12600k faster than the 5800X is all you need to know, at roughly the same price + ddr 5 support which makes it more interesting for those in need of upgrading ... like myself ! been rocking a 4790k since years, time to finally drop it.

I don't see RT tests? From those graphs it looks to be barely faster over Z3... but same power consumption while gaming. Waiting for GN.

So the 12900k is indeed faster than the 5950x in gaming while having pretty similar power consumption. The thing gets hot and power-hungry in productivity, though.

AMD is going to have to cut prices a lot on Ryzen 5/7 5000s to be competitive. Even at $300 8C/16T Zen3 would be a hard sell vs 12600K/KF. The eventual 6C/12T 12500/12400s should be around $200-220 or so, so Zen3 6C/12T needs to be positioned below that.
 
Looks like entry 4,8 GHz DDR5 runs happily at 7 GHz with no issues on a good board. Where are those GN benches? Common

Those thermals are atrocious. Also they ran at 241w compared to zen having power limits on. Yea not a giant win when your cpu hits 100 degrees.

Yep. If the CPU doesn't throttle (I assume it doesn't, Linus isn't stupid), those are some really good numbers. I expect AMD to drop those prices.

Interestingly the power draw is nearly identical during gaming load, if we're to believe LTT leak, but yeah if you're using your pc mostly as a workstation then Z3 might be the better choice. Just wait a few hours and you know what to pick.

the entire point of buying a cpu with more than 8 cores is not just for gaming. Gaming is such a small segment for these cpu's you know that right? Imagine buying a bunch of dell workstations, or dell business desktops with these CPU's for your company. And see your PR department who are making videos uploading them to your site, and making company media using these?

Close to 100 degrees at 241w. Good luck running a render for a web video or instructional video for your company and leaving it render while you go make a coffee. I guess the plus side if you live where it gets cold you can heat your office.

Intel CPU's have been running too hot for the last 4 gens or more. You absolutely need a good aftermarket cooler for them.

I'm talking Businiess desktops like from Dell, HP, ACER, LENOVO? Those will all come from the factory with those shitty Nickle 90mm fans that at low usage for desktop apps are fine. But if you buy a 12700k and are running on a Dell XPS Workstation which is what we have here at the station (8700 non k) I hate to see how loud those will be.

Ours get crazy loud, and thats just using adobe doing local commercials. ANd these are fairly well built xps towers. They literally had to redesign because of heat when intel went larger than 4 cores.
Now imagine a Optiplex series which is not really designed for media, but for business apps, but the odds of someone doing some video stuff on those is probably high as you can get the optiplex's cheaper than the XPS's most of the time.
Thats not a good design. The fact you said they have run hot for past 4 gens, isn't that a cause for concern for servers in a rack that may be using these and doing encoding? There's a reason so many company's now are going AMD for enterprise.
Cost saving in watt usage, and heat. Heat also means noise. More cores, using less wattage, running cooler means a better environment.


Intel was able to make up some ground great, but it seems at the cost of efficiency. ANd as GPU's get bigger, the last thing you want is wattage on cpu's going up to insane levels.
Which is why architecture wise AMD is leaning heavily into APU's.

The 5800G to me is a marvel, and if thats the future, obviously to get to something performance wise of a 6800xt is a ways off in apu standards. The fact V-CACHE is being the focus shows AMD knows that at some point can't keep making everything bigger in clocks and in core counts, and giant gpu dye's.

But we kind of knew this would be the case. Just appreciate it for what it is, I guess.

It's not a bad showing, IMO. Not great, but decent.

Well, we might not see Zen 4 until late 2022.

But you're going to see the V-Cache 5000 series in late Jan/February.
Yes, I was talking more from a productivity point of view, where the extra cache wouldn't be so helpful. The 12600k could still be decently positioned in that regard.

2700X, 1080ti here....

I think I will do a full new DDr5 build when RTX4080 drops (if I can get one) , no rush as my 1080ti still does what I need.

seems like the leaked benchmarks were correct. big performance jumps, but even bigger power consumption jumps. This also explains their big little approach as they seem to have been unable to get the P cores anywhere near something that you could call "power efficient".
Intel put out another heater. Finally superior/equal in performance, but at what cost....

It's good performance but doesn't destroy the AMD stuff and it's super hot and much like when the next Ryzen stuff launches, it's going to be expensive.

So I welcome back Intel to the gaming performance crown for the most part but for productivity as well as those hot temps, it's not something is jump over a cheaper alternative.

Now the mid range is something I'd say that Intel did very well with.

It's still always exciting to see a new gen of stuff come out so tis the season.

Serious question, if you're trying to build a new system, why wouldn't you go with Alder Lake if AMD keeps current prices?

I'll take a wait and see approach but I could easily see myself upgrading my X570/3900X to an Alder Lake if the performance justify it AND the systems are stable.

Because i would wait for Zen3d and compared them, but if it burns take, then the choice is Alder Lake. Ofcourse if you have money for ddr5 etc

P.S just saw multitask rendering premiere + kompas, alder laker 2 times worse than 5900x

You actually require a top of the line cooler with Alder lake if your doing any Productivity work. And require a bigger compensation for Powersupply since it pulls 240w at full P1 state.

Price wise they are close, but where the price increase is really on intel is cooling your setup with a costly AIO shown in Gamers Nexus video which is on the expensive side. For a really good AIO your looking at $120-150. Even on Air which is probably not recommended your looking at $100+ for a high end Noctua which also takes up shit loads of room in your case. As apposed to AMD where you can have a modest 240m cooler, or a cooler master 212h which is 30$.
 
That's a Nah from me dawg, that power draw is insane, but I am currently sporting a 5950X so maybe I am a little biased? I'd say wait for a revision of Adler Lake.

Zen4 on 5nm should put Adler Lake to bed, it's already sleepy as is.
 
AMD is in a bad position.
"They need to lower prices", but they don't control how much they have to pay to fab the chips. This is the advantage that Intel has that can kill AMD, they can be much more aggressive with prices to undercut AMD and break their momentum.

As expected Alder is faster on games, AMD can recover with Ryzen is 3DNow!™ but this will make the chips more expensive, so how can AMD compete (on games)?

I'm surprised that Alder didn't beat AMD on productivity but it's close enough and people are saying that Zen 4 will only be a small improvement.


It's the "back to a competitive scenario" that people where hoping, but personally I dislike this.

This is a good response. I failed to notice that Z690 motherboard costs are starting at $300 and many are as high as $399. Alder Lake is a pretty significant investment right now. While Alder Lake is indisputably faster than Ryzen 4000, the cost benefit still keeps AMD in the ball park of competitive. B550 motherboards can be had for well under $200 and if AMD drops prices on their CPUs then AMD becomes very attractive.
