not really true but i'm sure you'll provide the source/evidence.
Outside of my common sense the only source I have is vaguely remembering a Remedy developer tweeting something about being ”a bit envious” about not having to target a broad range of specs to a Housemarque developer after they got aquired by Sony.

I can’t provide any sources outside of that but please enlighten me. If it’s just as easy targeting a wider range of specs vs a single spec it sure doesn’t sound very intuitive to me personally.

No. If anything, it would have been cool to see Sony release a PS5 Pro alongside it. Probably not possible due to how big the APU would have been, but a 18TF PS5 Pro for $699 or something would have been interesting. I'd pay for it.

Edit: And 24GB or so of RAM.

i know we got the PS5 Digital but the only difference is there isn't a disc drive. i'm thinking of something like what the Series S is to the Series X. in addition to no disc drive: smaller ssd, less processing power acrossing CPU/GPU, lower resolution/fps.

we're well over a year into this generation and getting hold of a PS5 is still difficult. same goes for the Series X but the Series S is easy to get hold of. I know there will people coming in with "but xbox has no games hur duur" but if you put that aside the fact is that Microsoft has a next gen console that is easily available to access Gamepass and games like Forza Horizon 5, Flight Simulator, and Halo Infinite.

i'm holding off for a Series X but as time goes on i'm more and more tempted to just grab the Series S. if I were a PS fan and were struggling to get a PS5 then right now I'd love if there was a £250 playstation console.
Series S is easy to pick up because it isn't as popular. If anything they should have done a $399 series X and never brought out the series S.

Sure, Sony should have released a retard version of the machine, just like the Series S. But you know what? You are stopping way too early, why not have one with only 4 CUs and 1 GB in RAM? It'd so soooo easy and cheap to produce and it'd be a next gen machine, just like the Series S, just for 720p.

Come on, being serious, the Series S is a stupid idea, always has been. It cut down on the number of Series X machines that can be produced and can only push out visuals at 1080p, while adding headaches to developers. It's a One X just with quality of life improvements and worse GPU in terms of performance, that's not next gen. The jump is very modest as it is and you want to jump back to something that is barely better than a PS4 Pro.

We already have that, it's called ps4, until jimbo keeps going with this crappy crossgen shit you literally have a less powerful ps5 on your hands for all the major titles.

500 is already super fucking cheap for something that you are gonna use thousands of hours for 7-8 years.

They should make a PS5 Starter edition. Basically like a Series S, a PS5 that's 100% digital and targets 1080p/1440p and sell it for $249 while discontinuing the PS4 Pro since the PS5 Starter would basically be a Pro but with the superior Zen CPU and new GPU.

As a disc based PS5 owner, I think Sony should have made just a Digital only PS5 and then sell an external disc drive attachment. The console is ugly as hell and weird looking as it is, the drive could have been shaped similarly. Then they could just have one 399$ SKU and the upswell for a drive for those of us who want to have our plastic discs.

The PS5 DE IS the cheaper PS5.

Should they have released a version with gimped hardware? Feck no!!!

Time will reveal why, when games start being targeted specifically to next-gen consoles and legacy platform targets get dropped.

Even now, gamers are making threads on GAF bitching about how the PS5/XSX aren't as impressive an upgrade from last gen. And you think the solution to that is to release gimped hardware that will only make that situation worse?

Had Sony released a "PS5 S", then gamers would move to gaming exclusively on PC. Because the sole benefit of a fixed target hardware spec is now thrown out the window.

Fascinating idea! The lower spec on the XSS makes it easier to produce. It would be nice to have more inventory for more people to game. The XSS is constantly being restocked and people mistakenly think that it is all launch units sitting on shelves.

This may be a situation where MS because of their broader focus on PC, mobile, cloud, and console needed a different SKU to have more vectors into their ecosystem. Sony simply doesn't have that reach. Their only vector is console and the only digital source for games is the PlayStation store.

MS also did more than just produce a cheaper console they also redid their development kit so all creators to make multiple versions of titles in one dev cycle. I don't think Sony would want to take that time to create the infrastructure to support that vision. The idea is interesting but I think it's best each company do what works for them. MS can do certain things Sony cannot and would not. If the MS direction really takes off others will follow just like achievements and standard wireless controllers.

The next Sucker Punch, Naughty dog etc game will likely look insane. They will be designed with the ps5 in mind. All games on series x are designed with both the s and x and a full range of shitty spec pc’s in mind.

We'll probably the best looking game ever made is Flight Simulator, I'll be fine with that sort of quality.
We've just had Forza Horizon 5 which looks pretty incredible, it also runs on Xbox One S.
There will be PC games well beyond what any console can achieve, there probably is already.

Did you missed sony releasing their games on pc aswell, they literally bought a studio specialized in pc ports recently...

If M need to worry about 19227284273 different specs, it is the same for sony since both release their games on pc.

We are not in the timeline where first party console games are made with a single hardware in mind anymore my dude.

No. The PS5 digital is a price sweet spot imo. All you give up at 400USD is the disk drive, and other than that it arguably looks better physically. There's no doing more development work for a significantly weaker console so it sets the baseline.

They gave us a cheaper version without a disk drive.. what else do you want?

series s type machine doesn't fit Sony's marketing or image at all.

The first party Sony games that have been released on PC are marginal and have always been developed for a Playstation system first and foremost. This may get more traction in the future with the newly aquired studio but even then their first party studios will develop just for Playstation platforms and another studio will do the port afterwards.

You make it sound like every Sony game comes to PC which is far from the truth and we are definetly in a timeline where all first party Sony developers develope for a Playstation platform first.

How could anyone that doesn't work for PR say that? lol 500 is not cheap for something you play games on.
Don't make me laugh...

People spend more than 1000 dollars (much more) for tvs and smartphones or notebooks and none of these things endure for 7-8 years, they are lucky if people keep these things for more than 3-4 years at best, i'm not wealthy and i still change my oled tv\pc\smartphone every 2-3 years.

If you consider gaming such a shitty type of entartainmnet compared to watching a movie or calling someone what are you doing in an enthusiast gaming forum?

Gamers are just cheap fucks nowadays, deal with it.

I think Xbox wanted the Series S to be a “game pass box”. It fills the market for cheap, easier to give as a gift, and doesn’t require buying individual games. It’s better for them than continuing to produce, distribute, and support the older Xbox One.

PlayStation gamers can just buy a PS4/Pro.

The point is, if your game need to be released on pc sooner or later, you still have to watch for the multitude of different pc configs, releasing at day one or after 1 year doesn't change that.

So, if it is not a problem for sony, it's probably not a problem for M Aswell.

And dude, don't be naive, it's clear that sony is watching the pc market with a lot of interest, 2 years ago people was sure that sony first party games would never be released on pc and look at the situation now.

They are gonna release everything sooner or later, and i have both a ps5 and pc so i give 2 fucks about port begging.

The value you get for a PS5 digital is ridicolous at the moment - unless you see great value in Gamepass or MS exclusives there is basically zero reason to get a Series S for cost reasons given the price for PS5D. I believe the PS5D blindsided MS in terms of price/performance ratio.

If more or a majority of Playstation games are coming to PC in the future than this sure will play a role in the early stages of development for these games but i'm convinced it doesn't as of now.

I acknowledge Sony's interest in the PC market but again the games that have been released on PC for now are a fraction of the ones available. Let's be realistic.

I'm not against multi platform releases either in any way but i still believe it is a misconception to think every first party Sony game will come to PC.

Having 2 consoles is really just a 2 sided coin.

for a customer like me, I have the Xbox series s for my 6 years old son and it’s perfect as we share and I play my Xbox series x .
The down side is that can affect the customer and more importantly the developer, is the extra development and optimization etc.

With that being said . The difference in power between a ps5 digital edition and Xbox series s for 100$..... made me kinda wish I have bought a ps5.

I’ll probably get him digital ps5 and sell his series s next year when they are widely available

I hate different versions of consoles so no and that includes pro, be it weaker or better. I want one version only so the devs can work only on one version of the game

This cross gen is horrible, no need to add some more
