Series X or PS5?

Hi guys. I am looking to jump in to next gen (having not bothered with ps4 / xbox one). But I am on the fence as to which to get.

I currently have a 360 with a load of disc games (and some original xbox). I was thinking maybe getting gamepass ultimate for streaming. My last Sony console was ps2 (got discs but not played at all aside from psx gpolice in last 10 years on it).

I only have a 10yr old 1080p tv (wont replace until it breaks) but I refuse to go without a drive. I don't sell old consoles so backwards compatibility is nice but not essential.

On PS5 side I did enjoy a few ps4 games at friends and the new controller looks interesting (if a little gimped by the analogue placement). My impression is the library on ps4 was superior last gen so I am tempted not to miss out. I hate loading.

Generally I like arcade games or single player with 6 to 30 hour campaigns.

Which would offer the best entertainment for someone who has some catching up to do? Iam not invested in console wars so all advice welcome 😀

To me, PS5 has the better games and controller. Xbox has the cheaper way to play many games.

Both are indispensable.

Of course, if you're not caught up, many of the best games from last generation are included on the PS+ Collection,if you are on PS5

I have both consoles but I've been getting a ton of fun from the Series X. Quick Resume is something that I didn't realize would be such a huge deal. Switching from games take literally seconds. BC is nice on Xbox more so than PS5 IMO.

You can't go wrong with either, more on which one can you find in stores.

Best of luck! You're going to enjoy the new generation.

Either are good, but since you are more inclined towards single player games then I would suggest PS5 and subscribe to PS+ to take advantage of the PS5 PS+ Collection. That will give you a heck of a lot of games to play.

Edit: You could also take advantage of Game Pass Ultimate trial and play some games on xCloud to see if there are games there you might enjoy.

Good luck.

Xbox. Gamepass, quick resume, tons of BC and Forza Horizon 5 for that arcade itch.

And Halo is looking pretty great. You’ll save a ton on not spending $70 per game, especially if you choose Gamepass, and get a wide variety of experiences available from the start.

I have both.

If I were buying TODAY and had to lock myself into one forever ..

I'd say Series X.

They're in the best position they've ever been in for exclusives... and they have made me regret every digital PS3 title I've ever bought with their very cool backward compatibility.

You're going to miss out on some BIG games either way this generation.. so be careful. But I'd do Xbox and Game Pass.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

Since you only have a 1080p TV, I'd say your most economical option would be to get a Series S. This is especially the case if you used to have an Xbox 360 and might have some purchases you made, because they might be playable on the Series S since it's backwards compatible.

If you're looking for something more future proof, I'd personally recommend a Series X. The library on Game Pass sounds like it'd be right in line with your interests (lots of "arcade" style games and shorter single player stuff) and it'd be a really inexpensive way to get a bunch of stuff now as well as a decently rotating library of things going forward. And since you like arcade games and older stuff, it's pretty easy to get Retroarch running on the Series X without much fuss, which even supports playing older (NES, Genesis, N64, etc.) games with Retro Achievements.

As others have said though, the PS5 with the PS+ collection is a hell of a deal and will certainly keep you busy for a long time.

Either way you decide to go, have fun!

Seems like the PS5 might be the best fit for you.

The PS5 has been a more "next-gen" console to me than Xbox Series X and I have both. However, the Xbox has a bigger volume of games to play now at a lower cost with Xbox game pass. But based on what you said I think the PS5 would be a better fit because you seem to prefer to purchase physical games anyway.

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
Exclusives are still a question mark for both, the use of VR, in particular is a promise from SONY. Microsoft’s message is pushing game pass.

If you missed out on stuff like God of War, Horizon, and Ghost of Tshuima and enjoy single player games theres no question it should be PS5 to play those and the upcoming sequels for the first two.

If you want a library of just a lot of different things to play and have a lot of time an Xbox with GP makes more sense.

Exclusives should really be the deciding factor between the two systems as the performance of each has long been established. Based on your stated gaming joys, it is hard to suggest the XSX over the PS5 given SONY's HEAVY focus on single player output for their first party offerings.

. . .having said that, GAMEPASS I'm sure has a ton of games that play very well on XSX from third party developers. So, pay for high quality exclusives (PS5) or get some high quality (and a lot not so much) single player content for free (XSX).

depends. if you have pc or not.

without PC, Xbox series X no questions asked.
Do you have a PC? probably PS5 is the best option.

with that being said I have the Xbox series x limited edition Halo. honestly, my PS5 has been collecting dust ever since I got the system. just busy between game pass and Forza and halo.

with that being said. I do love my PS5 and I'll not sell it. especially since I was blessed with the original model with a bigger heat sink AND a quiet fan model.

PS5 has exclusives coming next year that are awesome. but for this year? Xbox hands down.

by default. you should get both systems when you can. I would say Xbox this year and PS5 next year.

I chose Xbox because of gamepass. But if Sony's first party software is more your cup of tea, go with the ps5. No wrong choice here.

If playing your old 360 disc games really matters get the X, but if not then get the PS5, they have more of those single player games you like, plus if you get a PS5 and PS Plus you get the PS+ collection which has a bunch of awesome PS4 games you never played.

Tbh it really depends on where the bulk of your library is since Ps4 and Xbox one BC is flawless. They’re both great consoles but I’ve mostly been playing PS4 exclusives at better frame rates and multi platform on my SX.

PS5 has the better controller and better first party

Gamepass is cheap and worth it for some third and most first party games.

I would advise you to plan your strategy for owning both; if you have free time that is.

Xbox first and wait on price drops for $70 games then ps5 2nd? Maybe. I think ps5s going to have a much stronger 2nd year with FF XVI. I dont think God of War 2 is going to blow everyone's minds. Horizon 2 will be very pretty.

If you like indies and AA games and like hoarding tons of games then Gamepass is nuts. Next Christmas has Starfield.

I went ps5 and series S to get both. Couldn't stomach $500 twice.

It's really personal opinion.

IMO Sony has the better exclusives but you'll be paying a premium for them. They also have better support from Japanese devs which I like
Series X has Gamepass which offers a ton of value and you also get better backwards compatibility. But to me the exclusives aren't as appealing (at least yet) and many of their exciting projects seem to be years away.

I've been tempted to get a Series X just because it's cheaper here (for some reason...thx Sony!) and Gamepass is great. But damn..GOW, Horizon, Demon Souls, FFXVI and probably 7remake part 2....it's hard to give up those things.

I have to say Series X for now. Things will change later for sure when the big Sony guns release, but right now Series X is on fire with GamePass releases, you get much more right out the box, especially with BC and even RetroArch, it's gaming goodness from all generations and free remasters. I started playing Sonic Generations and it feels like a Series X game, I don't know what they did, it can't just be a 4K/60fps update, the game looks soo good now 🤤

Can't fully recommend either but Xbox does have GP and some pretty cool synergistic "Play Anywhere" tech and a good BC system, PS5 has a couple cool exclusives.

Simple, choose based on which one has the most games you want to play.
Yep, if OP isn't going by the "my friends have X console" and enjoys arcade/campaign it's an open book really. Given OPs TV setup the thread recommending a PS5 and Series S seems quite appropriate. Gamepass, BC and arcade style games are good to go on Series S. The tent pole campaign games for PS5.

One of my main reasons for going Xbox is the controller. I cannot stand the symmetrical thumbsticks of PS.
