Phil Spencer Comments on NFT Games

IbizaPocholo

NeoGAFs Kent Brockman

Stephen Totilo from Axios recently unveiled Spencer's comments about how Xbox intends to handle NFT games now that they're emerging in the industry. Spencer didn't deny that Xbox was looking into NFT games, but said that implementing them into the Microsoft store may feel exploitative. Spencer also confirmed that anything Xbox sees as exploitative for fans isn't welcome on its storefronts or platforms.

Although Phil Spencer didn't firmly decline to Xbox delving into NFTs, apparently it's something that Xbox has looked at and doesn't see a reason to get into it too early. Spencer suggested that Xbox is more interested in entertaining its player base than getting into the NFT boom too soon. “I don't think it necessitates that every NFT game is exploitive," stated Phil Spencer. "And I can understand that early on you see a lot of things that probably are not things you want to have in your store.”

According to Phil Spencer, the gaming industry is still in its journey to discovering the true potential of NFTs, and developers are still figuring out how to properly implement them into games.

Hey we notice that the new fad/trend is X. We too are interested and are possibly thinking about X. Please find that we are in touch with the lingo and want your money too.

It's exploitive and another way for publishers/developers to make money off of people. That's the only accurate way to describe what absolute shit it is. Just make a decent game and stop trying to fleece people for more money. 20 years ago I did not imagine this would be the potential "future" for gaming.

Authenticating digital assets has long been elusive. This is a big deal.

Everything will be on here eventually. The title to your house, your car license, a contract between parties, etc.

Who wants to buy the image in my avatar? I'll sell it to you for $100. I won't stop using it, and everyone else can still just right click and save it, and no one will pay you any licensing fees for using it or anything, but you get to say you "own" it.

That's NFTs. They're scams.
The image has zero utility so you can't appraise it like that. That same image being issued by say Mark Cerny would be worth quite a bit though. Don't see the scam.

It's kinda a 'scam' until you can legally make someone pay for using the image/object via the courts system. I am talking specifically about the image/object and not the token.

Using it as a profile picture is a utility
It can be. In most cases it isn't though.

You can totally build a forum where only certified NFT owners can use their NFTs as profile pictures. That's where these images would have utility I guess.

In most forums though, everything goes. In these cases, all profile pictures have zero utility.

What's NFT?

Putting it simple for normies. It's one time art that is signed to be 1/1 or other type of digital asset that's all part of blockchain and crypto like Bitcoin n shit.

If you never gotten into crypto then it's nothing to worry about if you ask me.

It can easily be argued as a utility under any case. I.e this person used it to market their social media accounts

The image has no utility though. Idk what "using" it even means.
I will replace image with object.
Use the image/object in same way as any other copyrighted material aka replication for commercial or non-commercial usage.

I quite like the analogy of copyright to NFTs, know there are probably some flaws to the analogy and need to figure out where it fails but for now; copyright laws only works cause you have a court system to enforce those laws. NFTs works well for one platform (cause you have an alternative court system aka the platform holder) but not really across platforms (yet and maybe never).

There are definitely people out there making some promises that shouldn't be made. I don't think NFTs are 100% a bad thing, ending up watching the Gamesbeat panel on it and was a bit more interested in the creative usages of it. Need to check out one of the games that they mention and is on Steam.

As always, the government will be at least 10 years behind the newest tech developments, but eventually it will happen I think.

In the mean time, platforms can do the enforcing themselves. It would be in their own self-interest if NFTs really start becoming popular.

What was Valves policy on games with crypto-currency features?

I thought it was banned but must be more nuanced.

I think it will happen as well, it's just another way to increase the ARPU on the top 1/5%. I just generally don't buy the pro's and possibilities that some of these crypto-bros push as a way to get buy in from normal users.

NFT does not have to have any monetary value

NFT as in Non-fungible Token ensures that file on the network is going to be unique and immutable on the whole chain.

Blockchain and NFT could be big technology for games, especially if not payed.

Imagine something like MMO Borderlands where everyone in the game world has it's own gun.

They are 100% scammy and bad for our brand, so we will hide them from our storefront and let the publishers scam our users in the background because we are scared of them.

EA, sega, square enix, and ubisoft are all exploring nft games. Is MS just gonna disallow them?

Sony has already partnered with Tron on developing an nft system or marketplace

NFTs are such a scam. But I have made some decent money with them. A fool and his money is soon parted.

The only answer is if it makes money, yes. If it don’t make money, no.
Scams are allowed in our society, our entire economy is a giant scam.

NFT is SCAM. You dont get your stuff back in anyway. You are wasting your money.

Any company that Approves it is garbage. XBOX/NINTENDO/PLAYSTATION. No exception.

Keep that filth away from gaming.

Wait for it. EA and Activision are racing to see who will be the first with a NFT game.

Great response.

Given the way Sony is going, I do wonder what they think of this. I'd like a journalist to ask them for a comment. Sony has been keeping company with Take Two and Activision in raising prices early and monetizing cross-gen upgrades, so they may feel very differently about NFTs.

Nintendo will probably hear about NFTs for the first time in about 10 years.

Ironically enough, Nintendo is way ahead of the pack when it comes to a plausible NFT implementation. Their Amiibos are basically that thing with interchangeable ingame content that so many NFT-in-games proponents want. Except the whole reason they exist is that they're not volatile, they sell for a mostly fixed price that funds the creation of assets for their ingame use, and their value is not in their ingame features, but far and beyond in their quality depiction of well-known licensed characters that you can't get anywhere else because anyone else who would dare sell them would be hunted down by lawyers.

Nobody really knows how this will work yet. They're still in the "assemble the big brains and let them think" phase. I expect Sony and MS to wait a couple more years before deciding anything. This new Wild West is gonna play out on PC first.

I'd like to see what Epic has to say also. I could see this stuff in Fortnite.
