at any prices working with people reconstructing the circuits boards so we can use alternative components. The industry is broken.

MS also has their manufacturing split (possibly around 50/50) between two separate SKUs, and the S is not selling out in Europe. People don't really want it, they want the "real" next-gen machines. Sure, Sony also has two SKUs, but from what I understand they are producing FAR fewer of the digital version.

360 did outsell the PS3 on occasions.

I think this is as close as it has ever got between Playstation and Xbox. I don't remember it's ever this close, not even in PS3 era

Also I think this is the lowest Playstation weekly number ever. Even PS3 typically hovered around 7-10K, it's never this low

So is this really supply issue?........ or more like a demand issue? Has Japan totally given up on Playstation brand?

"Only a few hundred units"?..... Wut!?!?!?

Stay off the liquor, OP. You're drunk.

A few hundred? More like a thousand/week.
And then it’s just another 10.000 for several years until it has caught up in lifetime sales.

The guy that raised game prices across the board for first party and is charging for upgrades to games you already own?

The guy who said he believed in generations?

The guy who shut down Japan Studio and got rid of legendary people like the producer of Bloodborne?

The guy who decided to close the PS3 and PSP/vita store and gave developers just a few weeks notice and had to reverse the whole thing?

The guy who talks about hundreds of millions playing PS Studios games..... puts the games on PC and they barely sell over 1 million and he talks about it like it is some huge achievement?

The guy who is allowing the competition to control the narrative in the media for 99% of the time?

Also PSNow is something I really want to die... subscription gaming and cloud gaming is crap IMO.

Jim 'things are tight' Ryan..... can't wait for his next GQ interview, since every gamer has a subscription there. He relates to us so well.... you know, he just 'gets it'!

I don't give passes on complete incompetence..... I'll let you all know when I see something good from him.

The latest thing was hilarious..... He releases a big statement about Activision and how terrible they are and then a day or two later an ex Sony employee is suing them for wrongful termination and says Sony has many of the same issues. He is the one who created the situation that led to her being jobless BTW.

Leadership needs to go back to Japan, moving it to California is the worst thing that ever happened and every american and european should be removed from the upper management. Cause they don't have a clue....useless, bloody USELESS.
I don't even know what to say. Holy shit.

Yeah. Because I'm sure Microsoft are sending all manufactured consoles into Japan :D
Supply issues are present for PS and also for Xbox.
Does it really matter if they did tho? I mean i can walk into a store right now and grab a Series S, don’t think its any different in Japan where the majority are into mobile/portable gaming.
Acting like Xbox and PS has the same level of demand 🤦🏻‍♂️. There’s level’s to this shit.

Who said that demand for Xbox and PS is the same?

Maybe for Series X and PS5...

But it's clear that you can buy Series S in stores HERE. But that does not mean, that you can buy Series S in stores in JAPAN...right?

I was just trying to say that even Microsoft is prioritising other markets, so you can't just say that Sony is selling bad in japan, because they are sending almost all their units to the west, because Microsoft is doing same thing.

I wonder how unappealing Nintendo was to Japanese Market around the Wii U..….

The 360 outsold the PS3 several weeks in 2008/2009. Beating the PS5 in 1 week just because it doesn't have stock when the PS5 has outsold the XS almost 10:1 in Japan is nothing to gloat about. You should focus on Xbox returning to even 360 levels in Japan because launch aligned it's still behind x360 and even the original xbox. PS5 has already sold in Japan more than what Xbox Series is likely to sell lifetime.

I know that it is a supply issue but.... that is a joke.

Japan should get at least 20k weekly. Jim is doing a great job between shuttering Japan studio, needlessly changing select button, lack of investment in Japanese studios and this lack of stock along with other issues...of really making Japan seem like an afterthought.

At this stage, I just cannot wait for Jim Ryan to be gone and for leadership to move back to Japan. This needs to happen. Soon.
Welcome back

OP is not stating that Xbox is taking over Japan, all I got from the statement is that why is the Xbox doing well in Japan this week? Consumers don't have to buy something based on availability. Why are they actually being compelled to buy anything branded xbox?

Ehh I would argue the correct statement should be “ps5 is coming close to selling as poorly as an Xbox in Japan”

It's literally their thesis statement: "So is this really supply issue?........ or more like a demand issue? Has Japan totally given up on Playstation brand?"

. . .and it's a ridiculous statement. If anything, Japan isn't really interested in tethered gaming; focusing this on SONY is wildly disingenuous.

Sony are prioritizing PS5 shipments to North America and Europe, there's more demand there and more importantly they know they will be able to sell more software in those territories. The PS5s that are sold in Japan are pretty much the number of PS5s that were available to purchase there; Japanese shops are all sold out of the system, it's not like they're rotting on store shelves.

If you follow the news, PS5 supply is actually very constraint right now, in Malaysia its impossible to find one at a normal price.

But i dont think you wanna know, i doubt you are a playstation fan, i mean we can see your post history.....
The concern trolling over the most in demand console ever is hilarious. Never mind Japan you can't get one anywhere easily, and I'm talking countries that actually get a lot of supply.

It's a supply issue, very likely means they didn't ship new units to Japanese retailers this or the previous week, because Sony may prefer to focus their very limited stock in their best selling markets (Europe and NA). PS5 is selling at record levels worldwide, but new shipments get sold out in a few minutes and they can't produce more units to a global chips shortage issue.

PS5 Lifetime Sales - 1.17 million

XBS Lifetime Sales - 0.12 million

PS5 is outselling XBS by a 10 to 1 ratio.

Has Japan totally given up on the Xbox brand?

Supply. If you look at total sales, PS5 is outselling Xbox 10 to 1. PS5 usually sells ~10-15k while Xbox (SX and SS combined) only sells 3-4k
