Dolby Vision Gaming Now Available on Xbox Series XIS

At least they’ve said it’s coming.
Dolby Vision 120 has been confirmed working on the beta firmware for LG CX series for quite a while now (a few YT vids are out on it). Unfortunately you have to have a service remote to access Engineering Mode and download the firmware.
Just a matter of waiting at this point for the public release... Here's hoping this move from MS will light a fire under LG to get it done.

I wish I was immune to ~100ms input lag :messenger_smirking:
I guess I’m just used to it. Couldn’t do any fast A-B switching since the game had to be restarted between the switching but going by just the sense of hitting the button and seeing something happen it was some latency with both DV and regular HDR. No idea about any figures but I could play just fine. I’m thinking my AVR add latency too and what I feel is essentially lag vs lag+ so I’m already used to it. 🤷‍♂️

I could never really tell the difference between HDR10 and Dolby Vision when I’m watching movies. What’s the difference here? It’s pretty cool to have as an option though, I suppose.

..Do you not understand how the xsx hz setting works? It's system wide, so even if a game is 30fps, the TV will still receive a 120hz signal.
Being at the native hz for the tv produces the absolute lowest input lag possible, even allowing the use of non-game modes without much problems.
At other hz settings, like 60, the input lag rises sharply outside of game modes.
Many tvs don't have a game mode for dolby vision, so no it's not a "great feature to enjoy 60fps gaming" when your experience is literally worsened by much higher input lag.

90ms... no thanks.
But is the small gain in latency between the console and TV - but not for the gamer's inputs if the 30fps, 60fps is v-synched or triple buffered - worth the loss in picture quality - because the TV is then being given half or a quarter less time to DSP the video and audio per frame?

Matching the frame-rate to the refresh rate that the game was designed for, will almost, always be the better option on very good televisions with impressive DSP IMHO.

If you think it's a "small gain" this isn't worth discussing. Maybe try some kind of input lag simulator.
If you still think it's a small gain after that, you probably just aren't very sensitive to the added lag.

I haven't tried this Dolby Vision -support yet, but my most concrete experience with input lag was when I was playing Mass Effect and failed the "hacking" QTE-tasks every time.

Then I noticed that I had forgot to turn on the Game Mode on TV. Turning it on fixed the problem. Luckily ALLM etc fixes that problem these days and even the normal mode would be much faster now.

DV = placebo. The only people who claim to tell the difference are the same ones that pretend they can tell 1800p apart from 2160p from two rooms away. Even for video it's barely anything to note, and at least there it makes sense you'd tell a difference but for interactive, dynamic content like gaming? Naah. For real differences in HDR you're gonna have to commit some real hardware resources to it & work on the software ala FidelityFX LPM. It's the tone-mapper that will do any kind of heavy lifting but that will require per-game tweaking from the devs themselves, so don't expect it to be common.

to use double vision in the CX you have do disable freesync I think

VRR still works, but I have to drop down to 60hz and although some of the bright areas look better it's not worth the framerate drop from what I've just played on Cold War.

HDMI VRR works with DV, but using AMD Freesync instead disables DV on XSX.
yes but I dont see what the difference is? ive tried both and got the exact same results in any game I tried...seems like its not necessary at all to engage Freesync over VRR.

also the 03.30.05 LG CX firmware should be rolling out today or tomorrow (its supposed to be out by the end of September)

it will enable DV at 120hz and also fix the Hz display at 120hz from the 5.5 BS to proper 120.00

Freesync also has LFC as oppose to VRR, so probably that's why. And from my personal experience FS is a bit smoother than VRR, most noticeably at 60FPS.

VRR also has LFC. The in-game behavior is the same with both formats. At least on XSX

I can appreciate the difference in lag, for example when anything above about 40ms, makes a level like Champions Road - on Super Mario 3D world - unplayable because of the movement/anticipation involved, and I do have my spare Sony KDL-32W7 in case I ever need the half frame latency for 60fps fighting games(7ms iirc). But in most game scenarios, a TV below 35ms of latency is good enough, and below that is better, but on a scale of diminishing returns for the vast majority of games, because gamers naturally interpolates on screen motion to anticipate most gameplay, rather than instantaneously react.

Better picture quality at low -enough - latency will likely provide more info to anticipate better, than any loss of reaction situation IMO, but each to their own. And as I said in the previous post, you probably aren't getting that improvement in gameplay, anyway, because the game logic is trapped at the v-synched frame-rate, making you wait with the same frame - duplicated 4 times - before showing you the result of your input. Yes, you've probably reacted earlier, but 9 out of 10 situations more latency with better IQ will be just as playable and look superior.

So does the new LG CX firmware with Dolby vision include a game mode version? Or does enabling it on Series X always add the 90ms latency?

Now that it’s been out for a while, what’s everyone’s opinion?

Native DV games look great. But ultimately it doesn’t look good for non-DV games. For me things look dimmer and slightly washed out. I’ll likely ended up sticking with HDR10 for now. Games that support HGIG look better imo.

I will be shocked to hear it adds latency becuase I tried it on Forza Horizon 5 and couldnt feel an increase in latency. If it does...I'm a noob.

decided not to even use it, can’t tell the difference personally and my C9 won’t do 120hz DV so just stuck with HDR10.

Since many TVs with HDMI 2.1 ports only allow you to do DV OR 120hz on the ports (not both), I'd honestly choose 120hz over Dolby Vision for gaming. I have one port set to DV for movies, and the other to 120 for the Series X on my X90J.
Lg oled does both

There was a recent update for Dirt 5 (haven't played in while), and now that it plays in Dolby Vision, the image is all washed out on my C1 OLED. Never had this issues when it was playing in HDR10. Strange.

Was the DIRT 5 update specifically to add native Dolby Vision support? or was it coincidental?

No idea. All I know is the image looks far too blown out. I ended up turning off Dolby Vision for Dirt 5 and everything seems normal. Guess I need to adjust things for Dolby Vision in that game. Back 4 Blood seems to look great in Dolby though so it must be Dirt 5 for whatever reason.

Man, don't know if it's my phone but I don't see any difference. Certainly doesn't look like it's worth the cost of buying a Dolby Vision TV specifically for this feature.
You phone can decode Dolby Vision ? And what's your source?

I read somewhere (or is it Digital Foundry?) that Forza Horizon 5 would only support HDR and not Dolby Vison. Was very happy to see that it does support it Today.

I never rated HDR before my TV kicked into Dolby Vision with Forza Horizon 5.

Absolutely stunning.

Why does PS5 not support? Is it a licensing issue? It's the same hardware inside isn't it?

No, I mean watching the comparison YouTube video.
It cannot be conclusive since the video and your phone are not able to decode Dolby Vision. It's like comparing color vs black&white using a black&white tv.

Great, now you're up to speed and understand my comment in my OP. 👍

Does anyone know why there’s no DV 4k blu ray support? Licensing? Is it a hardware limitation? A software issue? Any discussion on the Xbox insider board?
